I think the point about the competitiveness of the Kens before they learned about patriarchy was supposed to mirror the real world effect of how those lower down on the socio-economic status ladder are forced to fight each other just to maintain their position in a zero-sum narrative. So I don't think the movie was wrong by not attributing that to the patriarchy. Barbie-land was supposed to be the reverse of the real world, so it would make sense the Kens would be competing against each other, just like how some women feel like they have to sabotage other women in order to get ahead, or at least stay where they are, slightly higher up on the ladder.

But the assumptions made in this video are too broad and based on such a wide and easily challengeable factors that I don’t understand what the point is. Forexample calling things male centered in world that has generally come to understand that women and children get preferential treatment is strange. Are there parts of the world where this is not the case, yes. But these are the exception and not the rule. Ultimately it comes down to this, assuming all the theories are correct, are they bad, and are they evil. What the Barbie movie does is paint and exaggerate tropes about a minority of males to be the norm. The vast majority of men are not in power, not attractive, are not obnoxious, are loving caring, very selfless people who lay down their lives to provide , protect and love their families. That is nothing shown in the Barbie movie. The Barbie movie also ignores that most women want competent men who are generous and industrious, most women are not interested in working 100 hours a week to climb the corporate ladder, or in working in politics . Stories are not relatable when they pile on stereotypes and ignore the individual nature and experiences of characters. They can be entertaining, can hit all the new gender theory plot requirements. Was it entertaining, yes, but it was not relatable. Men don’t sit back and feel like they are represented by Ken, (for all his strengths and weaknesses). That is the main issue, the story , and this video appears to make assumptions about individual men based on unrelatable experiences, but worse still, it teaches women to look down on themselves, and feel less than men simply because of an unfounded theory. Men have weaknesses, men have fears, men are not self confident, they are not praised for just being men, they are constantly talked down on if they are not rich, not tall, not smart, men don’t have it easy just because they have a peepee. And its not because its the patriarchy, its because the world is a difficult place. The Patriachy theory Continuously tells women that they are less then because they are not men , rather than telling them the reality that, LIFE IS HARD, so brace yourself. That is the worst part about the Barbie movie, it leans into women’s fears and offers no solution. Meanwhile men learn quickly that no one is coming to save you, so make it count. The only remedy to the hypothetical Patriarchy is the erasure of men, but good luck with that.

I donno about you, but I do think that men who are marginalized on a gendered basis aren't necessarily doing something wrong by defaulting to self-preservation instead of trying to use the common ground they don't have in order to try and get men who don't take them seriously to respect people who are even lower than them on the hirarchey. Queer men's masculinities often hold a lot less power than you think.

The Me First mentality isn't going to make anything better for anyone. Who will fight for the queer men that feel marginalized if not someone that's higher than them on the proverbial ladder? We all have to fight for each other. The only way things get better for everyone is if we marginalized stick together. A very smart person once told me that silently condemning something sounds exactly the same as silently condoning it.

This movie is actually more of a ken movie than barbie, the highest selling merch was "im Kenough " and im just ken was the most promoted song and ryan Gosling was getting thr most credit and praise for his somewhat mediocre acting.... and in the end barbie was the one who apologized. This movie was not feminist at all but it somehow still pissed people off-

This is backwards. Hard working men built, fought, and died in order to build a society that respects, provides, and cares for women and children. The patriarchy is the RESULT of our society, not the cause of it.

As a guy I tend to resonate a lot with characters like Alan. This section of your video in particular felt like a wake up call because I know when I see something I believe is wrong I should speak up but most of the time I choose to do nothing instead. I try to improve, but oftentimes I find myself unable to even defend myself against personal attacks, so I fear speaking against something like catcalling, for example would only give the other guys in the room yet another thing to single me out and make fun of me.

It should be noted that Allan isn't just queer coded, he is kind of non-binary coded. His reasoning for wanting to leave isn't merely a selfish desire, it's a clear expression of the fact that his desires and his identity quite literally don't fit a cishet-normative binary society, whether under a positive structure, or a patriarchy. He doesn't show any interest towards women (or anyone, for that matter), so his identity isn't at all affiliated to them - whether through pursuing, or rebelling against them. He's also not a "Barbie" nor a "Ken" (even if he's amab), both physically and mentally, being ostracized by both and not desired by either. The film doesn't quite express how hellish his existence must be, especially in such a stereotypical world (though this is obviously intended). He wasn't happy at the beginning of the film, much less after the patriarchy takes over. Sure he is initially compliant and that's obviously bad, but I wouldn't exactly call that "privilege". It would be the same as saying a closeted trans woman would be privileged in a fascist patriarchy where she hadn't (nor couldn't) transition. Overall, the way his character is side-lined is pretty reflective of how trans (especially non-binary) and gender non-confirming people are perpetually excluded in our society. Even this video essay overlooked that to an extent - though I did still enjoy it. As a trans femme who's into men myself, it's revolting (and one of the reasons I wasn't a fan of the film).

I Hear "masculinity" over and over again without definition. I'm presented with "good" and "bad" behaviors, with gender stereotypes attached. I get nothing of value. A culture that keeps pointing stereotipes cannot move forward because its based in those same stereotypes. To change means to imagine, to use desirable conceps, and put undesirable ones to oblivion. Who is Waymond? I would say a interesting, communicative person. This video says he is a good masculinity example. Why is he good? Because he manages to help himself and others. Why is he masculine? I don't know, PCD doesn't know. What is even masculinity? I can only guess is homonim with male, assuming this character's gender. Maybe is about sex, genetics, etc... but I would say it is about stereotypes. This mentality does not liberate anyone of stereotipes, it only changes that cage for a bigger one. One stereotype for another. The human experience, communication, culture, posibilities, all are asummed, none are defined, none are created.

Completely off topic, but with the second and third trait of the patriarchy, my mind went to one of my favorite movies, the devil wears prada. It's a heavy and interesting theme in the movie that Miranda was a woman of power, only able to gain the upper hand by qualities that are often considered masculine. Emotionless presenting, tough decisions. But the film interprets her as a villian, even though the protagonist herself stated if the roles were reversed, no one would have a problem. I think its important to realize the harm of this ideal for both men and women.

In some of the non-movie Star Wars media there’s a concept where the droids that don’t act sentient, like battle droids, just have a specific part of their robot brain designed to keep them just a machine, but when that piece is broken they can gain sentience and become more “human”.

I appreciate this video. Honestly, my personal problem with the feminism of my (millennial) generation, and my women’s studies professors in university has been that it still looks down on femininity and caregiving. I don't think equality means we should all have to turn ourselves into the masculine ideal in order to be in positions of power. I would love to see more celebration of caregiving, sensitivity etc. in the feminist movement.

This was such an important point in the video, because I (like many other trans guys) just sorta immediately attached to Alan and didn't think critically about his role in the story because "Hey, representation kinda!" But you're spot-on about his passivity, and I do relate to it to some extent, it can be very scary as any sort of gnc man in traditionally masculine spaces and you don't want the violence of patriarchy leveled against you. I think it's important to note though, that this is a means of survival in the real world. But the solution is for more men to reject the authority of patriarical masculine and band together to support each other, not cower and flit away from when patriarchy threatens us and leave more marginalized people (women and fem presenting people) to the metaphorical wolves.

As a trans man: women and fem presenting people are not more marginalised than us. For instance we are statistically the most likely to be SAed out of any gender group (even more than trans women). Cis people hold systemic power over us (and yes that includes cis women over trans men). The patriarchy has zero room for trans people of any kind, and as someone who doesn't hide the fact he's trans, I don't magically get granted access to male privilege. Women and fem presenting people are our allies in this fight, but the invisibility of trans men and mascs makes our oppression invisible.

It's just so funny the amount of people who outed themselves as close-minded after this movie. If you think the movie is inherently anti-man or feminist propaganda, you clearly didn't understand the movie. And this goes two ways: Everyone who cheered when the Barbies re-established the Barbiearchy and shut down Keninism, equally misunderstood the movie's message. The real meaning of the movie is so sad and sickening, and I think it's well done. It gave all the men who watched with an open eye a glimpse into what it feels like to be a woman under patriarchy. And all the women who watched with an open eye simply said "well, duh" But you put it very well here. I was fortunate enough to learn what patriarchy actually is just before the movie came out, so I was able to appreciate it. But I admit that there was a long time where I felt personally attacked if somebody talked about patriarchy being bad. Some, who also didn't know what it actually was may have even meant it as a personal attack. But for the most part, it takes learning to fully grasp how it harms everyone, and I think the movie at face value did a pretty good job educating.
