My grandma used to make me toad in the hole in a large blackened roasting tin and never used it for anything else other than Yorkshire puddings and using pure dripping and getting the tin hot and part cooking the sausages in the tin and then poring the batter mix over the sausages in seeing the batter mix part cooked in the hot dripping and fat from sausages and she said never to wash the tin and only wipe it out in your Yorkshire puddings never sticking to the tin and rise to high level and my five siblings having mashed potatoes and vegetables and toad-in-the-hole was a regular treat when we were looked after by my grandma.

My grandma also used rhubarb slightly stewed and placed in chunks and batter mix like a toad in the hole sprinkle sugar over rhubarb and served with ice cream or fresh cream or custard. Then I have just modified my using pineapple and apple and pears and gooseberry instead of rhubarb. I call it my battered fruit puddings. I just get the tin hot with a little oil or dripping and pour in the batter mix and quick adding fruits to place in hot oven for approximately 20 minutes. Family and friends always request their own choices in fruits to their liking.

I've seen something similar in a recipe, called clafouti, I think that's the right spelling. We would eat yorkshire pud spread with strawberry jam if there was any left over from the sunday roast.

It's the same mix as a Yorkshire pudding, so if part of it looks like a pudding it's cooked right. If it's all crisp and no pudding it's not worth eating. If your making it yourself make the batter the evening before or in the next morning to let the flour soak, an extra yolk will give you extra crisp on top and lightly pre browning the sausages help. Personally I like a good inch of pudding on the bottom and no chemicals.

They both looked really nice, I'm usually more concerned about the quality of the sausage...the batter can be really tasty but a poor quality tasting sausage can undo that in moments. My mum used to do an extra large Yorkshire pudding in a roasting tin come Sunday dinner. Crispy and light on the outside and centre was also slightly claggy but this was how we liked it as it soaked up all the juices and gravy of the meat. Mum would use beef dripping to make the yorkshire. Also leftover yorkshire pud would get spread with thick strawberry jam for afters....yum!

I think one of the problems with cooking the Yorkshire pudding part is that they put oil in the tray to help cook the Yorkshire pudding but it just heats up as the meal is cooked. Where as when you make your own you get the oil hot on its own before you add the mixture. So any of them you buy end up like these both did. Still with gravy they're not bad. You can buy some where the Yorkshire pudding is already cooked. But they can be a bit dry.
@BaldFoodieGuy2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Matt yes seen them ones. Loads of gravy needed.

Asda Chicken roast, cooked in oven and not microwave. A homemade large yorkshire, put in the oven 20 minutes before end of chicken roast cooking time, and then as much of the roast put into the pudding as possible. Handsome - and oven cooking the chicken roast crispens the potatoes too.

G'day Gareth. How fortunate you are to have a Choice of Toadies, even if they're frozen. They both looked equally as good as each other. Whether it's 2 fat or 3 thin sausages in a baked hole with peas and gravy, they'd be very little left on the plate. I have to make the pudding from scratch to enjoy one. I'll cheat and make it out of puff pastry... Easier. Another honest review today Gareth. Cheers 👍😀🤤🇦🇺

I remember many years ago Gaz... When the UK had Netto stores all around the country... I once stopped off at one to grab something for my evening meal... While i was passing by one day... They used to sell a very cheap but very nice tasting frozen Toad In The Hole... It was a pretty decent size too... It was probably about 500g in weight... It was so large... The only thing i used to have with it was Gravy... As for these two versions... They looked pretty good too... I honestly think that the only difference between these two... Was the amount of Yorkshire Pudding Batter they contained... The extra 110g in the Asda version will have been the extra Batter content... Because like you said... Two thick Sausages versus three thin Sausages... Probably evens themselves out really... There's only one real way to make sure that Sausages are properly and evenly cooked in a Toad In The Hole... And that's to brown the Sausages off... Either in a frying pan... Or in the oven first... Prior to adding the Yorkshire Pudding Batter... Those Sausages that are in the frozen versions... Don't look like they've had any amount of cooking prior to being frozen... Probably to avoid any possible food safety issues... So unfortunately the frozen versions will always be playing second best to a fresh homemade Toad In The Hole... But even so... Some of them are still really rather good... Thanks for the review Gaz... All the best... Cheers mate. 🍺

Everything always says “For best results, cook from frozen” - sometimes, if you like your food lightly fried, like my mam did - in her case, with sausages, chips and beefburgers, cooked = not pink and, when it came to chips, cooked = soft, but not brown - those toads in the hole, my late mother would have said that “That’s too well done for me!”.
