I thoroughly enjoyed watching you build this ambulance model, I confess I'm very impressed by the ease it assembled because my experience of airfix 1/35 vehicles left me vowing to never buy another because of the poor quality of the moulding. I admit to being disabled in my left hand but I persevered for weeks trying to get get the darn thing to square up (it was a land rover set) I made so many minor adjustments using sand paper, files and my trusty craft knife I eventually got so fed up I literally chucked the whole lot in a box where it remains to this day. This was about 4/5 years ago now but having watched how well your model components went together I might just swallow my disgust and treat myself to one of these kits. I've seen the film lots of times and admit it is one of my favourite ww2 movies I may even be inspired to build a diorama and use some of the land rover bits lol great video thank you 👍

Weathering rule of thumb. If the vehicle is on tarmac or hard ground, the tread should be clean with weathering on the sidewalls. If the vehicle is on soft ground or mud, the terrain sticks to the tread area with less -- or dusting -- on the sidewalls. Cheers!

Cheers Randy! I will bear it in mind. What about sand as it's dry?
@randytaylor1258
@randytaylor1258 2 жыл бұрын
@@garys_stuff Sand can be hard -- like Malcolm Campbell in Bluebird at Daytona Beach -' or it can be sticky and muddy. It also depends on the speed of movement -- centrifugal force will throw off mud at speed. Wet sand will be darker than dry sand but careful about using gloss to look wet -- a little goes a long way. A viewer will implicitly infer the terrain from how the vehicle is weathered -- it's all about telling a story in the viewer's head.

Very well done,Gary. I thoroughly enjoyed your video and found your calm delivery of the build process nice to follow along with. I don't understand why Airfix didn't mould the roof vents as two separate parts,with flanges. This would allow for one big disc 'decal',and two for colour matched vent decals. The yellow disc is a vehicle weight classification for bridge crossing and shipping,not a divisional mark. Thanks for showing and I look forward to seeing your diorama 👍😎Pete 🤓. p.s. I stayed till the end,I know your secret👍😃well done
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pete! Just checking the divisional markings in the movie - they are dulled down versions of what Airfix provide so I'll add them. Interesting about the weight classification as it is different for some of the schemes - maybe on Home service they didn't carry as much water and stuff so were a bit lighter?

What you keep calling a divisional plate is more likely a bridge plate, stating the vehicle is 5 tones, you can view on certain bridges weight limits for two way traffic or heavier weight one way traffic. Look up street view of the canal bridge in Aldershot, Queen,s Ave. There it shows a yellow plate, 30 two way or 50 one way. Also you where correct in resting the mud guard against the rectangular storage box, as that is fixed to the vehicle & the cross bar would be hinged to open & slide out the box/container 👍🏻
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
Thanks Glenn - a few people spotted that gaffe. I think my confusion came from the desert Katy and the Camberley Katy having different badges, but I suspect that loading up a Katy as an operational ambulance with medical supplies, water etc. pushes it into a higher weight band (5 instead of 4).

Tip I'd give is not to use black over the light paint more a brown or grey blacks to much for the light paint or even a black and brown mix a grey is good for ochar sand tones but we Are all learning on each build and using a gloss or semi gloss is fine for pannal line washes but then you can't blend on it afterwards for more weather so give it a matt coat after your gloss for your washes and definitely pigments for the grip so it doesn't just run off! The blending you can get on a matt coat is superb it took me a while to figure this out for myself so if I can give anyone that tip to help along the way I'm only to happy!
@garys_stuff

Can I suggest with large and / or geometric decals like the red crosses and circles, painting them on instead? The original decal could be used to get the size, then a compass to draw a circle for a template, mask the white circle off and paint the cross. Probably less painful than the thin decals.

@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Barry - you do need a few basics, the best is a spare ceramic tile to cut on because you get a really good edge that way. If you are left with any bits on the edge of the piece, hold it between the jaws of a pair of pliers until the extra bit is only just poking above the jaws and use a small file or sandpaper to get rid of it. But I've not had any problems so far with getting a very close cut. Might be a different story with the Gecko kit and the huge amount of PE it has!!!

I think that with a small drill and a bit of steel wire (such as paper clip) one could do working hinges for the rear doors. You could place them open or closed however you wanted. And they would not break off whenever someone breathed on them too hard ;)
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, in theory but I think it would have to be smaller than a paper clip - somewhere around 0.1 or 0.2mm wire. And they wouldn't break when someone says "ooh, what's inside?" and tries to open the door....

That's nice to know mate! Builds can take ages but there's no need to give up on them. Back when I was working it would take me three or four weeks for a 1/72 aeroplane at least! I can only keep up a faster rate because I'm a man of (ahem...) leisure. But even then other things demand time and I have to leave a kit alone for a while, itching to get back but knowing other things have to take priority. Great vid Gary watched a few times as building this myself... Not impressed with the way the cab roof fits or main roof at the dry fit fiddle around stage ... Pity the rear doors don't open and close its one or the other. Usually build aircraft but done many Tamiya armour and vehicles can't say this kit is the best I've encountered fit wise. Many of your techniques use myself.. home made sanding sticks etc.

I wonder if the photo etch on the air vents was designed to go on after the big decal, in order to make the decal fit a bit easier?
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
That is a very smart idea - sadly i don't think Airfix/Academy thought of that as they don't say anything about painting and applying the decal first, the PE is in among the build instructions. But that would be an answer to a lot of detail problems and would cover any minor tears around the vent. Genius idea!

@@garys_stuff Thanks! Often the kit designers are not the people creating the instructions, which is why you can sometimes find another way, like you did with the steering column.

People like that deserve all the bile they get thrown back at them. If you have that attitude, you'll always find a rivet-counter who is better than you. If you just admit that everyone does this hobby for different reasons, you soon learn there is rarely any 'right' or 'wrong'. I think your idea was inspired. Better off not listening to people like that mate.

Yes I am going to do the Gecko too. No figures for either diorama yet as I haven't found any suitable in 1/35th, but I'll keep looking!!!

Thanks for sharing. I have thoroughly enjoyed both this and Day 1. Having never made a diorama I rather want to have a go at this one so will wait for that episode with great interest. I note some aftermarket is beginning to arrive on the scene. I purchased a set of pillows, blankets and rucksacks from Red Zebra and they are going to work really well. I’d would like to build a set of the sand mats that are fitted to Katy at the front - any suggestions on how this could be done will be gratefully received.

OK, the sand mats are in part three! But what I did was got a length of 1cm wide paper, glued in some 12mm long styrene rods (I used 0.75mm) at intervals then glued another strip of paper on top. Rolled it all up and I got my sand mats. Not as fine detail as they should be, a bit chunky, but OK for me. Again, this might be something the aftermarket does... Also noticed the Ice Cold divisional markings are on the decal sheet but not referenced anywhere. I also made up a tow rope to dangle round the tow bar at the front and a map to sit next to the driver! I have put a photo on Twitter @Garys_stuff if you do that...

@@garys_stuff Thanks very much for your reply. I have looked on Twitter and the sand mats look good. I will have a play and see what I can do. My first thought is that because I build mostly ships, I have a heap of spare photoetch including the frets. If I cut that up instead of styrene I might get a finer detail. I saw they snuck in badge 21 on the decal sheet which I assume is the divisional badge as it can be seen very faintly in the Ice Cold stills. I have however no idea what division that is. Wikipedia tells me they were an RASC Motor Ambulance Company but my albeit, very quick research has failed to show what Division.

Yes I would - the instructions are easy enough to follow and it goes together pretty well. I would encourage you to dry fit everything, I do anyway but it will help with the Katy as now and a gain you might think "now, where do they mean that goes?" and by dry fitting it will become very clear. And watching my video I hope too! It's my first 1/35 vehicle too, so can't be too hard!!
