My place of employment wants us to use those to probe metal chassis cable boxes so we don’t get blasted, but they’re so unpredictable. They’re good at telling you that your customers dog is live at 120 volts though

The 'spring' effect of the rubber pad may be to improve the reliability of the connection between the tip and the wire. The rubber will compensate for bits moving around inside while maintaining the connection?

That conductive rubber is very constant. These type of items definitely won't be seeing the inside of my tool case.

I would say the rubber bit is meant for insulation from the direct mains voltage. The fluke meter is reading "contaminates" in the rubber, or "ghost voltages" on the meter, hence the fluctuating readings on your meter. It looks as though the device is using "Capacitive Coupling" as a means of detection. If that is the case. then its "relatively safe" (if it doesn't get wet), but never the less, a useless piece of kit.

At the rate fluke is going downhill, they might be onto something.

JW may I ask were was most of if not all the electrical appliances in your home made? CHINA THAT'S WERE and your happy to have them in your home and use them on a dayly basis but you nock simple little things like a Chinese made neon screwdriver? If they are as bad and dangerous as you wrongly clame they would not be allowed and I doubt they would even get through customs at Heathrow Airport

Well... me and my dad have been using electrical neon mains present testing screw drivers for quite a long time and have not had any ill effects from them - excellent for holding against a live terminal (glowing neon) to see which circuit/MCB needs to be turned off, also the driver tip is the right size for electrical screws on plates, terminals, spur boxes, plugs and lamp holders.

Duspol is much better than this thing.My grandfather has duspol from 1970s or earlier but it works well today.

The problem with those neon screwdrivers is that most people don't know what they are for and how to use them, Think about this your down your local club tomorrow lunchtime and you see the TV is no longer on the wall above the bar and you can see a red and a black wire sticking out of the wall where the single socket used to be the maneger ask you to sort it out, you don't know if it is live or not, you don't need to worry about the valtege as you know it is 230/240 valts you just want to know is live or not simple take your neon screwdriver out of your brest pocket and touch the end of the red wire neon eliminates now you know. Or your about to replace a ceiling rose you ask your son to turn of the bracket, as you start to undo the terminal screw on the rose the neon eliminates, your response to your son YOU FECKING IDEOT I TOLD YOU TO TURN OFF THE FECKING BRACKER .

i have one of these...its really bad...its not even good as a screwdriver..i know john dislikes neon phase pencils...but they are much better than this rubbish
