I was considering this new Audient ID14 MKii or Zen Go. Finally, I bite the bullet to buy the more expensive Zen Go. I am glad I did. The preamp is very good, and the real-time plug-in of synergy core indeed is a game changer. Everything is plug and play with good sound.

I can concur on soft, uninspiring output of the Mk1. It made me add too much frequencies in the sensitive range to get that "zing", resulting in harsh mixes and overemphasized transients. Glad that Mk2 is improved in that regard.

Nice job showcasing the features in a concise manner. At $299 it seems like a bargain for a first interface or an upgrade for anyone who went low budget with their first interface purchase. The functionality seems logical and straight forward, the key I/Os are present, and the pre-amps are quality. Might even be a good option for someone looking for a portable backup interface to use outside of their studio. My only constructive feedback is you spent 1 1/2 minutes flipping between block sizes to demonstrate latency levels but you didn't tell us what you were running through your DAW. How many tracks? How many plugins? What type of plugins? What virtual instruments you were using? Were the tracks rendered or were the plugins actively running? Etc. Also, if you mentioned operating on PC or MAC then I missed it. This might not be a big deal for folks just getting started, especially considering the very affordable price point. For people with a bit more experience, especially those tracking vocals or mic'd instruments, it's one of the most important considerations. When I upgraded my interface last year, I spent a lot of time researching specs and placing them in the context of my hybrid needs (in the box and 500 series components, real and virtual instruments). Much like a math problem, the variables reduced down to a small set of factors: #1 latency, #2 mic/line input options, and #3 price. It's not that the other features/components aren't important, rather within most price ranges they are fairly equivalent between manufacturers. Anyway, you did a nice job presenting information and viewers can take away some useful information from your video. I don't make videos so I don't know how hard it is to make edits, but maybe you could edit in a graphic showing what is being processed during your latency demo.

Eh. I just got Audient's EVO 8 a couple of weeks ago. THAT is what I've been looking for in an Audio interface for a long time! 4 USB tracks! Wow! No latency on my 5 year old Lenovo laptop! Wow! Can loopback audio from KZfaq or MP3 or MP4 on to an audio track! Wow! Need I say more? 😁👌👍

Jacob I nearly went for audient id14 mk2 on your advice! then saw your review on antelops zen go(MASSIVE HEADACH AAAAAH), the one thing that puts me off the zen go; is as you mentioned inability to add external stuff but i like to see you try something in line to see if that would work. Jacob you also mention the mic pre on id14 mk2 are good whats the real world difference and im not overly keen on being stuck in the box or same box the other option is to pay a hefty price over 2 grand for antelope studio to get outside stuff in and i spend more time reading reviews than mixing or recording anything; its just I want that quality so i can degrade it and spoil it to my own liking HAHAHA yes you guessed it i gone covid mad. Good Job excellent.

For me, the best improvement is no longer needing an external power supply to use phantom power. On the original iD14, 90% of the time I don't need phantom power, so I don't use the AC. Then when I do plug in a condenser mic, I inevitably spend 5 minutes trying to figure out why it's not working. (A phantom power status LED would've helped here, too.)

Another solid review. These manufacturers keep making it difficult to decide. The Zen GO has me intrigued at the moment, while this upgrade is also a strong contender. If the GO had a bit more connectivity I'd definitely go with it. I'm hoping Audient upgrades the id22 shortly. The increased connectivity is a plus.

@@JacobDarkOfficial I had contacted them as well, with their reply being they "Can't comment on future products." I think all these companies are missing the boat with their "You can throw it in a backpack" mantra. I think there are many out here who would prefer a rack mounted unit for their home studios in a $500-700 price range with more connectivity and features than some of these fine desk top units offer. Kind of like a Presonus 1824c, but with better specs (USB 3, chipset features like the GO, and improved connectivity like the ability for inserts in the chain, for example). Miniaturization doesn't speak to me. Improved specs and features in a reasonable price range does in a rack mount, while keeping it in a somewhat affordable range. I expect to see a few of these companies unleash what I'm talking about within the year. Possibly Blacklion, or maybe even the next GO or even an Audient.

Thanks for the review, I purchased the ID14 MK2 and two days later it’s going back. Compared to my SSL2+ the microphone preamp‘s are pretty underwhelming. They only go to 58 dB of gain versus the 62 dB on my SSL. Not just that but the tone and character and overall sound is not as beefy and in your face or crunchy as the SSL even without 4K. I like the look and the aesthetics of the ID14 but that’s about where it ends. The sound on the SSL is far superior in my opinion. I would love to see your take on a direct comparison between the two of them. Thanks again for the review.

I see the control panel for this has lots of added functionality, but is there no way to switch between monitors with the multiple outputs of e.g. the Motu M4 or SSL 2+? With those latter two, is one limited to merely selecting the outputs within the DAW... or can they be configured so that the same audio plays through all outputs (in which case one could manually switch monitors on/off)?

In theory, I 'm sure a lot of people (if it's due to familiarity or marketing hype) would say the Audient is "better" because of those 2 things you mentioned, but anymore, I think it's massively splitting hairs, and so many interfaces sound really good. The Zen Go also touts pristine pres & "class-leading converters," so there's that. But the question prob with the Zen is do you see great benefit of being able to print the sounds of the plug-ins to your recording? If so, what you've got with that product is the re-creation of a channel strip on the way in.

Thanks for the demo. A detail of your driver selection threw me off. Noticing the Mac environment, you selected a Windows driver. Was that just an editing jump, or do you actually run the software in a virtual pc? Another question, will a Mac Pro or MacBook Pro (late 2011) draw sufficient power for the Audient, or will only a newer machine with either usb-c/usb-3 (input port) be required? Besides a guitar with an external effects processor, I'd also be connecting a condenser mic via xlr. FYI: I'm considering an upgrade from Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 DSP, purchased back in 2012 - a firewire connection. Thanks in advance for the suggestions/information. Have a blessed day.

The digital input is used to link up to 8 channels via the ADAT protocol. I don't know of any PC outputting through ADAT, unless you use a specialized PCI-e sound card. You have two outputs however; left the ADAT in alone - it's very useful for TV audio and console streaming! - get a Sound blaster card on one of your PCs, and route one of the pair of outputs to the Sound blaster PCI-e card. That's how I would do it. Cheers!

Hey do you think this sounds the same as the id22? I mean I know the id22 has burr brown converters but this new id14 does not, and I know that the specs of the new id14 is slightly better then the id22 but still I know lower class converters with high specs aren’t as good as high class converters with low specs , what are you’re thoughts on this?
@JacobDarkOfficial
@JacobDarkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
I've never used the iD22 so I can't comment on that but the iD22 has been out for some time. I suspect this newer model, while not Burr Brown, will perform just as amazing. For $299 you really can't lose.

I had the ID22 and the new ID14 MK2 . The ID22 is like comparing a Rolls-Royce to a Camry. It is on a completely different level. It sounds high end, the preamp‘s are glorious and the converters are the best I have ever heard in any audio interface, although the RME Babyface Pro FS might be on par. The new ID14 MK2 sounds weak, thin and shrill in comparison. No body and no low end. However I did like the headphone output which is very good. Other than that I have no idea how Audient dropped the ball on this one. On a bad note, the ID22 aside from sounding amazing has reliability issues. I’d probably look into the Audient ID44 is you want top notch specs.

@perfectalpha
@perfectalpha 3 жыл бұрын
I had a Steinberg UR44 and I had to get rid of that a few years ago because the preamps had too much noise and at the time I had a dynamic mic. Also, the headphone amp was complete weak sauce. Any interface by and large will be fine, but I ended up getting a PreSonus Studio 1810 which is pretty nice, but not ultimate. I'm trying to debate between the SSL 2+, Audient Id14 mkii, and the Antelope Audio Zen Pro Go. My gut says the Zen Pro, but when I listened to the audio on Jacob's video, there was noise in the background that was fairly audible which gives me real cause for concern. The Audient sounds clean in this video and the SSL is pretty much universally praised. Tough decisions. Jacob if you see this, what would you do?
@JacobDarkOfficial
@JacobDarkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
The noise in the Zen video was my fault, I rushed that video out and realized I didn't set my gain correctly after I had already uploaded. Imo Zen Go would be top pick but you're paying more as well

Now... How does this stands up against apollo solo?
@JacobDarkOfficial
@JacobDarkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
I personally would never invest in UA simply because I have a billion Waves plugins already so wouldn't want to reinvest in those same plugins all over again with the UA versions, I did purchase an Apollo about 2 years ago but it caused pops and crackles constantly on PC, support couldn't help solve the issue so I returned it. This may have been fixed since with the newer USB drivers but again, Im set with the plugins I already own

@@JacobDarkOfficial Thanks for the reply. I think I'm mostly concerned about the quality of the converters where the apollo still has an obvious lead but can the sound quality be really heard is questionable?? And then obviously the unison pre amp with it's changeable impedance inside the physical pres would probably still do better then just slapping a waves pre amp plugin onto a recorded track thru audient pres?? But still have to say that those audient pres sound very transparent which is a good thing in such a chain.
@JacobDarkOfficial
@JacobDarkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Imo converter quality is going to be very close it's probably not audible to the human ear, these new interfaces are VERY good. If you just want transparent "clean" the Audient is great for sure but I can totally see Unison pres as a reason for going Solo

@@ryanmakenna I've owned a apollo twin mkii for awhile now. Tbh if you don't want the plugins I would say no. I just got the audient id22 and imo opinion its much better than apollo. Call me crazy but everything opened up more (AD/DA CONVERTORS are stellar) and didn't sound muddy like the apollo. I opened up older projects and was like omg I can't even believe I thought that was a good mix. My plan was also to buy a tlm 102 because I can be a bit sibilant on my nta2000. I don't even want a new mic anymore. The way the preamp shapes the vocal its no where near like it was. Its clean but to me it has a just awesome texture to it. Take that and I can use my compressors I had in the studio and use them as a send without a external preamp and I think its a no brainer for audient. I still have the apollo because Ive sunk alot into plugins but the quality is night and day to get totally honest.
