To those critical of Austin's "bounce-back" idea for helicopter ground effect, I would say this: remember this is a model, a simulation. Austin is looking for ways to model some rotocraft behaviours that can be reduced to code. Airflow in rotor systems is extremely complex (see RW Prouty's work on this). The mass airflow through the tail rotor also has an influence when airspeed is low. There's the shape of the fuselage to consider, articulation of the blades, texture of the gound, length of any grass; the direction and velocity of wind etc etc - it is impossibly difficult to model many different rotorcraft given the number of variables and so the problem has to be reduced and simplified. X-Plane gets better and better thanks to the inquisitve mind of its creator and his considerable skills. Bravo, I say! (I've been flying helicopters since 1988).

Except the kind of an explanation for the effect he came up with is worthy of a mid-schooler. Optimization an approximation is one thing, but before you do those you need to have a good grip on the underlying effect. He clearly doesn't. And yes, computational fluid dynamics is very complex. But at least some people are actually trying to bring it into real time simulations, unlike the others who just come up with ridiculous and simple as a brick ideas to describe aerodynamics just because they can't get their head around some actual calculations for it.

Xplane has been the most realistic flight sim for years. When I first tried it, all those tiny little motions that come from changing a power setting, adverse yaw, side slip etc, were just "wow" and that must have been 10+ years back now. Big thanks, from an xplane pilot!

Hello Austin! My gratitude to your work is always present! About the thermals (being a glider pilot myself), yes, the model is pretty much the best of what you can choose in order to more accurately simulate the lift gradient on one wing, from where the resultant lift differential occurs, but..., for the sensitive data (implemented default thermal dynamics constants, such as intensity gradient versus thermal radius) cannot be easily determined by mind. Something that you've done very right and also fun was when you tried to re-ensure that there is a "magic" 25% chord position of an airfoil where about the pitching moment remains nearly unchanged for a given amount of alpha range (you know, when you've done that test with a symmetrical shape body blown by the wind on top of your car for some entertaining validation purpose). Perhaps the same way, you should try to place some vertical speed measuring anemometers at different heights above ground (to have a sort of "field of values" also distributed in the vertical) where a small dust devil or any other form of thermal activities take place, thus have the "Ahaa...!" values that you'll need. Yes, that can turn a bit into scientific tests, but ain't it nice? It would be useful (for us, the aerospace engineers) to become an Adam Savage (from "Mythbusters") yourself ;). Besides the thermal dynamics simulation that you're about to implement, it's really a must if you're about to implement the other physical simulations as well! Really, I hope you'll never get tired of improving this for all of us...! One day, sooner or later, people will have a great gratitude! We have no other hope than you for this cause! Regards!

I'm a flight Instructor for helicopters and I've never heard of rotor bounce-back. In-ground effect comes from the coanda effect, taking away the downwash to the sides, thus reducing induced flow(aka rotor tip vortices) In running landings we keep ETL while getting into in-ground effect. If IGE was only working when slower than ETL, this maneuver wouldn't work. So I don't see wind bouncing back up when inground effect. (If that was a thing we would have higher pressure while hovering compared to when taking off. And with our pitot static system we can see changes in pressure. And neither the altimeter nor the VSI is showing a change in pressure.

You are right, ground effect is not due to air "bouncing back", otherwise it would not exist for airplanes either ! The ground (and really any other thing in subsonic aerodynamic) changes also the airflow IN FRONT the rotor/wing also... Austin also implies that stall is a consequence of separation when in fact they is no direct cause-to-effect relationship. For example many fighter aircraft get more lift not less from separated flows, not less.
@szut88
@szut88 5 жыл бұрын
Oh, from 17:12, Austin goes as far as "fixing" momentum theory on the basis of a pilot performance-based observation ! So now the physics of X-plane is becoming "military pilot XXX" physics. In a flight model tuning process pilots should tell what they fell or the main difference they observe but let engineers analyze the data and model to explain the difference. Never mistake a pilot "understanding" of a phenomenon with what the good old physics tells you...
@szut88
@szut88 5 жыл бұрын
Ok, so at 20:00 Austin admits that he derives this new momentum theory all by himself. Good luck then ! Actually many people have been trying to understand the physics behind helicopter flight before Austin (with some results), so perhaps it would be a good idea to grab a few book and read rather than create another empirical model from scratch ? I recommend those of Johnson, Prouty, Padfield or Bramwell for example...

My biggest wishes for upcoming and future flight models would be more realistic stall and especially spin characteristics and behavior (also aileron inversion at stall speed), and more realistic behavior of the airplanes in turbulence. Often it seems they bump around too quickly/jumpy and suddenly. I hope that you, Austin, will read this and will be able to implement these things at some time in the future! :)

I did a test flight with B3 tonight in VR, and decided to do some barnstorming in the F-4. Wow, the new stall mechanic is definitely noticeable. I tried to pull a sharp maneuver over the mountains and didn't watch my airspeed. The plane suddenly rolled left and I became a passenger. Unfortunately I was too low to recover, but hey, it's a sim and we can do these things from the safety of our computer chairs! Keep up the good work Austin and LR! It was a crazy sensation to have that sudden moment of panic knowing I had lost control of the aircraft.

I feel about the happiest man when I see "Austin at work" as he directly involves into more studying with the most important goal in mind, which from me, is his greatest role in life: making X-Plane's aerodynamics and flight dynamics physics less erroneous compared to reality! As an aerospace engineer, glider pilot and ex-aerodynamicist (calculated the test results from wind tunnel tests), I haven't seen anyone with a greater implication in this region alone then this man. It's like God knew who to choose for doing this simulator, so I truly appreciate him for that. Although, as I started watching the video with great interest, I've stopped a bit at around 7:07 for what seems to be, ehh..., probably a small confusion, but which I'm anyway certain that will be correctly implemented/worked in the X-Plane's equations code! Sorry and please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like you've made a confusion there between the vertical speed component reference and the resultant speed component reference when you've calculated the time it takes for the air particle to reach from the blade's height to the ground (Hh as you've named it). You've taken the Vw (that's the speed of the particle along it's path, not the vertical component) in the equation which is the hypotenuse component but using the vertical cathetus distance component, instead of the vertical component cathetus which should've logicall been used for that distance reference if you want to correctly determine the required time.

It almost seems as if you could now apply some machine learning to integrate some of these new effects into a more holistic model of the entire surface as a complete model. The ML could take data from actual sensors and integrate it into the X-plane model to trim these new effects against real world values. Now the question would be where to get this data to integrate and feed the ML system and build data from the new model. I hope I am making sense above. Also, voice simulation has come a long way from the stuttering audio offered currently.

Austin, could you do some real world flying with a GoPro so we can see how movement in the cockpit equates to a similar aircraft in XP11? Not all of us get to fly for real. Thnx.

Has there been any work to implement (VRS) Vortex ring state in Helicopter flight?
@CajunJosh
@CajunJosh 5 жыл бұрын
Ditto, all I fly in X-plane are helicopters. Xplane is a great sim but will the helicopters see some love? I know we are a smaller segment but I've noticed the obvious absence of VRS and it also seems like tail rotor authority or how the tail rotor is interacting with air is also much different than sims like DCS where there are much more varied tail rotor responses depending on the conditions.

Any chance for better ATC current phraseology his limited and doesn't match with current actual use as seen on steo and premier1drovers channel. and support for SIDS and Stars? (Yeah I am new and may not be up to datee but thanks for listening)
@beny874
@beny874 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with Xplane Phraseology with regards to IFR. But what exactly isnt current? The use of RNP, LNAV, BaroVNAV, etc type of approaches? Half the reason I'm thinking of getting into Xplane is to get some exposure on modern airliners since I'm not practically familiar with the modern air nav structure. I'd thought if payware aircraft like Aeroaofts stuff claims to model that stuff Xplane will also have to support it.

@@beny874 Take a look at stevo's videos and the way ATC is used there and you should be able to get an idea of improvments that could be made. I am primarily a solo player and don't yet feel comfortable using vatsim and have seen some of the sillyness that can happen there. Built in things like flight following would be nice as well as true vectors for people who want true VFR which can be difficult now.

Thernals influence doesn't depend on the surface of the wing segment? At great surface more thermal effect I thing, in gliders maybe not to mutch important because the surface of each segment mantains contants because the wing have the same surface in the tip or in the center but in airliners the tip of the wing have less surface than the center segment of the wing.

@@ammerudgrenda I think I'm not the best writring in english, my question is, the shape of the wing isn't contant, you have less surface in the tip of the wing than near the fusellage, the pressure can be the same

CFIs say that secondary stalls are worse or more dangerous than the first stall. Is there any physics supporting that or is it due to some kind of human or behavioral factors or is that just completely wrong.
@coreyballard8359
@coreyballard8359 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say it’s more dangerous. That being said, the reason some people may say this is because it will typically be a low altitude stall when encountered outside of practicing. Secondary stalls come from pulling a lot, stalling, realizing you still haven’t gotten enough outta the airplane to keep from hitting terrain/trees, then asking more of it, causing another stall.

I updated through the installer with the beta box checked and I believe it updated me to beta 3 because the stalls are much more pronounced and real although it stalls spins a little too much it seems to me. I was flying the 172. Larger and or high performance planes do snap stall.

@@DaugBiscuit Yeah I just read the part that says "So just get your installer from X-Plane.com if you have not already and and run it WITH THE BETA BOX CHECKED and you will get 11.40b1 which is the latest as of this writing." So it looks like you just download the installer and check off the beta box. I got X-Plane from steam, so there is no CD-Key, so I turned on BETA on steam but the link said it may take a day or so for the update to push to steam. I just ran a verify integrity check to try to force it to update. We'll see if it works
