You have the best teaching style I've seen on youtube. And...trying to learn Sony Vegas AND Audacity at the same time...I've watched a ton! Thanks!

This was the best and most concise video explaining the noise reduction that I've seen so far. You've helped me a lot! The others would try to give you a basic "yeah you put this as the profile and you're good to go" without even discussing the slider bars.

That's great Ross. I am really blessed in so many ways, not the least of which is people who leave messages like yours. May your day be wonderful.

Can't you type actual values (like "0" or "20") in the textboxes next to the sliders?
@cajun54549 жыл бұрын
Kevin Conder Yes you can. It is much easier than trying to control those slippery slider bars. I just forgot to do it in the video.

TL;DW: At around 7:50 he starts explaining what the slider thingies mean: these two values control much your audio will be filtered but in different ways noise reduction = how much the noise will be reduced by (higher values reduce more noise) sensitivty = how much audio will be affected by this (higher values reduce more noise at the risk of removing wanted noise) Frequency smoothing: if artifacts appear from the filtering, increase this to max (6)

Thank you very much for this tutorial. I now understand how noise reduction tool works better, and that's what I came here for. You can type the exact numbers just by clicking the numbers section with mouse, and the cursor appears - it's a massive help.

I had a strange constant chirping from a video stream I took the audio from and with some basic instructions elsewhere I tried this and got no reduction at all. I saw your video about the sliders and from your instructions I learned more about them and lost my hesitancy to try the different settings. (thank God for my saved untouched file to go back to in case and that preview button). I had to go way high on the noise reduction level to get it and had to go way low on the sensitivity otherwise it muffled the voices. It slightly modified the voices, but it worked great to make something that was near unlistenable to usable. I sure love audacity and the makers of it, but trying to find out how to do things with their written text help pages are hard for me to visualize if understand at all. Love the guys who make these kind of things, but boy they sure aren't much on explaining them to us layfolk. Thank you very much for your help here Phil.

Thanks, this helped me start figuring out how to remove background noise! The explanations about how each one works and when you might want to use which is very helpful. I've also found you can go and type in the values you want instead of using the slider.

Very clearly explained and extremely useful, thanks. I have a photography channel and it is surprising how much manipulation of sound mirrors manipulation of images. For example, _normalize_ is closely related to _levels_ in imaging. I'm an ex professional now enjoying passing on my experience on KZfaq. Sounds to me like you are doing the same.

Hi, Phil, you're fantastic at explaing the technical stuff! I've had some success by going to Effects>Change Tempo, and slowing the music from 45 to 33 1/3, getting the noise profile, applying the reduction as per your instructions, then back to Effects>Change Tempo, speed back up from 33 1/3 to 45. It takes some time, but it gives a longer noise profile, and separates the noise farther from the audio (in my case, Music), resulting in more reduction and less distortion of the audio.

Hi Scverous. Amplify quiet sounds, eh? If you mean that parts of the track or voics are softer than others, try the Leveller; it brings up softer parts and softens louder parts. Use the gentlest setting first to see what happens. Many other possibilities exist but try that one first.

Not usually. Most recent Laptops have mics built into them. when you set up Audacity and press Record, it should kick in automatically. If not, you can buy a cheap mc and plug it into the right place.

Try to quiten your recording space; turn off machines, move noisy computer fans as far away as possible (mine is in the closet), put blankets up to stop stray noises reaching your microphone; if possible, use a directional mic so it won't pick up noises you don't want, don't bump things, etc. etc. and you may have an echo effect turned on; also too much noise cleaning can make it sound like you are inside a big pipe.

Phil. You're brilliant, you are, and made me giggle. I'm struggling to get a very light hiss out of a piano track. I say light, but it's enough to annoy me. I've played around with everything you have suggested, but I just can't get the balance right without distorting the piano. Any tips? :)
@cajun545411 жыл бұрын
certainly. There is a hipass filter effect and presume it can be set for 24 dB. Not sure about the octave rolloff.

the microphone picks up all sound, and that includes your fan. I suggest finding the frequency of your fan (use the Plot Spectrum feature in audacity), then a notch filter to take out just that frequency band. I have videos about both of those I think. perhaps getting a mic with a chord so you can move away from the laptop? that would help a lot.

Kudos on the video. I needed another way of looking at noise removal besides what is in the Audacity Manual. I'm with you until you start explaining the frequency smoothing slider. In your example the noise is a 60Hz hum. So if you set the freq. smoothing value to 40, frequencies between 20 and 100 would be considered noise right? It sounds like you say "frequencies between 20 and 60" but then it sounds like you clarify your statement. Is the smoothing slider like a plus/minus value? In other words, a 60-cycle hum with a smoothing value of 40 opens the frequency range to 20-100. Do I have that right? I think I do. I would truly appreciate it if you were to let me know if I have it right or not. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Very helpful thank you, but I wish you would have played a sample of what you did so I could hear the difference. I have a background sound very similar to what you had here in, some home made cassette recordings from about 30 yrs. ago and I'm trying to get rid of this interference (if you will) and bring in just the vocal. Vocal jamming for fun.

Of course; it is probably used much more for music of all kinds than for vocal recording. There are a ton of videos explaining how to use it for any music and probably guitars. Have fun! Phil Chenevert

I had a speech recorded and it sounds like there is reverb on the recording. Either there was a small echo from the monitors and the main speakers of the room or the audio man left reverb on from the singers who performed prior to me speaking. How can I remove this? I had a great speech and it is ruined.

Thanks for the kudos. I believe you are correct that the freq smoothing slider does indeed work that way. I will do some research to pin this down exactly to see if there is a mathematical correspondence to the number in this bar.

Hi there Phil, I used your great tutorial to get rid of a nasty high pitch humm coming from who knows where. that worked partly fine, but I can still hear it moment that a sound is made. Do you have any idea if I can get rid of this too, or is it too mixed up with the rest of the audio track? Floorplanner Basics 1: Drawing walls

It was helpful but I've had to watch it 3 times over in an attempt to clarify the concepts you are presenting. In this video you are jumping around alot before you finish explaining a specific feature. It would also be helpful if you gave more working "preview" examples instead of just using words to attempt to illustrate the effects. Either way - thank you for your contribution :)
