Dieter is correct. The primary thing to remember when doing this job is to tighten the control arm to body bushings with the suspension under load.
@arionlefkopoulos

You have to tight the contol arm nuts while they are in resting position (on the ground) because of the rubber bushings.

You're correct, the final tightening the bolts should be done at curb weight. We didn't show it in this video but we do address it in others.

Suspension is supposed to be loaded before you tighten the lower control arms, if you do not do this is will cause pre mature wear on the bushings.

It's a good idea to get an alignment after any suspension work as the new parts won't settle in exactly the same spot as your worn ones. Hope that helps!

Hey thanks for the great tutorial. Will the directions work for a VW Passat? Seems the suspension design is the same/similar. Does hammering on the side of the ball joint housing pretty much always work? Since my car is a 1999 with 170 k miles I am worried that the ball joint neck will be stuck in the housing and require a puller. Read online that inner bolt requires lowering the subframe or cutting the bolt, you just wiggled the control arm to angle it out, does this work on the Passat?

@fcpeuro

It's literally the same procedure on a Passat, no need to lower the subframe. If hammering the joint doesn't work you can try a ball joint separator, I've put the link to one in the description. Hope that helps!

I'm a noob at this so this might be a silly question. Do you need a specific control are for which side you're replacing? Example, will I need to specifically find one a control arm for the rear passenger side or will they all be the same?
@fcpeuro

The lower forward arms are not side specific so you can use them on any side you wish. The rear lower arms are left and right though as well the four upper arms.

Tighten the contol arm nuts (inner side ones not where the ball joints are they are fine to tighten) while the car is on the ground or get the 4 wheels higher drive on to something but it has to be level and then tighten it down. Sway bar should be tightened when car resting on its wheels the split rubber has to face upwards and the one that is attached to the control arm has to be fully tightened only after you swing the car side to side yes you read that right. The whole idea of the bushing is not to be in stretched/stressed position when u tighten it hanging it is in different angle when u force it higher it is stressed all the time not only because of the road conditions it will cause a premature fail and a customer will have to fork out cash again

At 6:49 when you put the ball joint in. Did you have to take a sleeve out for it to fit or did the part just come small enough to fit into the sleeve? We can’t get my ball joint to slide up in bc it’s just a hair too big and I’ve had 3 different set of replacements sent. My mechanic says it’s bc I have the 4.2 and it has sport suspension so it’s different but I got the one for the 4.2 and everything else fit except for the ball joint on the forward lower control arm.

I'm replacing my front struts on my 99 A6. Anyway, the BentleyPubs shop manual notes that the bolt for attaching the strut to the lower control arm is a "one to use bolt". I paid note that you did replace all of the other bolts/nuts. Now I think, because the load on the bolt would be along the edge of the bolt and not on the thread/fastener you'd be OK with reusing this bolt. I did not see the green tint on that bolt, indicating it was self-locking so maybe the manual is incorrect??

James Heath Those can be a pain, I usually use a jack to lift the control arm and spindle as high as it will go in the suspension and lodge a socket in between the spindle and control arm while elevated. Then lowering the jack (allowing the spindle to apply pressure to the control arm) usually separates the two. Never fails me.
