On Friday 12th August 2022 the Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) trians that have been operating in Tāmaki Makaurau since 1993 ran for the last time. I decided to go and have one last ride before they disappeared into the night.
The ADL/ADC class DMUs were built in the early 1980s for Perth (Australia). They were refurbished in 2002. Since 2015 they've been running the Papakura-Pukekohe shuttle service. They are being retired ito allow line electrification between Papakura and Pukekohe to proceed full-time. The line will reopen in 2024 with Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains running.
It was also the last day that the Pukekohe Railway Station (as we know it) will exist. The current station will be demolished, with the 1913 station building being removed to allow for the construction of stabling yards. When the line reopens in 2024, it will have a new station at Pukekohe and 3 new stations between there and Papakura.
