We start out in a substorm growth phase where energy is building up in the magnetotail. What shows during this time are arcs drifting south and eventually out of the field of view. Then things look quiet until the substorm sets off, pushing bright, colored and very dynamic aurora back into the field of view from the south. After the substorm some pulsating aurora is barely visible, but soon a new growth phase sets in with arcs appearing and disappearing, brightening and dimming. As can be seen it is no simple nor predictable process. After the end of the time lapse the sky looked quiet for ~30 minutes, just long enough for me to give up and pack down the equipment before a second substorm blazed across the sky.
