There is the perfect number of does that you can have on your land, to attract and maximize the number of bucks on your land. Too many does equals too few bucks. Bad herds, hunting and habitat can happen if you allow excessive numbers of does to fill the habitat on your land. Once you pass the number of does that should be on your land, the number of bucks that you can attract to your land begins to dwindle. Beware of the signs that will lead you to not only fewer bucks on your land during the daylight, but even fewer bucks on your land during the night. If you want to have great sex ratios, build a quality herd, create a quality hunt and attract the most bucks in the neighborhood onto your small parcel during the daylight (during the hunting season), then make sure to follow along...

I like your ideas about buck populations in relation to the doe ratio. I'm a small farm backed up to 1007 acres and one side 370 acre farm. When people hunt the other farms we have noticed for the past 20 plus years they line up along our fence and wait for the action. I have no crops or food plots for the deer to feed on but I do have lots of acorns and areas of thick brush. It's mostly hard wood forest and central location pond. When talking to these people that hunt other farms. All of them ask me what we do to attract these bucks to our farm. We have little to no hunting pressure and we stay out of the heavy brush areas, feeding, and bedding as well. During the full rut we see really nice deer coming off the other farms in high volume which the other hunters have noticed as well. This is the trick part of our place. We have very few doe and the ratio of doe to bucks is opposite of most areas. We have not taken a doe off our property in 3 years and have never had what I consider a doe herd. That's the part that puzzles us most and would like your input on this situation! Thanks for the great video and anything you have to offer!

I have two small parcels of land and I’ve lived here for 43 years. We never seen or had turkey or deer on this property til three years ago! It’s really rough terrain here in Harlan Ky. It’s butted up next to the Blanton state forest which can’t be hunted! I planted some small food parcels and there’s tons of natural food/ browse. Tons of white oak and red oak on and around my property. I haven’t put any hunting pressure on them and all I hunt with is my bow! I haven’t put in a water hole yet. Still I see very low numbers and very few bucks on my property and the other public properties I hunt here in Harlan Ky. I don’t have a ton of money for equipment but I bought a new PSE Uprising last year, other than that I’m to broke to get scents and multiple stands and cameras. I put in the work and time all year and still have no luck. I feel like if I had the right camo clothing and the right scents a couple cameras I would have a buck this season. I know this is lengthy but I really need some free advice for deer hunting in Harlan Ky rough mountains with no money to spend on products!

Make sense, I had just about 10 does on my 26 acres last year and during October into December, I got a total of 32 different bucks, ranging from 2 year old spikes to one mature 10 point. My only habit improvement was opening up a space for a food plot. We'll see how that turns out.

According to what you are stating is if I have a low number of does and fawns on my property that's a good thing...well then I'm in good shape....I have a few does and fawns on my 22 acre parcel in Adams county WI. I have yet to see any bucks yet this year other than a button buck. I do get regular trail cam pics day and night movement of does and fawns on my property though. I am hoping that the bucks will soon be traveling through my property soon. My property is 22 acres of 170 acres of closed MFL so there is no public hunting and 3 other 22 acres of 170 were recently purchased. Some of the property is pine plantation but on the west side of my property has a lot of hazelnut brush, Red Oaks, White Oaks and an occasional Maple and White Pine. I have couple of natural clear areas where I put in some micro food plots and the deer and turkey seem to like them. I am thinking because of their locations and the security of the hazelnut brush surrounding them. I have a lot of improvements that Id like to do and would like to atleast put in one water hole maybe 2..what do you recommend for how many water holes per parcel and should I put them at the edge of one of the micro food plots or elsewhere?

It's a bigger parcel, around 1,000 acres. I really don't have enough cameras to cover every area of the property I'd like to look into. Would you recommend harvesting a lot of does in the early season this year to lighten the pressure and hopefully make it more inviting to older bucks by mid to late season or next season even? Great information . I am a small 40 acre owner and am keying in on what you are laying down. I have watched nearly every video you have made. I have seen the same mistakes made that you talk about on friends properties. My goal is to be the daytime buck spot and herd influencer and your videos help. I have one gripe. Every video has the same buck at the water hole, buck at the side hill scrape and same buck bowshot. I know you must have different footage you can use. It has been to the point that sometimes I stop and wonder if I already saw the video. Keep up the good work, you obviously know what you are doing I’ve seen your walls, wondering what your thoughts are on having mineral licks near scrapes.

Deer tips: 1. Install a Screech Owl nest box. They will reduce tick hosts like white-footed forest mice. 2. Every five years do a Proscribed controlled burn in April or May. This will release phosphorus and other minerals into the soil and promote vegetation growth. It will kill ticks and pit-vipers. 3. Plant White Swamp Oaks, Chestnuts and Persimmon trees.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Create a paradise and the Champions will chase the lessers away. Pick your targets. Do you see a healthy well muscled animal with a great rack in your sight? Don't shoot. Look for an animal to cull. Just like Cattle, Sheep, pigs or poultry; eat the culls and breed the Alphas. I read the Bible a couple times in seventh, Eighth, ninth and tenth grade. I recall for Sheep it mentions pick out your Best 10% of your Rams for breeding. Regarding the new ewe flock, sort them out and eat the 10% which look the thinnest and poorly formed. When you are done sucking on their bones go through the 90% of remaining ewes and select another 10% for eating. The Bible instructions for building a flock is breed the top ten percent of Rams and 81% of the nicest looking ewes. This is not as easy to do from 70 yards away, so invest in some optics and develop judgement on good Whitetail conformity. If you always shoot the Best looking Bucks you are never going to develop a good herd of deer. You breed the Champions; allow them to run another year.

Thanks again Jeff. I have 23 acres surrounded by 500 acres medium hunting pressure. I see 3% buck activity on my property until October then it increases due to the rut. Concerns of taking to many doe exist of course. My property is like a bowl Streams in the bottom. Not sure if this is idea anyhow for bucks all year? There are many areas which bucks can hold up on upper surrounding properties which have standing crops throughout the year? 6-10 doe can bed in my bottoms certain times, not sure doe reduction would help me much? During the rut 30 plus differ passing thru bucks,, 2 or 3 local bucks frequent late season outside of rut. You are the most knowledgeable out their for sure. Hoping I can pickup 200 acres soon, may bring you out to maryland. Any ideas would be great

I have two farms that connect. One is a cattle farm with no food plots. It's harder for deer to "escape" each other on this farm. The other is a farm managed for deer and wildlife with warm season grasses, fall food plots, and mixed hardwoods. The numbers of deer are probably the same on each property, but the bucks seem to hang out on the cattle farm until the rut when they switch to the other farm with more does and younger bucks. I can't figure out why they wouldn't be on the farm with food plots and where the deer are less heavily concentrated.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 5 жыл бұрын
Makes a lot of sense! Food plots equal stress to deer and displace mature buck bedding. Does gravitate to adjacent food plot bedding and what is left over, bucks bed in. Depending on how much hunting pressure is placed on the land, mature bucks will retreat even further away. Mature bucks have to have seclusion from does, young bucks and hunting pressure. Often food plots equal all 3 and if they are located in the center of your acres...even worse. Habitat improvements also equal higher levels of does, young bucks AND hunting pressure. If the food plots are summer plots too...even worse because they attract doe bedding all Summer, and then those does stay and take up space during the hunting season...along with young bucks. I hope that all makes sense...but to me that cow pasture land seems like the perfect place for mature bucks to slide over to for the majority of the hunting season.

We’ve got quite a few Does on our 323 acres that we lease, but the problem we’ve had for the past two hunting seasons is almost all of the Does had small Fawns that were still nursing all the way through the season. We usually take a couple of Does a year but we haven’t the last two seasons because of the Fawns still nursing and we were afraid that they wouldn’t make it without their Mom? Our rut is so late that they extended the season through February 10th two years ago. I was checking my cameras last week and the Does haven’t started Fawning yet and they look like they are due anytime now? We had our best season this year and we got 3 nice mature Bucks but I don’t want the Doe numbers to get to high and the Bucks start leaving our property?

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

Great question Nick! The most important and first step is that I do not plant Summer plots. They reside on the fringes, a few on the land and a lot on the neighbors that way. They come on the land mid season a bit more and hold for a while, but often my neighbors are seeing a lot more does during daylight than bucks...so they help out a lot, on all sides. We then have taken between zero and up to 12 throughout the years, typically in 1-3 daysnof total doe hunting, early and late in the season. A buddy and I have taken 9 in one day...easy to do in December when they aren't used to being shot at. Some years we haven't taken any based on the amount of deer. The worst day to shoot does is on opening day of gun season. Horrible day unless a buck is already on the ground. I had a client shoot 5 does on 80 acres on WIs opening day of gun season and then wonder where the deer went, lol. You can accomplish a whole lot in 1 or 2 days or doe harvest, especially when you maintain the food sources movements and basically set up the deer herd by letting them think you aren't hunting... Again tho, it all begins with zero food during the Summer...

Hi Josh, depends on the herd...reducing Summer food or eliminating summer food is always the first step. If I remember correctly, in a previous video, you said (something along the lines of), “unless you have 1,000+ acres to manage and hunt, don’t plant summer food plots because you’re creating a doe vacuum.” With this being said, would it be better to plant fall/winter food sources, to help avoid creating a doe vacuum? I get what you're saying but what to do about it? Should we be focusing on quality small bedding areas with fall plantings only so the property is pretty quiet in the off season? For instance, i have a property I work on that has plenty of farmland within a mile and a half does can feed on. I have at one end, a great regenerated thick area that attracts bucks with a series of small clover plots leading to a destination plot of 5 acres. I could skip spring planting of the destination plot until mid-summer and put in my fall cover crop mix instead of planting a spring mix and a fall mix. I have one property that has great cover, shade and some clover that should produce bucks but they just don't hang out there. I have no clue as to why other than it lies between 2 roads and is on a lower slope position. The bucks hang out on the neighbor's sanctuary zones with lots of does. I should send you a map of that one and go over it with you sometime.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen! Definitely the first step in reducing doe numbers is to get rid of summer food...and that included those clover plots. The goal is to let the does establish Summer fawning somewhere else. Man I wish I could look at a map with you! I have a 70-80 hour career/7 days per week. Almost 900 clients eats up my time too...well the 200 vids this year, 2-3 books and 90 clients in 2019...hunting, family. Time is so precious. When I get any extra it is the opposite of whitetails if you can imagine 🙂 I hope that makes sense tho! Food is the first step...better layers of cover and last is trigger control. A landowners shouldn't have to shoot a huge number of does on a small parcel if they eliminate Summer food, work on cover, etc. Another aspect is hunting pressure, which is always the lowest hole in the bucket.

I’m wanting to take a hog with my AR. I’ve loaded my own rounds for each of my rifles and pistols. It make me feel great to take something with something I made myself. Put all the time in to research the load that’s perfect for the situation. Just like you on these deer parcels. I understand how you do the research to do what you do. I’ve got people wanting me to load rounds for them but there’s to much liability in it. A factory round can go bad. Anything can happen I just do not load for anybody only my family and a few friends. You know what I’m saying on liability part of that. Great video I learn something from each video brother thank you. Nothing like getting that bow anchored and settling that pin behind the shoulder now. GOD BLESS be safe.

Whitetail Habitat Solutions the first shot was far I understand why I missed it but the second one I don’t understand that one now. I’m taking my old hog thumper savage 30-06. It wasn’t my AR’s fault I’ve not shot it enough to be used to it really and it costed me bout a 165-175lb boar to. My fault nothing but my fault. GOD BLESS. It’s not over by a long shot. I’m waiting till late this eve it feels like 91 degrees here. Smothering hot big time. Next time I take my AR I’ll be ready. No excuse just my fault. GOD BLESS.

The ones I hunt and lease/own have 8 acres of cover (40 acres), 30 acres of cover (52 acres) and 23 acres with 25 in cover. It really depends on the situation, region, neighbors, etc...but typically 10-20+

Does that number change when hunting in ag country? Say if your one of the only ones around with a wooded property and fields surrounding for 3/4 to a mile then maybe patches of other hard woods. Would summertime bucks most likely stick around since it’s not 98% wooded like northern MI?
@yogibear6271

MI Outdoor Family Traditions I would say not the mature bucks. that's my guess I believe it depends on alot of things including the individual buck but I would say he's going to leave. Jeff can answer that better than me though.

When bucks are in small latched of cover...they do sometimes stay. Those areas are limited tho...northern IN, IL, OH, southern MI and portions of Iowa to name a few. It really boils down to habitat. Bucks need high stem count cover and Fall food...if that changes and you add in a dose of hunting pressure, they typically leave.
