‘Aussie version of Donald Trump’: Labor ‘ridiculously focused’ on Peter Dutton

Sky News host Paul Murray says the next federal election will be all about Labor trying to stop who they believe is the “Aussie version of Donald Trump”, Peter Dutton.
“Let’s pretend that Peter Dutton, the Liberal Party, anyone to the centre right of Australian politics is just as bad as the worst of the MAGA crowd,” Mr Murray said.
“Now this is an ugly political tactic.
“It’s one thing to argue against an opposition but they are of course so ridiculously focused and personally focused on the bloke who has been right on how many issues.
“The entire focus of the government, their supporters in the media is get Dutton, name Dutton, scandalise Dutton, throw as much mud as possible to make it seem like there’s something weird about the guy.”

Dutton and his mates sounded really tough calling for an investigation into the source of Covid in China but what was the outcome? Our biggest trading partner dropped imports of a massive range of Aussie products. I’m sure our producers were ecstatic about the tough talk. If your number one source of income that puts money in Au pockets is our exports, you need to use diplomacy when solving problems with trade partners. Dutton likes to play to a local audience and sound like a big man but the reality is, he harms the country with that approach. Last time I looked our country was situated in Asia. It has some of the fastest growing economies in the world. Is Dutton really going to stand up to China with his pop gun against a military that could literally wipe us off the map. We rely on diplomacy.

A vote for a LNP is a vote for the ALP. They are no different in any metric that actually matters to Australia. These people are not fools. They know that comparing Dutton to Trump will get Dutton MORE votes. Do you not think they know that? The ALP are trying to shut the gate on independent and minor parties and once again creating the illusion that there is a significant difference between the ALP and the LNP. Independents and minor parties had a huge showing last federal election -- over 30% of the primary vote. LNP and ALP are both ramping up the illusion of choice so that fewer people will vote independent/minors. THAT is their real game.

The problem for Labor is twofold, the first is that the opposition party is remarkably stable (early Beazley era stable) and the second is that Dutton is acting exactly how Australians expect an opposition leader to act. He is not a populist, he's not leading a cult of personality, he is not a person who can be easily baited, he will not play into their talking points but won't hide from them either. His marginal seat has been a top priority for Labor for the last two decades and Dutton's come under relentless personal attacks in each of those campaigns, he knows how to beat them at this game.

Dickson can't be too marginal, Dutton won by 11 points in 2022, and the seat has only been labor twice in the last 30+ years. He _is_ a populist, he responds to Labor policy or pronouncements with simplistic babble which is often misleading and aimed at the lowest common denominator. If not playing into their talking points, why has he failed to establish his own turf? He hasn't convinced the public "this is who I am & where I stand". Not in 2 years. "remarkably stable"? No, Albo isn't running scared. ALP aren't fools. They are "criticising" Dutton so he will get votes instead of independent and minor parties. They are scared of the independents and minors because the latter got over 30% of the primary vote last federal election. ALP = LNP in 95% of their policies and the 5% they differ on make little difference. The choice between ALP and LNP is an illusion.

Peter Dutton is the best thing to happen for the Australian liberal party since John Howard. Some will look back on Peter's time as a politician as not being a worthy party leader. Every great political leader had to mature & development as a politician before achieving greatness . Peter Dutton is thinking about the issues that concern & are affecting Australians the most & is currently working on his policy changes he will make when he takes over the office after the next federal election repairing the colossal amount of damage the Australian labour government leave behind that they have caused during their time in power going to take some time to fix as the labour government have almost broken everything they have touched. i believe in Peter Dutton . he has that empowering confidence that he will do the best he can do for the Australian citizens & Australian foreign relations . Peters time as a police officer gives Peter that knowledge about the real issues that are in the communities & any police officer will tell you they get to witness & see the very best in people & the very worst in people . they have seen the families that struggle to survive & often deal with helping the homeless . the experience Peter has from his past career before entering into politics makes Peter Dutton the man with the most promise from all the current politicians we have at this time . . In any case i believe a child graduating into primary school could do a better job than Anthony Albanese is doing.

What’s wrong with Trump? I’d be honoured to be compared to Trump if I were Dutton. However I think it’s a bit of a stretch. Dutton is nowhere near the man Trump is. Trump has more balls. 😎👊👍🇦🇺

Times up for Dutton. The Libs need a new leader that can put the ‘no’ vote behind them. At the moment Libs are seen as the party of negativity because of the success of the ‘No’ campaigns. A new leader needs to step up, one without baggage.

Not a bit like Trump, Dutton is articulate, truthful and pretty honest. Everything Albanese is not. I thought Dutton was relatively unelectable a year ago but labour are making him look better and better all the time. At least he has some spine and integrity. Anyone on the right with a spine is villainised with every mud slinging half truth that can be mustered. Labour should be very afraid of the quiet Australians. We had our say on the voice.

Ok, let's buy into that hypothesis, Dutton equals Trump, but in that case we surely have to accept that Albo equals Biden. We also see that the more that the Dems and the media beats up on Trump, the stronger he gets in the electorate. So, if that forms part of the analogy, then the more Albo and his team of Dutton bashers beats up on Dutton, the stronger Dutton will get. So, bring it on, go for it, let them beat the snot out of Dutton, it will only make him stronger. "Dutton is a problem" is not much of a policy from the Labor camp. If that's all they have as a policy, Dutton will surely win the next election.
