I can’t lie I happily surprised he re signed. I thought for sure he’d wait it out and walk to UFA. He may still leave at 30 but you know what we got his best years, now it will just be a shame if we can’t put a good enough team around him

Top 3 NHL centre. Only 3 guys in the NHL last year had net positive penalties, over 50% on faceoffs, 70+ hits, 50+ takeaways, 40 blocks & over 80 pts. They were McDavid, Crosby & Matthews. Despite some alleged Leaf 'fans' claiming he's 'soft' because he doesn't chuck 'em, they are full of crap. In the 2 series against Tampa, over 13 games he has 9 goals, 18 pts, 51 hits, 17 blocks, 52 SOG & is a +4. Against Florida & the red hot 'Bob' he had just 2 pts, with 26 SOG, 3 posts, 2 crossbars, 19 hits, 11 blocks. NOT soft. Nylander had 1 hit, 0 blocks, 24 SOG. He was -4 for the playoffs. Soft. This contract is completely fair. No issues. He left $ on the table as opposed to what he would've got as a UFA (likely 15M aav) next year, so move on.

In early July I posted the following on my facebook page concerning Mathews. Auston Mathews average points per year over the past 4 years as a percent of total team points was 12.3% and his best season was 12.7%. But his salary as a percent of total team was 14.2%, so he underperformed his contract and we over paid him by $1.4 million a year roughly if he had earned 12.7% of team salary as per his production. If Mathews continues his 12.3% point production, his salary should be $11 million. If he improves his point production by 20% to say 14.7%, his salary should be $13.2 million. Any consideration of a salary more then this is suicide for the team because Mathews just hasn't shown that type of production to warrant $14 or $15 million a year. And paying him this amount will only magnify itself when Marner comes due the following year. So I think Treliving did a respectable job with this contract, unlike Dubas

After the 8 year commitment of Nylander, this deal looks better already. Long contracts rarely works out for the team and the player ends up creating regret and animosity towards the player when their performance inevitably declines. I hope he gets better and better with age so more earning power to him if that’s the case.

He didn’t give up anything regarding AAV, he got a full NMC all 4 years and we are paying him 95% of his pay as signing bonus which will be taxed more favourably. What exactly did Brad negotiate? I could do a better job as GM. Matthews was 22nd in scoring last year, and has broken 100 points just once in his 7 year career and somehow deserves to be paid as the highest paid player in the NHL…..has he ever taken this team and put it on his back in the playoffs? Has he ever gotten us past round two? At a time when players like Thachuk, McKinnon, Aho, Meier are all committing to teams for 8 years and taking a little less to build a winner AM is only about getting paid and playing on his terms and essentially putting this team in the same terrible position Dubas put us in in the first place. Shame on the Toronto media and fans for not calling this out and lambasting it for the terrible deal it is.

Their definitely not going to win the cup in the next couple of years, dont have the depth or the defense at the moment. Treliving has alot of work to do. But wed be even farther from the cup if we didnt have matthews.

Austin Mathews not demanding top dollar at least demonstrates commitment to the team and his teammates. It also allows the organisation some wiggle room to get some depth. Other top players on the Leaf's bench, take note. The Avalanche used this as a strategy two seasons ago. Not demanding top dollar, gives salary cap room to acquire and develop talent, so when you get closer to the Cup, you have some depth that can be called up .

4 years is perfect. It keeps his AAV lower than a longer contract, and let's both sides evaluate. He'll be in his 30s, breaking records, and at that point nobody would blame him for wanting a change. Looking forward to 5 more years of skill

Hockey people are strange. They all say "He's paid too much" but then also complain that the top NHL players aren't making enough.

Unlike Gudas and O'Reilly (who have both recently publicly spoken to not wanting to play in Toronto due to the limelight), Matthews definitely revels in it. Here is a guy who knows that by signing this contract he's going to be a Legend in Leafs Nations for the rest of his life. He doesn't want obscurity, he wants glory. Matthews is already creeping up on the All-Time Leafs Scorers and will easily be at the top of the list by the time the four years is up. All the power to him for it.
