Episode info:
In this podcast episode we investigate the new adventure film Jungle Cruise. Disney’s latest attempt to turn a theme park attraction into a blockbuster movie tries to sidestep some of the ride’s more racist history but still leans on tropes of exoticism and colonial adventurism. We also discuss Disney’s baffling choice to include a series of gay jokes in the movie. Two guests join host Jonathan McIntosh for this conversation: Professor of literature and culture Felicia Lopez and professor of law Carl Williams.

i genuinely love the idea of a reversed indiana jones/tomb raider franchise about reclaiming stolen artefacts and whatnot. you could basically set it in any time period and have it be a globe-trotting adventure; perhaps throw in some heist elements by breaking into the british museum, perhaps there's some fiendishly aristocratic collector to track down. EDIT: tomb restorer!

This was a small aside in this video, but you mentioned the inexperienced person getting dragged into an adventure they didn't ask for and are totally unprepared to handle, and the main character is sort of dismissive and rolls his eyes because of how useless they are, and I just thought: wouldn't a lot of people really relate to the first character, though? Someone who's been thrown headlong into a crisis not of their making by someone with years of experience, experience gotten ostensibly in much more favorable circumstances, who is now just rolling their eyes at you for not knowing how to do anything. I mean. How cool would it be to have a movie sort of following that general formula, veteran adventurer and reluctant tagalong and all, but maybe with some subtle hints that the sidekick is actually a pretty tough, competent person who's just _way_ out of his/her depth. Then, you can have the reveal where the character you've been dismissing the whole time suddenly busts out a whole skill set and saves the day, and when the veteran expresses some surprise they they can be useful they unload this pent-up, "Yeah, I can do this! I've been doing hard physical work since I was sixteen to help support myself and my family, then working my way through medical school while living in a crummy old van I have to keep fixing myself with parts I scavenge from a scrapyard. Of course I know how to fix a car! Of course I'm not physically weak! Of course I can do field medicine! What, did you think just because I know less than nothing about werewolf vampires I don't know anything?!? AND WHY WOULD YOU EXPECT ME TO KNOW HOW TO HANDLE MYSELF AROUND WEREWOLF VAMPIRES?!? WHAT ON EARTH MAKES THAT A REASONABLE EXPECTATION?!?!?!?" You'd have to really clearly set up the payoff, but in this case the trope is well-defined enough that I suspect you could get away with being pretty clear and on-the-nose about it without too many people seeing it coming. And then the audience has a collective flashback to all the times the character shrugged off something painful or difficult, or tried to help with something, but got shut down because they're less cartoonishly levelheaded about everything or asked a stupid question because they don't understand anything that's going on because OF COURSE THEY DON'T. Done right, I think that would be a really cool twist. That is all. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

This movie was supposed to be set in Brazil, as they say in the beginning they are in Porto Velho, a Brazilian city. And as a Brazilian, this was such a huge disappointment. The entire movie has one (1) line in our language (Portuguese), and everything else is incredibly Spanish centric. If they think that the Portuguese, actual European people, aren't worthy of Disney, there is no hope for Disney to even consider doing good representation for the indigenous people. The whole "these indigenous people are good, they make us money and give us information" is awful. And it seemed like they were trying to make fun of misrepresentation, but that doesn't matter when you aren't showing any real representation. At first the natives were aggressive and stereotyped, and when they are revealed to "be good" they are wearing clothes that made it seem like they were children playing dress up in the colonizer's closet and they act like the "civilized" people. Why couldn't they show that traditional native communities are just as capable and wise as the colonizers? Also the part with the "ancient language" was so stupid because there is no register of indigenous Brazilian people having a writing system. But still, their languages were/are very complex and unlike a lot of languages form other regions even in South America. There is a native Brazilian language based on whistling, why couldn't they do something interesting with that? Like, idk, have the tree place open up only when a certain series of whistles is made. And the part of invading the forest to steal a natural resource is so insensitive considering that right now there are a lot of foreign people in the amazon forest doing that exact same thing. Not only is it bad for the economy as they are stealing potentially valuable things, but it has a huge impact on the ecosystem. They polute the rivers that the local people and animals need to survive, steal rare animals and cut down the trees that quite literally keep the country from becoming a desert. (And I know that there are Brazilians who do that too, but that doesn't excuse what the foreigners do). And as someone studying to do research in the medical field, it infuriates me that there isn't a single Brazilian researcher in this movie. As if our medical system didn't have to adapt (mostly on our own) to a lot of tropical diseases that most Americans and Europeans don't even know of. As if latin american researchers weren't already looked down upon enough. Speaking of tropical diseases, they reference dengue in this movie, which could come of as a similar brand of racist as "Africa = ebola", but comes of as dumb, since dengue didn't even exist here in the time the movie was set. This movie also loves anachronisms, because they talk about a currency that was created in 1994. That just smells of "we couldn't bother to hire a consultant", because if they hired one, they would probably be familiar with at least one previous currency. Anyways, sorry for the long rant on a 3 month old video.

It’s not just Disney coming up with the politics of these movies; often, there are government resources flowing to Hollywood (Marvel is a big example) to create storylines propping up the military, imperialism and colonialism as virtuous enterprises.

"They've turned the racism down from 11.." to about 7? lol Nostalgia is about rehabilitating colonialism (in this example). You can't be progressive and nostalgic at the same time, the cognitive dissonance is too great! Or (metaphor time) in trying to move forwards and look backwards you just walk off a cliff.

The thing that bothers me the most is that this movie could've been so good. Or at the very least, better, and not terribly offense. As a setting for your Disney movie, the jungle is top-notch, they can make it beautiful and magical, and play on the inherent mysteriousness of a place that is so difficult to navigate even with the aid of modern technology. All they had to do was make the native people the main characters. That's it. Racism solved. (Ok I'm being cheeky with that last point but it's a step in the right direction)

Just would like to make a small observation to take care to not create an anti-chinese sentiment when you talk on hollywood/different markets - although I understand the importance of discuss the problems. I believe you notice during the discuss but is always good to point out in case you didn't.

Haven't seen it but I'm going to guess that's the brother in the background, and he does something villainous. He's wearing a PINK (gasp!) jacket, and looks dishevelled and sweaty. The other two: perfectly made up.

Hasn't that always been with kids movies, that sexual innuendos and adult references are thrown in to keep the adults awake while hoping the kids miss it, so the parents won't complain they posed awkward questions on the drive home.
