an eldery person talked about a wire recorder they used to have with me the other day and was simply amazed that not only I knew about them but I knew exactly how it worked, how the reel used to wind the wire up and down (they remembered that it did that when I brought it up and told me how the mechanism worked) and how they looked design wise. I told them about you and brought your video of your wire recorder up on my phone and they almost cried seeing it again, I stopped what I was doing and we watched it together while they told me stories of her father using it to pirate music off the radio for christmas and he even used to bring it in the car until the wires started to break too much lmaos! This comment will probably be lost in the mix but I wanted to post it in hopes you'll see it simply because it was a wonderful shared experience for two people of wildly different ages that was entirely and directly thanks to you. :)

I couldn't afford DCC but, for a couple of years before recordable CDs were affordable I used two stereo VHS machines for music recording and playing. Recorded from a CD the sound was much better than a compact cassette. (I originally bought them for recording 'MTV' type content overnight then dubbing the tracks that I liked together into 'mix tapes' of various genres. I had two AV systems set up at opposite ends of the (big 5 bedroom) house linked together so they played the same thing. It added something to parties when those who wanted to chill could kick back in a quieter room and watch the music videos for the music that was playing throughout the house.) Those were the days...

HiFi VHS video was great. I also remember the Now series pre-recorded VHS tapes having loads more tracks than a standard LP for not much more money. I'm surprised they weren't m,ore popular although most people had mono VCRs back then. After years longing for one I bought the first Hi_Fi VHS VCR I saw for less than £300 back in about 1991.

@@BavarianM Minidisc can be fantastic! Lots of nos available (I recommend TDK RXG) and a copy of a cd made on my Tascam MD350 sounds exactly like the original, extremely hard to distinguish. As for repairs and maintenance: my Tascan has never let me down and I know quite a few people/small business that can repair if need be. Use them mainly in my Sony Minidisc Walkman. And that one hasn't let me down once either, in over 25 years.

Oh, but you can have them. The one thing I need to keep reminding myself of is that this is Mat's job. It's very tempting to give in, but I mostly manage to resist. Mostly, because I just ordered Anders Enger Jensen's fifth MiniDisc, which I cannot play in the Sony LISSA set that I bought off Ebay, because the MD deck doesn't really work. And the CD player stopped working as well. But it makes me happy, which is something that cannot be expressed in figures.

While it's been years since I have fired up the home unit (I no longer have that car) I still open the case where I have all the disc stored. Lots of mixed discs in there that were fun to create.

There was a fake ad out for Deadpool being released on VHS and Laserdisc. When I first caught sight of it I was childishly excited. Then the penny dropped. It's great that audio is still being presented in obsolete variants, but a darn pity that video isn't. I would happily stack every artifact Techmoan presents. Love them all. But it's a shame I'll never own a post 2001 production on LD. I imagine that listening to anything post 1980 on 8 track has the same emotional effect as watching a 2016 film on LD would have (VHS bootlegging is an easy option. Whereas LD recorders and blank discs are not so readily available). Great vid, as always, Sire.

These all remind me of my school days. I studied broadcast production (TV & radio). I worked as a switcher at a radio station. A live body wasc necessary to push a button because certain programming ( Dr. Demento and Rock Over London ) came in on LP. The jacket had a listing of all the out cues such as, 3:36 "and now a word from our sponsors..." My job was to push a button and play a local spot on a cart machine. Looked like an 8 track and was soon replaced by Denons CD in a cartridge system.

I don't know when it will be releasing, but there will be a 7" of the single Pasilla off of the album. Thanks for the 8 track mention, Techmoan. I have watched your channel religiously for a few years. I wish you had gotten one of the 12 silver cartridges. Those turned out great. The label tint was kind of a weird light mauve-lavender that didnt seem to look completely amazing with any color cartridge except silver or black. Wish i hadn't thought to do silver carts toward the end of the project, but rather the beginning. Also, should mention that 5 Mark Ronson reel to reel albums are also in existence. One for me, one for Ronson, one for Sony and two for the Columbia UK offices. Was a super fun project, and though the run was only around 50 tapes, it is still kind of a mildly monumemtal event. Though many have released 8 tracks and reels on newer big and small record labels in recent times, this is the first release in those formats by one of the old major record labels in 30 years. Anyone interested in new release 8 tracks and reels, please visit my facebook and instagram pages for if nothing else interesting pics. facebook.com/deadmediatapes/

@xaenon
@xaenon 4 жыл бұрын
@@traxonwax I can't find anything regarding 16 rpm records from Jack White - only reference to that 3rpm thing which was nothing more than a gimmick. I saw a KZfaq video of it years ago, where someone had to rig up a turntable with an external drive to achieve an approximate 3rpm. It was impossible to determine what the sound quality was because the 'music' itself was just a cacophony of shrieks and yowls, but considering that very slow speed, I imagine the sound quality of even good music would be abysmal.

@@danieldaniels7571 Stereo-Pak might be a wee too retro even for me, lol. The last ones sold were, what, 50 years ago? I should talk, though. I actually have a modest collection of 16 rpm records. Including quite a few Seeburg 1000 discs.

Another great video. I really appreciate these and look for more to come...thanks! I was raised in the 60's and 70's on 45s and LPs and while I miss the idea of having a big thing to show off and the album art and inserts, I am very happy having my thousands of tracks (backed up) all in one place and ready to play at the click of a mouse. I think the future of music is that it will mostly be given away as the real money is on the road where the artists should (but unfortunately not always) have more control over the gate. So many great artists were cheated out of their royalties by crocked, creative bookkeeping. That's harder to do in a concert venue.
@patrickjohnson5658

Just curious, when you say all your thousands of tracks are backed up in one place do you mean online in cloud storage, or on portable HDD's, or both? The problem with cloud storage is you have to pay for an internet connection just to hear your music back. I personally prefer to hold all my music outside of the internet on USB's or HDD's.

I love and follow your channel for some years now and the one about the MiniDisc was one of my favorites as I was a big fan of the format when it came out. But it never occurred to that one can get blank MDs nowadays so I am just about to take out my MD recorder that is sitting in a box for more than 12 years to check if it's still working (fingers crossed). May place an order for some blanks soon :)

I always liked Mini Disc. I had a friend that bought a portable player/recorder back around the time they came out. I just thought it was the coolest thing on Earth. Of course, they never really caught on and I had never gotten around to getting one. I also really liked Sony's UMD format too, though I was well aware that it was DOA pretty much at inception. Especially considering the lack of capacity. But I dug them anyway. The optical format is, for the most part, completely dead. But the concept is one I still find very cool regardless. Very cool video, as always. You have one of the most entertaining channels on here, hands down.

Not old format related, but still physical...A lot of Korean artists release elaborate book-style albums (not just cheap plastic shells) with bells and whistles similar to that lovely DCC you showed here. Of course, they stream like the rest of us too, but physical albums sales in Korea are still going strong thanks, in part, to the creativity and collectibility of the medium.

True Colours is the Split Enz album, True Colors is Cyndi Lauper. And according to Musicbrainz (no releation to Split Enz) the "laser-etched" pressing was on an A&M release, the effect was the first use, and added to "discourage counterfeiting" -- which sounds like wishful thinking.

I wanted to point out a company in the Netherlands, "De Bandjesfabriek" (The Tape Factory?), which is specialized in recording on cassette tapes. You can also just buy blank cassettes, cases and templates to print label stickers! And there are a lot of other customization options for the cassettes, like the color of the case or cassette itself!
