Here in this video I am going to test, diagnose and repair ATX power supply for one desktop PC. The PC went dead after power supply failure. Here we will learn how to test and limit the power supply fault to a particular circuit.
replacement power supply can be found anywhere in the market. switching power supply is the main part of today's modern electronic equipment. power supply manufacturers are everywhere in China. 12 volt computer power supply is very common ATX type supply used in computers, laptops, photocopiers, printers, atox and everywhere. unregulated power supply is another common type of power supply used in most equipment. 24vdc power supply is sometimes used to charge a lead acid battery. pc 12v power supply can be modified as lab power supply. 12v dc atx power supply is common type supply for desktop PC. pulse power supply is another name give to a switching power supply. ac dc power supply is very common for lab use. linear regulated power supply are used as variable voltage output supplies. programmable power supply is another kind of variable voltage power supply. cosel power supply is sometimes used in electronics. best power supplier are most manufacturers. industrial power supply is another kind of power supply used. 12v dc computer power supply can be used as apx power supply. where can i buy a power supply is common question asked. medical power supply is the most costly type of power supply used in medical equipment. switching power supply is another name of ATX power supply. dc power supply is also a kind of switching regulator. ups power supply is termed as uninterruptible power supply. 12v power supply has many many uses.

This is the first power supply video I've seen that wasn't just a capacitor or fuse and one of the few videos that actually takes the time to troubleshoot the device. It is very good when people making videos put in quality effort & educate people who are interested in electronics

Wow, can't believe this guy is giving advice on repairing electrical components. Anyone else spot the two bare wires going into the wall socket behind him? (set video to 1080 on full screen and have a good look) This made my day, I really needed a laugh...thanks.

+jakese7en1 You can only laugh and will only laugh. Any thing else is beyond your abilities! Instead of pointing a very small thing look at the subject which is being discussed. I was testing it in an expert way. A lay man was not attempting the repair that you are pointing two wires. A practical man is never ever giving attention to such "Calligraphy". If the video didn't work for you, no worries as the same time it worked for thousands. So instead of doing a negative comment just pass the video and go ahead. Also giving a look to your channel shows there is no single video upload. I am challenging you to upload something of your own better than me.

+LearningZone Actually I am a PC technician, I've fixed thousands of PC problems. Saying that I've never fixed a PSU, so my hat is off to you for that. BUT!!! two bare wires into a wall socket is not a small thing, it's outright dangerous.

+jakese7en1 You are right dear friend but as I already explained, here I was the only working on such unit. So I understood the risk. If there were children or ladies around, sure I had to protect it very well. Another thing is PC repairing is not only my job. this is a hobby. And when I am shooting a video, there is much more to do than to give attention to wire insulation etc. There is my other video coming on where I am doing even more dangerous testing. So you will become even angry on that.

A switching power supply does require a load to work properly, but you seem have knowledge of this power supply to repair it, Very well!!

Most of these can be repaired without even powering on the scope. Its normaly shorted switching transisitors causing a dead bridge, bad caps, blown PWM and diodes. Good video.

Dooglesman Yes dear friend you are right. A shorted power supply could be tested and repaired using a regular multimeter but reason for using scope here was to show the short circuit behavior. The acquired knowledge will help somewhere else in future repair work. Regards,

Good job man. You speak very fast but its useful for my English learning. I'm technical electronic too.. Those power supply are cheap and worst for med and high levels PC. I choose for certified power supplies only.

Good lord, the entire input filter stage and input protection is missing from the board in that PSU, they didn't even bother populating it (just a single glass fuse is used). There's no output protection and no PFC which means nasty output transients are possible. And those dinky FETs, output diodes, and heat sinks... 500 watts my ass. I would be amazed if it were stable at 250. I'm surprised only the output caps and inductor died. That thing is a time bomb

I agree with Dacke and would like to add: the 330µF input capacitances are pretty much undersized. This PSU is crap, I wouldn't trust it either... Nice video, anyway :)

Hi I have a Dell smps that has partial functionality but I dont think it is providing full power. My question is should I be able to short out the 12volt power rail to my multimeter and get the amp rating on the spec sheet. What is happening is when I attempt to do this the supply shuts down. I can do this with 5v and 3.3v but the amp rating is much less than spec and the atx psu keeps working.

You should mention and know that most of the ATX power supplies need some decent load to really start up and keep their specs. If you start it with no load it will shut down immediatly and even can be damaged in some cases. The earlier versions 1.0 just need a little load in the 5V rail but the newer ones need more minimum load on nearly all rails separatly. They probably will come up for short time but run instable and can be damaged.

I don't know what people want to watch and what is their expectations? What I did in this video was an extreme repair where I wound the torrid myself and had shown how to diagnose a shorted component which is mostly a pain in the neck. Regards,

I have this true rated PSU that turns on but the thing is doesn't boot that computer, it just turns on the motherboard, CPU fan spinning, GPU fan spinning, keyboard and mouse light not turning on, no beep. I tried other PSU on the same PC and it turns on so PSU is the issue. all connection on every single wire are within the standard, 12v, 5v, 3.3v etc no issue in each connection, PSU fan spins normal. I usually get shocked when holding the CPU when installed in the computer. What may cause this issue and what component to check first?

Hey guys. My pc had shut down a few days ago and I narrowed down the problem today. Everytime I plug in the 4-pin power socket on the motherboard for the cpu, the pc does not boot at all (no fans running etc). When I unplug the cpu 4-pin on the motherboard, everything is fine. The fans run at their at their normal speed (led and gpu). Obviously, there is no post since the cpu is unplugged. Did my cpu 4-pin power socket short circuit?

how to wind that torroid choke coil.. what are the turns specifications and winding directions.

+ubedlohani I guess he counted the number of turns and noted the winding directions while unwinding the damaged coil. Since there is only one coil he must've wind it by hand. This was the way that I used to do so many years ago.

Nice work. I know that people can/will find things in this video they will try you to change (like the wires inserted without a plug in the wall and powerstrip) :) but don't worry. I also like the lady voice playing (i think) with the baby in the background. Just like when i try to make a video at home, my baby decides to cry and scream :) My only suggestion to the video would be to give more advise to the people watching, to not try to do this without proper knowledge of the dangerous voltages in the mains and entrance big capacitors.

***** Yes you are very much right. Some people are just trying to catch a small mistake and trying to make it an issue. There is one example that flies are sitting only on dirty wound and they just ignore nice and healthy parts of body! Same applies here. Terrorists are everywhere and are trying to lay down others. Biggest transformer is for main rails middle size one is for stand by voltage for 5vsb and pwm controler :D and smallest one is gate drive transformer. :D

TO ALL: There are LETHAL voltages in all computer power supplies and it is MUCH easier than you may think to contact these voltages. The heat sinks in particular can be at floating voltages exceeding 150v! Some capacitors in it are High Voltage and can hold a deadly charge for some time. A "tinker" should think twice about working on these. I have been in the electronics field for MANY MANY years. I have a complete E-lab where I do repair and Fab. (I) got whacked by the heat sinks whilst working on a live supply! If it happened to ME, I ASSURE you, it CAN happen to YOU. A: Use a Isolation transformer. No if's, and's, or but's. You can DESTROY your O-scope if you do not. B: NO bare hand touching with a supply that is plugged in. NO. NONE. C: Wear insulated gloves. Use a ATX breakout box such as: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NBU2C64/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and a ATX TEE connector like this: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BH2XM62/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Do you see how close that alligator clip is to the case? These supplies can EASILY deliver 30+ Amps on several of pins. This equals RAPIDLY melting wires if you do not know what you are doing. Also, In the vid, notice those heat sinks? They are probably over 150v relative to ground, OR each other! Please, be very careful. This is NOT a beginner project.

I changed the termister and the rectifier bridge that was bad and when i pluged one of the transistor and a resistance blew up do you think all the problems was from the transistor?

There could be a short circuit in primary or secondary circuit. Test for shorted components. Regards,

Maybe you will get some understanding from that repair as it is a repair on the primary side of the power supply and also latter in the end of the video I show how to use series lamp testing after your repair. After I replaced burnt capacitor 5 v standby disappeared , am guessing was not careful enough and destroyed a surface mount component , was a compact PSU with pfc , components packed in like sardines. Since posting this comment I have found a transistor near the standby transformer that has no conductively what so ever so am hoping a replacement will at least bring back standby ,,

On pin 13 on the 24 pin atx connector, is the ORANGE +3.3 V wire and the BROWN +3.3 V sense wire basically the same wire? Can i use a BROWN +3.3 V sense wire on pin 13 instead of a ORANGE +3.3 V wire? I'm making a adapter and i only have a BROWN +3.3 V sense wire for pin 13, so will it work just the same as a regular ORANGE +3.3 V wire?

Late, but ..... the brown is IMHO like a remote sensing compensating on cable loss and should reach the connector in your adapter. If not possible, just tied orange and brown, then continue with brown.

Someone has warned me to NOT open the CPU to blow away the dust. Let it rest for a couple of hours. As there can be electricity in there? Is it dangerous? How would you go about it? I've seen people hit the power button when it's turned off to discharge.

Hi, if the capacitors measure 20-30% more of the printed value, they are still ok or it's better to replace them? no bulge etc. on them.

YOU FORGOT TO WARN PEOPLE THAT THERE ARE POTENTIALLY DEADLY CHARGES IN THE CAPACITORS. Please add this as an annotation to the beginning of the video and in the description. Someone might think it's OK to just pop the PSU open and start fiddling around like it's a harmless toy.

To rewind the choke, you just have too get the same number of passes around with a bare copper wire?

Enameled (Magnet) wire is required.

Yes same number of turns, with same orientation. But the wire must be anamelled insulated and not bear copper wire.

Search Internet for "sata power splitter". And if you have access to old PC parts and soldering iron, you can make your own in 15 minutes.

this psu has 15A on the 12v rail, meaning it can barely reach 250w continuously properly. Even at peak wattage for a few seconds, i can't imagine it will reach 500w. Just to give a comparison, my 400w gold rated psu has 32A on the 12v rail. So, this is a very good video, showing you have superb skills, but i would advice to get another psu because it is of very bad quality and will damage the whole system.

Very nice video. I have a problem with a PSU (thermaltake tr2 600w) after low voltage on input AC 220 (160 or less) my power supply Die, but my motherboard show green light when connected. PSU won't turn on even manually with green+black wire together. Do you know what can it be? What can I test? No sign of burnt or smell. Thxs in advance!

Yes sure. But consider current rating. The circuit current shouldn't exceed the negative cable current carrying capacity.

I have a power supply. lc power 550w. It wants to power on but the protection circuit powers it off. Ive checked the inside carefully and I cannot see anything wrong. I dont know whats wrong... plz help

Sure there will be some short. Check again the secondary and primary circuits for any possible short. sometimes capacitors have dynamic short which is not coming in troubleshooting using ordinary methods.

I have one just like this in the video.. And me accidentally did not switch from 110 to the 230 volts side. When I plugged it into the outlet here which is 230 volts And now it won't work and I am confused on how to fix it. Not to knowledge of where to start. Not many repair shops here where I am here. Note this not going in a Pc. But a duplicator unit

Great to watch video. How did you find it? Useful? You must check components on primary side. Replace defective power transistors, IC, rectifier diodes and big smoothing capacitors. Hope will lesson from you after repair. Stay tuned and sub.

wow that has to be the worst power supply i have ever seen good job fixing it though, i wouldn't use that power supply looks barely good enough for 50 watts

+LearningZone I enjoyed the video. It was very informative without getting bogged down with unrelated information. Also, I've found the more powerful and "premium" a power supply, the more compact the interior is (need to fit larger more powerful caps withing the same standard space) - so a low watt power is definitely best for showing and teaching a lesson as it's much more clear what everything is.

I have the same problem like the one in the vid. Replaced the burn choke filter and runs like a champ. BUT, it runs very hot, easily 70 degrees (cant touch it). It runs hot even under no load. Voltages are PERFECT. Wondering if the choke will burn again and way ... Could you help me ?. Thanks. Nice vid.

Seems you have bad capacitors after filter. Replace those electrolytic capacitors with new. Stay tuned and blessed.

@@JahanZeb1976 Many thanks SIR. Im reparing this ATX to make some money and sometimes I stuck so bad on some of them, can figure out what is going. One question sir, what is the expected freq. The PSU now is at 29Khz and dutyv cycle is 78% (Im using a multimeter with Hz and duty cycle measurement). I changed the set resistor to get 50Khz, now duty is 25% (seem more reasonable). But the toroid is still too hot. I will check caps today. Any other suggestion will be very welcomed. Many thanks and bless for you. EDIT: Added info. Chip is ATX2005, is very similar to SD o SG6105 (not sure if this is the correc number for it) TL494 + 339 combo chips. Its PWM + supervisor. Both inputs work. Input transistor not shorted. Diodes not shorted (at least measuring in the PCB). The choke is for 12V and 5V and -12V. The 3.3V is in a separete choke. It runs hot too, but not as hot as the one I told you. Interesting fact, not sure if you have used this ATX testers (the ones with a blue screen showing voltages and a couple of alamrs), the TESTER ALWAYS have a warning on Power ON delay being 0ms. Normally is 300ms, 350ms .... ummmm It turned off and back on (alone) a couple of times and in one oportunity it took like 3 seconds to start. Thanks again for you patience and time.

Ground cable is not necessary for powering PSU. You can get electrical shock or damage your oscilloscope through earth ground cable.

What about powersupply that had red option (115) volts and then were connedted to 230 v outlet! How do you find the dead resistor or transistor?

In such a situation it will make a catastrophic damage to the circuit board. You may test for all shorted components and replace them with good new ones. Regards,

must problem of power supply when the diode become shortage the mosfet will shortage too then the fuse will Open circuit must 1N5406 , 20N60S1 change it, all of them to become same and new device

Thanks man. cool video. My Pc's power supply burned recently. I found the input voltage was set to 120 and plugged to a 240 source. I opened the PSU and found one of the two big capacitors on the primary side(640uf 200V) with the adjacent resistor and blue two legged flat component( reads RV) is burned. Can this be fixed or ........ please comment Thanks again

Smashing recovery of a quite usable switchmode psu :-)) I think the label is telling lies, it does not look strong enough to cope with the power levels stated, larger heatsinks and a really good fan would have been my choice. But manufacturers love to cut corners :-( I have also repaired switchmodes, but most of them have been dead output capacitors and earlier stage capacitors that prevented correct operation. Another typical problem for old supplys is the standby sub smps, the pc is off but the 5v standby smps can be on for years without a break!!, it dies and there is no primary power to the control pwm chip. I have fed 5v through the the standby 5v line to test the rest of the supply, but later supplys use the standby smps to deliver a second voltage, so i cant do that. The input rectifiers and resivour capacitors can explode, it makes you jump but often its repairable (as long as the chopper transistors are alive). Sorry im rambling again lol.

You are absolutely right. 5V Standby power supply is always on to make the PC soft on and off through software way. I experienced trouble with those circuit as well. Some times it is really tedious and time consuming as well as expensive to restore such power supplies. It is recommended to restore them if you have some junk supplies to grab parts from and in other case if the power supply is something special and is not easy to obtain new. Regards,

LearningZone But like yourself im not appreciated, so any amazing repair is often forgotten by the owner, i dont mind as im used to the effect, im pleased with the repair and may have learnt something in the process :D I have learnt that "Somethings are not worth it, its not because im not good enough." took years to learn this simple lesson.

The other issue with the cheap PSUs not being able to put out enough power is too small of a transformer. The main transformer (the biggest one in the PSU is the main power transformer) gets overloaded, and it "saturates", causing the switching transistors to fail catastrophically. Also, another failure is where a poorly designed 5V standby regulator has a bad capacitor. Because of a poor circuit design, the capacitor failure causes the output voltage to increase, even up to 20 to 30V, frying the motherboard....!

Benjamin Esposti Ooow ive never seen a standby circuit do that before, but there is time lol. I would imagine the over saturation of the core would create a massive current overload for the driver transistors, booooom!! lol. Ive repaired them but never really looked too close at the technical side. I have a mates pc motherboard with a couple of the mosfets rather ill, well dead lol, for no apparent reason it went pop and the main switchmode was shorted out by the high current cpu psu on board. As there are 4 parallel sets of mosfets and driver chip i removed the dead mosfets, and the mobo works with all voltages correct, any ideas on why it went pop?, everything was stone cold, perhaps its just a crap asus mobo lol.

hi its great video i need you little help please must reply. i have codegen atx supply model 250xa1 similar in your video but little bit different in circuitry. suddenly its stop working. every thing is fine no faulty caps no burnt coil, but when i turn on it nothing happened. stay off. but i have 5vsb. what should be possible fault. its schematic diagram available on net u can see the schematic and help me. hope for your positive response sir.

Thorough testing is required. Maybe you would have defect in the main smps section. Look for burned components, pcb tracks, loose connections on the main smps primary. On the other hand secondary switching can go defective which is responsible to switch on the main smps primary section. Also check optocouplers in the circuit. Make intense testing to figure out the fault.

If the only standby 5V is available but the supply is not giving output on shorting those 5V to ground, Sure the is some problem in the power side. check for any possible short in the output and input stage.

Hi, I am using old dell pc smps as 12v 7ah power supply, initially works well. Now the issue is when I connect 12v 35w lamp the smps turns off until it's power on. But VSB 5V power only available and all other turn off. I tried same lamp connected turn on the main supply lamp is glowing and disconnected the lamp n connected again little spark coming and turn off smps expect 5v VSB. Pls help what needs rectify
