An interesting thing is that this album sold a shit ton for a cover album, and several of the artists covered on it made way more money just from royalties on this album than any of their own records.

Yep the irony is that with the way that recording contracts historically work, artists who don't sell tons of records actually made mediocre money if any money at all off their own recordings... Including a lot of the bands covered by Metallica. Every band covered by Metallica has been very grateful.

3:01:30 They have many acoustic versions of their songs. They performed acoustic sets at the "Bridge school benefit" concerts in the 90's. Now they have their own benefit concert, "All within my helping hands foundation," where they perform acoustically. They have also released acoustic versions of "All within my hands" and "Blackened" during the covid lock downs.

When it comes to Metallica, cover songs are a big part of their roots and identity. And tbh they take other bands' songs and make them their own better than any other band in my opinion. Both disc1 and disc2 are great. They are Metallica like they are in essence. Gritty, groovy and aggressive (even though the first disc is much more chill because of the phase they were in their style of music).

I once heard James in an interview say that Garage Inc was to “pay back” all the bands they were covering early on that helped them get their start. I guess the idea is Metallica knew they were going to have to pay out royalties to the original bands on this album - some of whom had really short or unsuccessful careers - so they made they album knowing that if it sold well it may have been some of these band’s biggest pay checks of their careers. The writers of the two big singles from it by Bob Segar and Thin Lizzy probably didn’t need any help but I bet the bands that wrote songs like Last Caress and Am I Evil never saw record sales close to what they knew Garage Inc would do.

Long-form, in-depth, chill-vibe music reviews for my favorite artist of all time (Metallica). I started watching your guys's videos back in August, and I've watched every Metallica one since, as well as some other ones. I love this channel, and I love the long-form content. Like the other Chris said, it's good for getting through stuff too. I'll have the video up and listen to it while I do homework (about to graduate college) or when I am playing a casual video game at night. It's nice to hear the technical perspective when it comes to these albums that I've heard dozens of times. Anyway, sorry for the ramble, I just wanted to respond to the question. Great video, guys! They also did a cover of House of the rising sun in a 2020 streaming show, and a lot more during their acoustic shows (Borderline and It's killing me are the most recent ones) And, yes, you should definitely listen to We did it again, it's absolutely horrible and hilarious.

Actually one of the main reasons Metallica did this album (as well as ReLoad and S&M) in such a short span was because they owed record company like 6 more albums after Load and wanted to get out of the contract as quickly as possible. So they put out these three in three years, then they wanted to do another quick one (which turned out to be St. Anger), and the last two were Death Magnetic and Lulu, which obviously took a ton of time.

They’ve done heaps of covers since this release. They usually do covers before they record a new album, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a few unreleased covers from recent years. They did all the Ramones covers in 2003, and since then it’s been sporadic but in studio they’ve covered Iron Maiden, Ennio Morricone, Rainbow, Deep Purple and Kinks. They also recorded some live acoustic covers at numerous Bridge School Benefit gigs and others.

For perspective, Lars mentioned in the interview, to get out of Elektra contract and re claim their masters, they need to release 4 remaining albums before 2000. Load Reload, Garage Inc and S&M.

Diamond Head was a major influence on Metallica, their earliest shows they only had a couple of original songs and would play 4-5 Diamond Head covers along with other NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) cover songs, many of which are on Disc 2 of Garage Inc

Yeah, and listen to Metallica's "Seek & Destroy" next to Diamond Head's "Sucking My Love" and you can soooo hear the influence they had on them at the time. They adored Diamond Head. :-) Rightfully so... Diamond Head was an amazing band.

Hi Patrick, just wondering about how you guys are going to decide what songs (i think it was 4 from memory) you listen to from each of the other bands like Iron maiden, Pantera, Megadeth etc. Is it something the community could take part in with deciding what songs and in what order you do each band and stuff? Guys, you're the only reaction videos I've seen that are worth watching. I have two video ideas for you: 1. take some song you like from the Black Album (because it has the best extras in Deluxe editions) and analyse the changes that were made to that song since riff tape, through demos (Black album Deluxe editions have even multiple demo versions of same songs) rough mixes, alternate takes until final version. 2. same thing but maybe something from older album and see differences in sound of the band over different eras of live performances, i.e Moscow 1991, Cunning Stunts 1996, Through the never 2013(?) Regarding the Metallica + rap part of the conversation, there was a Swizz Beatz track called "We Did It Again" featuring Ja Rule and Metallica. Kirk's wah and James' vocals are present. IIRC the track came out when James was in rehab and not long after Jason quit. To me, it sounded like they took some of James' vocals from their vault and just threw it in the track. It was on the "Biker Boyz" movie soundtrack.

The "beep beep beep" on Die Die My Darling is feedback through a guitar with a pickup turned down and then flicking the toggle switch. Old Ace Frehley trick. I've played this live and know how it was done because I saw the Misfits perform it when they had 2 guitarists in later days

There was some making-of videos recorded for Garage Inc, and there are two things that I definitively remember from them: one is the whiteboard chart where they listed all of the intended songs in rows and had the instrument tracks/stems listed as columns to be checked off for each track as they were recorded. The other is that the guys got together to record gang vocals at some point, though I don't remember for which song. With that said, I can pick up Jason's vocals in the "die die die my darling" part!

"How do they do Master/Ride unplugged?" Funny you should say that! They've made acoustic versions of multiple metal songs at their acoustic charity concerts, where they also do acoustic covers (some from Garage Inc; some new). They've done a studio-tier acoustic version of Blackened, and high quality live acoustic versions of Disposable Heroes, Creeping Death, Enter Sandman, Now That We're Dead, Hardwired, and All Within My Hands (which also got into their S&M2 concert). Besides Hardwired, they're all completely reimagined versions of those songs. They're pretty interesting!

Metallica still does cover songs now and again, especially during their acoustic AWMH charity concerts - they released the 2019 concert in limited vinyl and pretty sure its on spotify. During Chris Cornell Tribute concert they did two SoundGarden covers, also released on limited 7inch via Metallica vinyl club, not sure if those are on spotify or not?

They do have MANY unplugged shows over the years with the "Bridge School Benfit" shows and the "All Within My Hands" Benefit concerts. It is wild. they COMPLETELY re-tooled heavy tunes like "Disposable Heroes", and covered a BUNCH of great tunes. They never stopped doing covers. The Hardwired to Self Destruct Bonus disc had a few covers on it. "Remember Tomorrow" by Iron Maiden. "When a Blind Man Cries" by Deep Purple. "Ronnie Rising" - Medley of Ronnie James Dio tunes. I have a feeling there will be a new Covers album in the near future.

They still do covers to this day. Like other posters have stated, the deluxe version of Harwired, disc 3 has some covers. There's a medley of Dio songs that they did for that trivute album. When A Blind Man Cries, a Deep Purple song is from that tribute album, and the Iron Maiden song Remember Tomorrow. Also Metallica still does plays covers live at their shows still. During the World Magnetic tour in the late 2000's, during their encore, they played various cover songs. Also, they've included Turn The Page and Whiskey In The Jar in their live set to this day

About the "selling a lot of CD's" at 10'50" argument, the thing is that with this album they foremost made rich all the original composers of the songs. I remember an interview from - of course - guy from Diamond Head saying they can live with just the metallica covers royalties, but also Lemmy on "his" movie discussing with actor Billy Bob Thornton in a bar and saying him he received the biggest check of his carreer not from Ace of Spades or any of Motorhead's biggest success, but from the selling of Garage Inc or from the EP "Motorheadache".

This album was a way for Metallica to pay back the artists who influenced them. Many of the bands like Diamond Head have stated they never have to work again based on the money they made from this. Even Lemmy talked about how lucrative this was for him.

Speaking of covers, and Metallica... It might be interesting for you guys to react to the Metallica songs performed by other huge artists during their MTV Icon spotlight from 2003 awards show. And briefly if you dont know, Icon was a show on MTV that honored musicians who were selected as "cultural icons".

Some of my favorite covers NOT on this album: 3. "Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World" by The Ramones 2. "When a Blind Man Cries" by Deep Purple 1. "Remember Tomorrow" by Iron Maiden Note: In the St. Anger era, they recorded a whole EP's worth of Ramones covers as possible releases on a Ramones tribute album. "53rd and 3rd" was the song chosen, I believe. But they also did "Commando," "Cretin Hop," We're a Happy Family," and "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue."

Check out the bonus disc of Hardwired as there are three more recent covers from late 2000s-2010s that you should definitely check out: the aforementioned Ronnie Rising Medley covering Rainbow and Dio, Remember Tomorrow that belongs to Iron Maiden and an amazing rendition of When A Blind Man Cries by Deep Purple. The chorus on "Die Die my Darling" are indeed the 3 other members singing the chorus contrary to what you think lol, there's a video about the making of. And Jason just gives the damn vibe of the chorus of the song

I’ve been a diehard Metallica fan since 2007 (which at this point is well over half my life), and I just want to say Patrick is 100% correct: Ronnie is an absolute banger of a song.

Super late comment, but I think the big reason why they made this was because of all of the existing bootlegs that floated out there of their previous covers. Apparently, the "Garage Days Re-Revisited" EP is among the most bootlegged Metallica releases out there, so I think the band decided to just compile all of their previous covers onto the second disk for those who are looking for those tracks, and then they made a brand new disk of material to catch the interest of hardcore fans who already own the covers or those out there just looking for more Metallica.

I had the please of seeing MetallicA perform the Mercyful Fate medley at Ozzfest 2008 with King Diamond on vocals. That was quite an experience and I was amazed to find out King Diamond lived in Frisco, TX.
