The JBL Charge 5 portable bluetooth speaker was just announced in 2021 but it's predecessor still has plenty of power. In fact, the main driver is fed with the same 30 watts as the new JBL Charge 5, which also has a separate 10 watt channel powering it's newly added high frequency driver.
In this video I'll show you a simple mod that will take your JBL Charge 4 to another level if you like using the LFM (aka low frequency mode or disable DSP). Anyone who got a JBL speaker and used this mode have probably noticed that if you "push in" one radiator, the other has more excursion. But also the bass response improves slightly. That's because the speaker wasn't designed for LFM (obviously) so they've tuned the enclosure for a higher bass frequency (about 65 hz I think). By closing one end (basically eliminating one passive radiator) we are retuning the speaker for a lower frequency. From my tests, with this mod the Charge 4 can easily go down to 40 Hz or even lower giving music a nice low bass punch. Other benefit is that the speakers driver is more controlled so it won't bottom out that easily due to high excursion thus being a bit more protected from damaging. Of course, using LFM is risky either way, so I'm not recommending using it if you're not sure what you're doing and you should always keep volume under 70% to avoid damage.

/ retnikdubs
Test songs:
Wizard - I don't mind
Yaboii - Dynasty

If you liked the video share it with your friends :) *For this to work:* the speaker needs to have it's DSP disabled (aka LFM) by pressing - and BT buttons for 10 sec. and songs have to be heavily bass boosted.

To be honest, all that your doing is capping one of the passive radiators so that more of the bass frequencies go to one passive radiator which therefore lowers excess surface area and creates more pressure which in turn causes more excursion in the one exposed passive radiator. But one side note, try not to overpower it because doing this regularly could potentially create air leaks and damage the actual driver overtime from excess internal pressure.

@AudioCuriosity
@AudioCuriosity 4 жыл бұрын
Most drivers are capable in running even in sealed enclosures with no issues if the power rating isn't exceeded so no worries there. The only real issue would be damaging the radiator in time because of the higher excursion and of course possibly overheating the amp because the high pass filter is disabled.

For thoose who are wondering, the spaker makes pressure inside the speaker which then tries to go out but the air is blocked by the radiator. And the radiator compresses the air into the speaker for better bass sound quality. And there are 2 on portable jbl speakers (not on jbl go, clip and partybox series) and they basically push out. If you use this trick it stops the radiator from moving and because you stopped only one from moving the other one is forced to take the pressure thats meant for both of them. Also sadly i have an xtreme 2 which is much bigger and im not able to make this mod. P.S. If you make the radiators take too much pressure it may rip because they are not made to take that much pressure.
@StaticVapour590
@StaticVapour590 4 жыл бұрын
Best way to do this without that mod is to place the speaker about arm length from corner of the room, this will boost the low frequency output and you can play around with different placement, this works with any speaker. Height you can decide yourself
@AudioCuriosity
@AudioCuriosity 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed, room corners amplify low frequencies, thanks for the additional tip. But with this mod it only gets better because the speaker can produce even lower frequencies which then gets amplified by room placement.

These speakers are tuned for around 80 Hz. Fixing one passive radiator will tune down to about half frequency. You can stick some weights like coins to the passive radiators and you can tune down both. Just keep the extra weights balanced.
@AudioCuriosity
@AudioCuriosity 4 жыл бұрын
The Charge 4 is tuned to around 65 hz I think but yeah I guess you're right. And I've been considering retuning it with weights but that would have been more complicated and semi permanent solution so I chose the simpler method, but might try that also in the future.

@JasonWGamingnProd

Advantages of this mod: -make the bass more direational - Bass sounds louder if it is facing towards you Disadvantage: - you can hear less bass if you are standing from the other side of the speaker Yes, indeed this mod can make you hear louder bass, but please don't take that as a "bass booster". This mod simply block one of the passive radiators, causing it not functioning, so all the bass can only come out from the other passive radiator, which is why you can see it vibrates crazy when he put on the cap. The reason why the bass is louder, is because it focuses the bass to a particular direction, instead of coming out from the left and right passive radiators, the bass now only comes out from the right passive radiator and facing towards you, so you can hear the bass much louder.
@dzsemx
@dzsemx 4 жыл бұрын
Blocking one radiator tunes down the resonant frequency from 80hz to about 40-45Hz. In the meantime you give up a lot of surface area. Attach extra weights to the radiators to tune down to lower frequencies. The weights must be precisely equal on both sides.

OK here’s what you’re doing, you’re creating an Isobarick enclosure. By capping off one side like that the passive radiators are moving in conjunction with each other instead of opposite of each other. This will effectively double the output of the bass response. There’s much more to this explanation but basically this is what you’re doing...double the bass in half the space.
@AudioCuriosity
@AudioCuriosity 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kerry, thanks for your comment. But I wonder, isn't the volume created under the cap way too small to be counted as an actual enclosure? Personally I think that all I'm doing is eliminating a PR and basically retuning the enclosure at a lower frequency. Just like in ported enclosures when you use a narrower port instead of a wider one but with the same length.

It’s cool that you thought of this idea, but kids that don’t care about sound quality will not even give this video a chance. Design a cap to push a “bass enhancing” product and it will do better

I'm willing to bet that it amplifies the whole spectrum. I'd bet a large terracotta vase or pot would be even better. Those little JBL speakers are a serious bang for your buck. My friend has several of them. I just have a little bose color sound link. It's no where near as loud for the money. It's probably a little cleaner though. But JBL is owning everyone for the price, durability, battery life. It's really a no brainer. But I never had one of those brain thingies. So I stick with bose. 😂

Well until they got the JBL 300 partybox and now they just open up the bedroom window thats near the basketball goal! ALSO wants the 1000!

But do you know why? You are creating a sealed enclosure, resonating bass from that side, giving the sound waves something to vibrate and make the tone, and by sealing it, you change from 2 passive radiators to 1. If you place it in a corner, versus in your hand, you get a similar effect, but not with the change in frequency.
@94e88
@94e88 4 жыл бұрын
No, no and no. The reason this works is because the speaker has 2 passive radiators and when one of them gets stopped it lowers the tuning and that reinforces the lower frequencies.
@johng6673
@johng6673 4 жыл бұрын
@@94e88 When you seal off the other side, that passive radiator no longer fully functional. The sealed side will stop the movement on that side, making it more of a sealed enclosure, and the other side will actually be moving much more. Try watching it removed and with it added.
@94e88
@94e88 4 жыл бұрын
@@johng6673 it doesn't make it more like a sealed enclosure, it makes it a deeper tuned passive radiator closure. And yes it does move more because of the reduced radiator("port") area.
@DaGoose
@DaGoose 4 жыл бұрын
@John G No, this mod does not make the speaker a sealed enclosure. @94E You're on the right track so i'll add on: The passive radiator setup on JBL portables is equivalent to a ported speaker enclosure. Think of the 2 passive radiators on JBL's speakers as 2 ports. You have a solid low frequency playing on the speaker so air from the excursion of the drivers will pass in and out through the 2 ports evenly. Now, lets say you cover one port. The air passing in and out from that port will transfer over and stress the other port because that's the only way where air can pass in and out. This is equivalent to what's happening in this video. Motion from the drivers is moving the passive radiators evenly. Covering one passive radiator will double the movement to the other passive radiator because the other passive radiator can't move. Now to explain the frequency drop: A frequency drop is present because there is only one passive radiator active. It's like removing 1 of the 2 ports off of the speaker. This allows lower frequency to be played at the cost of lower efficiency. Meaning, the drivers in the speaker will not reach maximum excursion with this mod in use unless if you feed more power in to the drivers (which will likely blow them). All of this is true according to Hoffman's Iron Law. This is also why JBL doesn't have their portables go down to low frequencies such as 40hz.

@@theolk6726 haha right. but there's one thing you can make to avoid the Boombox radiators make the hitting noise, that is removing the plastic radiator cage from the inside. Is this okay in the long run? I mean since the other pr is covered, the exposed pr is "overworked" which will loosen it in the long run..
@AudioCuriosity
@AudioCuriosity 4 жыл бұрын
Well first off using the speaker with it's filters disable (LFM) is not recommended because the amp and driver's coil will heat up at higher volumes. Regarding the passive radiator yes, it will move more with this mod, so it could get damaged faster over time. However as long as the volume isn't too high, I think the speaker will be fine.
@jonathannocon
@jonathannocon 3 жыл бұрын
Idk... Constricting the driver like that cant be good for either the driver or PR in the long run... I mean, from the looks of it. The idea is your forcing the sound to exit on the other end right instead of it freely moving on both directions? Wouldn’t temporarily cupping that end to see if you like how it sound be the first step? If you like that sound, the JBL Pulse has pretty much that exact sound/setup no mod/hack needed.

FYI Is it safe to use low frequency mode? 1 answer Answer this Question Mario at Customer service · 6 months ago There is no Low Frequency Mode for our speakers. It is a Bypass Mode that turns off the DSP and other functions/features. We do not recommend enabling the bypass function. This may cause the speaker to fail. This is not a function promoted by Harman. This function is specific to internal quality and service testing/repairs. The impact of the low frequency mode on the speaker in the long run includes the following; sound gets distorted at higher volume and the driver will get blown eventually and would be not covered under warranty if the damage is caused by putting the speaker into bypass mode.
@AudioCuriosity
@AudioCuriosity 4 жыл бұрын
It's cool that Harman actually replied to this and of course they're right. It's not recommended if you're not sure what you're doing and be prepared to lose warranty.
