I was considering Georgia Tech. Is it a good idea for a computer science masters or is Georgia Tech not prestigious enough? Genuine question.

Georgia Tech master's degree graduate here. GT is one of the great bargains in higher education. I was enjoying myself so much there I turned a 2 year degree into 3 years and went to school for basically free.

How much is "basically free"?

@@markp2381 This was late 90's. I think I paid for 1 year and it was around $8500 per semester for out of state tuition. The next 2 years were free as a graduate assistant where all I had to do was hang out in a lab for 20 hours a week and get paid around $15/hour if I remember correctly.

Excellent interview! I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mr. Isbell and great admiration for his contributions -- especially for being an architect of the Georgia Tech Online Master of Science in Computer Science, a program which I think makes a big impact in expanding Computer Science access to many.

BEE '87, Dad was AE '56, lifer at Lockheed in Marietta... Yes, $750 a quarter was a bargain... At the time, GT had a longstanding policy of making it easy to be admitted but very difficult to stay... Was not the smartest, but I worked hard and was focused - I and many of my friends don't think we could get in nowadays...

I'm not sure why he didn't know about WILD, the radio station, maybe because it was on AM radio but still had a strong presence in the early 90's. As an avid radio listener in the 80's and early 90's, hip-hop was supported by the college stations WZBC Lecco's Lemma being my favorite and Emerson had several weekly shows that played new music not played on KissFM and the like... I think the Quiet Storm was on Emerson. 22 year after moving away from Boston, I don't miss it at all.

A great Yellow Jacket alumni no doubt...but this is a bit of a misrepresented info here. Ga Tech demographic info for 1990 (year he graduated) 11,153 total undergrad, 1550 minority = ~14% Digging further specifically to computer science (his undergrad) 427 total, 68 minority...~16% So at best this was a bit of hyperbole, at worst intentionslly misleading nonsense. There is no way, by math that he was the only person of color or rarely saw any on campus and in his department.
