One city that has received outsized attention from American Airlines in 2021 is Austin. The capital of Texas and one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the United States, the city is becoming a hub for business, education, and culture. While much of American’s growth is concentrated around its hubs, Austin is a bit of an outlier, given that the airline serves numerous destinations nonstop from the city. Speaking on an exclusive webinar interview with Simple Flying, Vasu Raja, Chief Revenue Officer of American Airlines, discussed the airline’s presence in the city.

We don't pronounce it ray-lee in England either, so his pronunciation is weird no matter which side of the Atlantic you are. I'm grimacing at the way he's saying Austin too.

As much as I like and have a bias towards AA, they do have some issues that they need to resolve in order to compete with Delta in terms of comfort and service.

Agreed. I've actually switched most of my business to UA since AA has degraded their service so much while UA is going in the opposite direction.

@@johniii8147 yeah, I fly American mostly because I fly to Dallas more than half the time, and Southwest only offers flights at bad times where AA flies 4 or 5 times a day on mainline planes like 738 or 319. But I also fly Delta somewhat frequently to MSP

@@jackson3190 I get you i lived in Dallas for a few years so AA was always the go to. I'm back in Chicago now so UA typically has the better schedule and service. I've logged well over 2 million miles on AA but it just went down hill and had been going down hill for years even pre merger.

@@johniii8147 I never lived in Dallas. Just family there and business trips. I can get on a flight at 7:00am and be there 8:30 or 9:00, then come back home and be at home before midnight

Interestingly enough, big percentages of Americans didn't travel internationally (including trips to Canada or Mexico). So AA's main selling point is their international routes that domestic Airlines like Southwest or Spirit didn't served. Other than that, there isn't many reason for many people to choose them.

It's pronounced "RAH-LEE". American had a hub in Raleigh in the 1990s and it failed. However, Raleigh has grown dramatically and is a much larger metro now. Raleigh is likely too close to Charlotte (AA's Southeastern hub as a result of the merger with USAirways) to become a focus city/mini-hub for AA again for a few reasons: 1) DFW is a much larger metro area with far more O&D traffic than Charlotte. 2) The Charlotte hub is highly dependent on connecting traffic (more so than DFW) 3) AA depends on high fares from business travelers to feed their Charlotte hub and Raleigh is a great market to do just that for AA.

@@MrFloppy131 There is no "proper" English, just different varieties. Modern British English and American English are equally distant from the form they both branched off from. But when talking about place names, it's usually customary to use local pronunciation.

I flew into Austin with AA. It was a lively airport for sure. Although the layover in Dallas, holy crap that's a large airport lol

RDU was at one time an American Hub pre merger. They abandoned it along with BNA. Things like that tend to stick in peoples memory

AA bought TWA and "promised" to keep MCI as both a focus airport and maintenance hub. Within a couple of years both were abandoned - I get it, if the business model doesn't work, it doesn't work - but they knew that pre-merger/purchase. Thousands of amazing jobs dried up and blew away - few made the move to Tulsa to keep turning wrenches. There remains a VERY deep dislike/hatred for AA in Kansas City to this day, even after 20 years.

LONG time ago now. They shut down those hubs back in 95/96. Never really made any sense to have two hubs in midsized cities so close togeather. Small hubs like that rarely work as AA learned.

AA not pushing everything from AUS through a hub first is a fairly big leap of faith, and hopefully they'll keep it up for many other locations. AA's hubs can be brutal experiences.

Delta wasn’t always what it currently is now. American was the airline to beat back in the day! People world be so surprised and shocked to find out if you were working for American because it was that great. After the attacks and the merger things took a huge turn. I believe American is going to come back 💪🏻.

It's interesting seeing the current state of air traffic in Austin, compared to when I lived there in the late 70's/early 80's and had to deal with old Mueller Airport, whose single runway was barely long enough for 737's (most traffic was 727's and DC-8's), and which had a problem in that it wasn't level, but was "humped": from one end of the runway, pilots could not see a plane at the opposite end. (Just past one end was an 8-lane interstate; the other end dropped off rather precipitously, down to a local road and a golf course.)

Having moved to AUS from Los Angeles last September, the frequency of flights and added destinations is very nice to have and has taken some of the sting out of becoming a Texan. (btw - I’m AAdvantage Platinum Pro) At least I’m in the “blue dot”!

US airlines generally are allergic to using secondary airports. But the pattern of "growing city, no nearby* hub" is the only exception I see to that rule. Nearby is also something that they define subjectively and if the San Francisco Bay Area is anything to go by, a 90 minute drive without traffic is seen as "near" a hub. For example, airlines have all but abandoned Oakland and San Jose. For those of us that don't live in the core of the Bay Area, going to SFO is at least an hour's drive. Which would make San Jose or Oakland perfect. But Oakland has been abandoned by American and United with only Delta as the only legacy carrier and Southwest as the big carrier there. San Jose faired better, it still has a skeletal level of service compared to Oakland's near abandonment, but that has more to do with Silicon Valley having prestige even though the Greater East Bay has roughly the same population which is underserved by flights through Oakland. And the big airlines constantly complain about SFO being over crowded. And Oakland is right there, under used as a passenger airport except by Southwest and other budget carriers.

This is all well and good. However until AA stops putting profit over people, they will never achieve the prestige of Delta. Delta is the best US airline because they focus on people first. Because of that, Delta makes huge profits. They don't believe in treating people like cattle. They don't try to cram people into every nook and cranny, like American or United. Even Delta's economy class is more comfortable. And by making the difference between economy and comfort plus smaller money-wise, they entice more people to upgrade. So they end up making more in profit than the other two legacy carriers. People are usually will pay a bit more to be comfortable, not be treated like cattle. Ed Bastian is a pretty smart guy!

As someone who used to work for Delta. Delta does the same exact thing, you just don’t see it. A contractor company called Unifi owns shares of Delta and they treat their workers like slaves. Non-Union, terrible benefits, decent pay because they have to by the state. Delta is not perfect like a lot of y’all make it out to be. Oh and they’re still the only domestic carrier that still flies the 717s. Have you been in the bins of a 717? Another McDonnell-Douglas failure.

As you can see, I'm very easily entertained, lol! I still maintain Delta is our best legacy carrier, though. American and United SUUUUUUUUCK!

AA is becoming a victim of its own success in Austin. The cues for check in a bag with AA in Austin are horrendous (probably close to 2-3hours) while other carriers don't even have a cue.

5:43 "There are limits to how far American could push this model. Doing it too much would weaken its hubs, ..." Perhaps that is not a bad thing, eliminating some back hauling is probably good for carbon emissions. American could learn from the success low cost carriers have had with point-to-point networks, and go beyond servicing long skinny routes to long medium-volume routes as well. If it can do that before Delta and United get into the game, all the better.

United has not pulled out. They serve Austin extensively from all their hubs. IAH/ORD/DEN/EWR/SFO etc. They easily have more than 30+ flights a day out of Austin. It's just not one of their designated "focus" city. AUS is still very well connected to the their network.

American airlines is like a third world airline their seasts are dirty and unkempt as well as you are given a paltry packet of pretzels and juice on a 5 hour flight. Their customer service is non-existent and they never honour their vouchers which when try to use you are told it has to be part of a fee paying fare.

@@charfras4767 My point: the current overall AA premium product (incl. lounges, terminals, customer service, etc.) is at a similar level as that of other airlines 40 years ago. My AA first class trans-atlantic flight was about as good as an USSR Aeroflot flight in the 1980s (on several points, AA was even worse). PS: As soon as Emirates started to take off, it was above and beyond AA lousy level. Emirates was like a BMW X7 LCI to an old AA Ford Taurus.
