One major downside to all modern day direct-injected cars is that carbon deposits build up and needs to be removed every 20k - 80k miles depending on conditions, engine type (e.g. the RS4 V8 engine is more prone to carbon deposits). Carbon buildup is due to the fact that no fuel is being injected over the intake valves like in a more common port-injected car, but instead injected directly into the combustion chamber.
In this video I will show you how I cleaned the carbon build up on my 2007 Audi A6 3.2 TFSI engine. This is the same procedure to carbon clean the V8 engines as well.
All the tools & parts are listed and linked below to complete this carbon cleaning service.

Another brilliant video. I think I will end pulling out the A6 engine like I saw in your other video and I will do this to the A4 because it´s giving me some emissions issues and could be due to this.
@Mechani_Cole
@Mechani_Cole 2 жыл бұрын
@kissumisha thank you! I agree if you are able to pull the engine to do the work, its best to pull it out and get everything done at once. No shortcuts at that point! I was ablr to get the engine out easily without removing the front end as well. Had to disconnect the hood strut to put the hood up higher but thats it. I've also seen people pull it out with the torque converter still attached too. They just slide it out and in. But risky for the seal.

@@Mechani_Cole looking forward, expectially for timing chain video, I can hear like half a second rattle when starting my engine after long break. When the oil gets to tensioners engine runs smooth. Is it something to worry about?
@Mechani_Cole
@Mechani_Cole 2 жыл бұрын
@@enjoychillinevenings yeah its super common. The upper timing chain guides go bad. The plastic pieces can break off and clog oil galleys too. I did mine when I did the cam girdle seal, which was a nightmare. 1 stripped bolt on the timing cover caused me to have to pull the entire engine🥴 My spark plug tubes had so much oil in them you couldn't see the spark plugs because the cam girdle seal failed. Also very common on these cars. The upper timing chain tensioner is do-able while the engine is in the car, but removing engine was actually helpful in the end. I would say the 3.2 is one of the more difficult engines I've pulled. It also has 4 timing chains and an insane rear timing chain cover with a rear main seal built in. It all started with a quick spark plug change😅

Yep I broke the PVC coolant lower nipple too ($150). I have a v8 but it looks very similar. I left the fuel rail in. The runners come apart so you probably could have left the rails in there. You may have saved yourself some money leaving those in mext time.

The carbon in my ports ended up being gummy as hell. One thing I learned it that having the extension helps with the blasting. It gives you more room to move the blaster around. The shop vac I got has a little 1" diameter pipe that only extends like 5 inches. It's attached to the bigger style shop vac hose that's connected to the shop vac. Ordered the extension for round 2

Hey great how to. I appreciate the effort to help us all be better at taking care of these cars. One maybe stupid question. Mine must have had a major oil leak up front. The entire front of engine is covered in caked on oil and dirt. I can't figure where you put that crank tool. Is it in the center of the crank or another spot? I've got oil all over and see no sign it would engage that open center part of the crank. Thanks-JH
@Mechani_Cole
@Mechani_Cole Жыл бұрын
Hey @John thanks, and hard to say where the oil leak is coming from. Best to start at the highest point possible and go down from there. For the crank tool, that's totally understandable. It looks funky for sure, but the square part of the tool actually sits in between all the bolts on the crank. Can reach down with your hand and set it inside to get a feel for it. You will feel it lock into place

Nicely done video...and I've watched several about this job! Planning to do this job on a V8 S5 soon. One thing I wonder about though which hasn't been addressed: Does it matter which direction one rotates the engine to close different valves? In other words, will I damage something if it is rotated in the opposite direction from how it normally runs?
@Mechani_Cole
@Mechani_Cole 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you and that's a great question. You must rotate the engine clockwise you can't rotate the engine in reverse it can throw the timing off possibly due to the tension in the chains. Best not to go in reverse of how the engine runs to be safe.

What were the results of the engine in terms of consumption and performance? I'm considering this carbon cleaning although it seems to be a PITA. I have the same engine running fine except some small spits/shocks/mini misfires you can feel at idle unloaded (putting it in drive/loaded makes the problem disappear).
@Mechani_Cole
@Mechani_Cole 2 күн бұрын
About the same, ran smoother after for sure. Couldn't give an exact on fuel efficiency after, but a noticeable difference. Along with spark plugs and make sure the pcv system is completely sealed. Often times, your issue is cause by a small vacuum leak from a cracked line. Best to replace it all when removing.

Good question! Yes, order 6 of the intake gaskets. But only 1 pack of the fuel injector gaskets, it comes as a full package for all 6. I believe the only way carbon buildup would cause it is if the carbon is making so the valves can't seal. You could have a vacuum leak as well.

@cuhhwetes Seafoam will NEVER work on Direct Injection engines to remove Carbon. Please don't listen to people who tell you that. Port Injection and Direct Injection are very different

@Mechani_Cole I didn't use seafoam on the gas tank. I used the Intake spray.

@cuhhwetes doesn't matter. Seafoam won't break down this thick carbon. Even if you soak the valves in them. Seafoam doesn't do anything to these valves

Somebody's engine bay is clean as hell. I'm scared of anything touching the wiring.

I keep it really clean, got OCD lol. Wiring isn't too bad, disconnect battery and not much can go wrong

@Its MechaniCole I'm going to get started today on it. All I figured was that everything was so brittle that I could possibly screw something up. Lol having a clean car with a dirty engine bay always made my car still feel dirty. Thanks for the video bro!!!!

Is it just easier to replace the injectors completely so you have to worry about the issue for even longer? I am looking to replace my 2011 Audi s5 couls sparks and wanna get the injectors too sense it just hit 90k might as well do all? Also is this process the same for a 2011 Audi s5? Thanks

If you got the money, then replace them all if you like. You can also remove them and have them cleaned and tested for much cheaper. Look up "injector cleaning and testing" near you. Some shops offer it for cheap. It's pretty much the exact same process. Your intake manifold will just be slightly different when removing.

Thank you for taking the time to respond man I appreciate your input! Think I will check that out and might even make it easier on my end to have them replace my coils and spark plugs while at it. Cheers you got a subscriber

@Aesthetics622 no problem. Spark plugs and coils for sure cha get out. Unless you are having an issue, I would just clean the injectors
