Your videos have been so helpful and easy to understand. My husband is now disabled and at the age of 72 I find myself having to decorate our home for the very first time. It was a daunting job, but I watch your video's then apply what I have learnt to the room. Nearly finished the main bedroom and while it has been tiring, I am very proud of what I have achieved for the very first time. Thank you

Hello Aubrey, I've just found your painting videos and it reminded me of when you and John taught me painting and decorating at Salisbury College for 3 years, 1998 to 2001. Great times and great instructors, learnt so much. I'm still self-employed all these years later. Although I'm commented as my partner Roxanne, my name is Mark Clifford. Great to see your still painting and you are a true master.

Loving your videos, so helpful. My radiators have never previously been painted but a few are starting to rust at the bottom and specks around so need to do something. They are the 21 type style so seem like they'd be a little trickier to paint then the radiator in this video. Do you have any advice on what I could try to clean them up before painting them please?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamie, I would rub them down using a 240 grade abrasive paper to provide a key for the paint. Give the rust spotted areas a good rub down to try and remove some of the corrosion and leave a flat surface. Treat the rust spotted areas with either the product shown in the video or Hamerite Kurust which can be purchased in Halfords at a good price. It may be best to use the solvent based radiator paint on your radiators due to their present condition. Apply one coat and then wrap your brush in a sandwich bag to keep it soft overnight before applying a second coat. You will need to wash the brush out first with white spirit followed by washing up liquid and water. Hope all goes well for you 😊

Glad you are finding the videos helpful. providing the surface was clean before applying the paint and the first coat looks nice and smooth you should not need to sand the first coat. If there are any bits or nibs then lightly abrade with a very fine abrasive (240) grade.

I had an issue painting my radiator. I used a radiator paint and I am not sure if I applied too much paint but now that it is dry you can see the shape of some drops dripping and going down the radiator surface. I am thinking of waiting 7 days (on the instructions it says that's how long it takes for the paint to be fully dry), sanding it to get rid of the drops and reapplying the paint. Is this a good option? Thanks!!!

Hi Aubrey. I’m new to painting in general. You mentioned that part of the reason rads get dirty is due to hanging clothes. If using a water based paint, once the rad has dried for a few days and you then hang wet clothes to dry on the rad, is there a risk that any paint can come off onto the wet clothes? Thanks
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Жыл бұрын
I have used the water based radiator paint in my own house and it does dry to a solid paint film. However, if you regularly hang wet clothes on the radiators then it may be best to consider the solvent based variety. Hope all goes well with the decorating 😊

If the radiators are badly faded then it is a good idea to paint them. If you want a colour other than white you can tint the water based radiator paint with artists acrylic colour paint. I used a little amount of green to tint the white paint in this video.

@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating

Hi Julian, yes you could do that, however, be aware that emulsion paint on radiators quickly becomes dirty with people touching and leaning on them. A satin finish in the same colour may be another option. Hope all goes well for you.

Afternoon Aubrey... Could you advise me in which order to paint a room.... Which has... Artex Ceiling, picturerail, walls, skirtingboard, door and a radiator... TIA...
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, after doing all the preparation work I would suggest the following: First paint the ceiling, you could also paint the top part of the wall down to the picture rail the same colour as the ceiling. Next paint the walls and clip the picture rail, door frame and top of the skirting board around 5mm with the paint. Next paint the woodwork starting with the picture rail, then door frame, then door and last of all the skirting board. You can paint the radiator any time after completing the walls. Caution, before painting the picture rail make sure you thoroughly dust off with a dusting brush as their is a groove which holds the dust along the top and this can be transferred onto the picture rail when painting. Let me know if you need any more advice 😊

Thank you for this great tutorial video. I noticed that you used Wilko own brand radiator paint in this video. Silly question, in your professional opinion, how is it compared to other premium brands? I have some minor rust on our radiator. I want to get a good quality hard wearing radiator paint. A lot of premium radiator products often claim no primer coat required as well as no need to scrap off rust as their selling points. Too good to be true😅
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have used the Wilko water based radiator paint many times and even in my own house. It does give a nice finish. If you need it to be hard wearing you may be better off using the solvent based product. I would use a rust treatment as shown in the video before painting. Hope all goes well for you 😊
@preasail

Thanks for your helpful video. I have two questions, though: 1. Isn't it better to use an oil-based paint on a radiator because it's susceptible to rust? 2. After you've applied the rust neutraliser, regarding durablilty, is an oil-base paint better to use over it? Or is one kind as good to use as the other?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 2 жыл бұрын
The water based radiator paint is fine to use in a domestic environment which is not in a high traffic area and as long as towels or clothes are not going to be continually hung over it. I have also found that once the rust has been treated with the suggested product both types perform well when applied over it.

@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Thank you. Just to follow up, the local hardware shop was out of any type of rust neutraliser, so I went ahead, sanded off the rust on the radiator, and applied the water-based Rustin's brand without painting on the rust preventer first. That was a mistake because within a few hours rust bled through. So to back up your advice, it's imperative to prep the surface first with that product before painting, especially if the water-based paint is used.
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the rust treatment does make all the difference. You will just need to lightly rub down those areas again and apply the rust treatment followed by 2 or more coats of the radiator paint. Hopefully you will only need to re-paint the sections where the rust is. Thank you for getting back to me.

Hi, if you use a good quality synthetic brush and use the water based satin I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I, like you was concerned about the finish the first time I used these paint but was very surprised at the finished result. The radiator does look and feel like a new one. Try first on one of your smaller radiators and paint it as shown in the video and all should be ok. Let me know how it goes Sufian 😊

Thanks Aubrey, I did that to keep it nice and then later got some white spirit. My radiator is looking good!

Oh Aubs! Radiators are the bane of my life! The church style versions are the worst. Granted they do look good when they’re done but I always try and talk customers into getting radiator covers and tell them that once you start painting them you’ve got to KEEP painting them! Naughty I know but what a pain. Great job as usual my friend. 😘

Yes I know what you mean Kathy. The first job my lecturer got me doing at College was to paint one of those big column radiators. It was dark green and he wanted it white. I had to use a small fitch to do most of it and it kept me busy for ages. 😒

Tip Aubrey! Setup amazon affiliate and get paid by linking of all of the products you use on your videos in the description. For example i'd like to know what round brush that was you used in this vid!

working on the basis that you use as wide a brush as the job allows, why are you using a 2 inch brush? as a DIYer i have used 3.5 - 4 inch brushes with no issues, coverage is quick and less chance of dry edges, your comments would be appreciated. Only just discovered your channel, finding it very informative and have already tweaked some of my methods. thank you.

These radiator paints are very thin and will easily run if too much paint is applied to a ridged surface like these radiators. Using a smaller brush will allow more control of the amount of paint being applied which I feel is important to people who are new to home decorating like many of my viewers are. If a larger brush works well for you then there is no reason to change your technique 😊
