For me, this unit is all about getting a great direct guitar tone into the DAW, and then choosing how you want to process it later. It's not the first unit to have a re-amp feature, but it's very useful for recording a performance, then later deciding which amp to use and move the microphone(s) around to get the best sound without having to concentrate on your playing.

I get what you're saying but then wouldn't it be like playing through an amp then out to another amp? Plugins are designed to work with direct in dry tones. I'd be curious how this thing would sound in conjunction with something like Bias.

Great idea for a video: best attenuated home use valve combo. This is different to previous Anderton’s vids in 2 ways: firstly, you could compare different brands and secondly you could compare the bedroom setting of larger amps. The conclusion usually drawn from reviewing a range of amps is that the higher wattage and larger speaker size amps are better. But which is better for home use, a Marshall Origin 50 on 3 watts or 0.5 watts, a HT-5 on 0.5 watts or a Vox AC4 (plus on Orange in bedroom mode etc). Would love to see this one, so please consider it!

I think it is very cool, I use a rack tube pre-amp (just the left and right returns) the output drives my ADA Microcab II and Stereo power amp simultaneously. I can play with or with out the amp. I get my pedal board signal fed through the tube pre-amp. It is actually neutral, since I am not running through the eq section. The tube signal is passing through to my ADA Microcab II. I have made many nice recordings quietly and with the tube signal going to the recorder. My latest video, happens to show what I am talking about. I do like the concept of an audio interface for guitar with tubes in it. ART has a small mixer with a tube in it that is similar. I like the digital in and output options on this product.

Hi Matthias, the tube preamp will only be active when you are recording through it, it won't affect your monitoring path at all. In that regard it will still act as you would expect from any normal interface. It will also provide you with a lot of clarity as the quality of our converters is very high. Hope that helps!

Maybe Lee’s problem with the audio from digital stuff is the monitors. Set up a 4-12 on each side of him for payback from the computer. Okay, not to that extreme, but I was thinking that was the major issue with the audio out on the amp Lee and Rob demonstrated yesterday. You might need better monitors for the video room.

I don't think you're wrong but I think there just is a different feel to sound coming from speakers vs cabs. Might even be that one tends to be higher up! But I think it comes down to 20 years doing one thing and 0 years doing another. I've played through my PC for long, 0 latency and the punch of 'real' amps and cabs kind of scare me!

I think this is interesting but... I’d almost like to play thru one and see if it sounds much different than a regular inexpensive two or four channel interface and something like Guitar Rig Pro or Positive Grid. (I’m talking inexpensive alternatives) It kinda turned me off as soon I heard, “you can buy” more cabinets if you would like, “there are a few included”. I hate paying, what, $600-ish for something that then I need to keep feeding cash at to make it sound right. The graphics are pretty slick and the unit looks good, I do like that. There are lots of DI’s that also have built in preamp tubes also which can be used like this also, you can use them with pedals too. Thus the confusion... Pete, you are probably right, it’s a new way of doing an old thing. I think it would be cool to see this in a blind test versus some other ways to do this... Cap? Thanks for the very thought provoking review. Buddy

This is a really innovative approach to recording guitar: it mimics a cleanish pedal platform amp + cab + room + mic. The 12ax7 in the preamp is a great idea as many pedals rely on overloading the front end of the amp or some even need a slightly dirty preamp (fuzz) to really shine. These guys have really thought about all we need for recording silently without moving to full digital modelling. Cool. A bit pricey though but for what it does it makes sense.

It's an interface, just like an iRIG or a Scarlett, Presonus, UA Apollo etc. Yes, you need a VST plug-in of some sort, or you can run a pre-amp pedal into it, doesn't seem to have a reactive load in it like the Ox.

Kristan Benson , hi, I decided I want to start a bit of recording about a year ago. It's not as hard or daunting as I first thought. I started with a basic package from andertons. It was a presonus pack with interface, headphones, Mic and a free download of a DAW (studio one which is great). That will get you recording. After that just add to it as you learn more. I now use a loadbox as well with speaker simulation for silent recording. Within a week of having the basic package i had a video on KZfaq (on my other channel)

I love being able to plug my guitar into my laptop when travelling, in hotel room etc. It's no more complicated than posting on FB. I use a basic Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, but would love to have something a bit flasher with no latency. You don't need pedals in front of the interface, you use a decent plug-in in your DAW, of which there are many many many.

I bought this audio card 4-5 months ago. I am extremely disappointed from the unit and audient support. I bought this audio card in order to replace my Scarlett 2i2 1rst gen. After I bought it I re-recorded all the rhythmic guitars for 6 metal songs. After that I was trying to figure out the tone of the guitars using vst plugins. I struggled a lot because I noticed that the signal was getting dirty easily with crackles etc. I did an experiment to see if the valve preamp is noisy and the problem comes from there. Well, increasing the gain of the signal at parts where I was recording but I was not playing the guitar I expected to hear noise floor but I found sth else. Just by recording from the valve circuit and even having the output volume of the unit at 0db, I found out that in the track there was recorded whatever was playing in the background e.g. the metronome. I did the same experiment with a backing track. E.g. I have the rhythmic guitars playing and I play the solo and recording in in another track. A part of the rhythmic guitars was recorded in the solo track. It doesn’t matter if I had the volume of the backing track at 0db. This means that all my new recorded rhythmic guitars have had extra noise from the recorded metronome. Loading vst overdrives, distortion and digital amps the noise was exaggerated and I got more noise. I did the same experiment with the Line in inputs and there was not the same problem. This means that recording from the Valve input, which is why I bought the audio card, is not an option for those who want an as silent as possible DI signal. From the audient support through the email they told me that the unit must be defective and that I had to send it to my seller. My seller told me that the unit was ok and refused to do the above experiment even after I asked audient support to tell him about my problem. Audient support told the seller that everything is ok and that probably I am the one who doesn’t know how to optimize my DAW. After that I found the audient community on facebook I made a video of the experiment and asked a question there. Daniel Mills (technical support manager of Audient) answered this: “A very small amount of cross talk is expected in the valve gain due to the gain staging that is used and the fact it is an unbalanced circuit, however, this will typically be buried well in the noise floor of the input and practically inaudible under normal usage. However, if you are normalising this signal so the loudest peak is a 0dBFS then you will of cause hear this alongside the massively amplified noise floor because of the normalision.” What I did in the video was that: I recorded from the valve input to one track with the guitar plugged in but its volume at 0, while having another track and the metronome playing at the backround. I recorded silence. Then I normalized the signal and apart from noise floor you could hear the metronome and the backing track playing. This is for audient normal. But for me and my needs isn’t. This just makes my DI dirtier when I use different vst amps and overdrives. Another problem unrelated to the previous one is that when I plug an instrument to Line In 2 the leveling meters of the audio unit doesn’t respond. To this question Daniel Mills didn’t even bother to respond. Overall this audio unit sucks big time. I have the chance I would replace it with something else. Don’t buy this unit if you really need clean silent DI tracks.

Features-wise, the one big thing this unit is missing is reverb for monitoring inside the box. Like many guitar players, I don't like listening to a dry signal and I wouldn't dream of using reverb in front of the amp. I currently use Two Notes IR's, and for me, they are incredible, so this would work well from that standpoint. But I'm very skeptical of one 12AX7 adding anything more than a minimal dash of "tubeness", especially if you're going to model important components like the power amp and OT. All that said, there is definitely a market for something like this - just not this version.

It's nothing more then a well designed warm di box combined with a good interface and cab sim. And since most of the guitar players will still want to use their sound with plugins they know, it's quite nice to have a really, really good warm di track, which the sono offers. Also... A lot of people let more gain then that. You're right that you can use this as a all in one solution, but that's a bit of wasted potential to my ears and people i've talked to about that product too.

@@BigMetalDaddy1301 Ofcourse you can use it like that buy why pay more to do the same thing a standard audient soundcard does? (they have jfet input). The concept is the same with the Laney irt but with the laney (as it has a lot of gain potential) you can't mimic other preamps cause its not transparent enough. The goal with this one is to have enough saturation to give an analog pedal the fullness of an amp tone. I think Peter and Lee didnt cover the Sono well.. This Unit is somehow realy cool...Its versatile in smart way but have limitations..Versatile means you can use it as a normal interface with excaellent converters and throw at it all of your favorite vsts like Bias, waves, GR5 , amplitude, Nural DSP etc and get your guitar sound that way ...Or you can go thro the Tube preamp section, run your pedals up front and use the killer 2 notes IR software and get your guitar sound. And of course you can gig with it without a PC or a laptop..The limitations and there is 3 of them.. First, when you are using the preamp section with pedals and the Torpedo IRs, that's a line in which you cant change after..it means you need to dial in your sound and commit to it as a recording.. Second, what if you dont have pedals and you want an overdrive..well you can run a VST preamp.pedal in the daw after the line in right? Wrong..that would be horrible cause amps and overdrive should be before the cabinets Or IRs not after.. Third, when using your pedals thro the amp section, you need to dial them up each time after you change the nobs settings on them, to do a gig for example...yes you can store the preset in the Torpedo software, but that would be only for the IRs and not you external overdrive pedal. So here you go...I personally as a guitar player will get the Sono over any other interface..even with the limitation i stated..

i know its a interface type pedal next time in the end go direct to amp ...i feel your pain captain there is a place for all the computer stuff . Just not inspiring to me feels sterile an i know if you put it through monitors or good speakers ,but for 400 quid it needs tube power section an speaker an its a amp ...,shut off the pc an you got somthing there no affence to studio stuff pete said it best need to feel the amp going an moving ...its like night an day like recorded music or live music expirience...listening on the radio an being at the show ...

@@ProbyWaN1337 I've yet to see a great video of this interface. I like some of the clean tones, but I haven't heard a single good mid to high gain tone from it. It always sound muddy and undefined. It breaks my heart because I love audient interfaces, but they need to update the firmware with some eq changes or something.

I don't know or why the guys not explored the "normal" things, like the tube preamp section through a more complete IR loader or something, at the end it's a Audient product not Two notes; but all the demos sounds like... I don't know, to be honest; and I was very excited about the tube preamp, but the demos ... not exploring too much the thing just exploring the preset handy feature. And c'mon don't dare yet to say the - "recording with a headphone... this or that" or something like "actually better" but without these words at the end... please: we need to buy things yeah to play without bother people, or roommates and so on, but c'mon don't try to say without say cleary you know, elucidate that this bring us the feeling of playing and the feeling of real amp and cabinet ... please stop doing that guys, you don't need at all to be so force affirmative with a "fake plus" to merchan or sell things, some points (subliminal sometimes) really annoy me, damn. I mean, it's a good product, maybe not explored at all in the demos, and yeah: digital stuff mixed with analog stuff is my go to also, but I think we don't need to push so hard on some points that actually still not there and who have possibility to see and fell in the face the sound knows that us is not there yet, and specially say the headphones in some way is the way. In time we'll see youngsters in 20 - 25 years after this era with a premature damaged hearing in future (hope not even myself), or say that some 3 inch speaker can nail 4x12 speakers (and is better pushing this idea to people, instead to put too much effort on the headphones, "we need to listen music together again") and give us the air and the fell of bigger speakers, tube or transistors, and like this we'll have the 40% plus the sounds that maybe we'll never hear in a final recording or in the shows listening majority the sounds of PA's. Some things just can be achieve with ours ears hearing the "source" and not hearing the return "loss" of the mics capturing the loss of the captured sound from preamp passing through the poweramp into a whatever speaker, believe me - listening to the David Gilmour playing in front your face is different to listen Pink Floyd on Vinyl and probably people like Gilmour achieve that inspiration to create through the source to make a legendary final product who gives the hungry to listen that supreme +40% plus of the combination of the source and being, that's why the shows in the past was a big deal not only for socialize and burn some shit.

This is literally just the wall of sound plug in..in an interface. What a useless product, doesn't even sound good without a helix or something on the front..in which case you wouldn't need this.

Having a big vacuum tube in an audio interface for a really niche purpose seems like a big waste of energy and space to me. This is exactly the kind of stuff where the NuTube excels at, so I wonder why they didn't use it considering the technology has been on the market for few years already.
