Excellent video. I've been watching Railroad Australia so a lot of these locomotives and railroads are at least somewhat familiar now. Just watched a little spot about Bernie Baker and the SSR B61.

Once again, fantastic job. Actually was even going to suggest a scenerio where the fellas were out camping by a fire looking up at clear stars of the night sky and train spotting by the shimmery heat of the day...looks like you beat me to the punch.

IF that was all of the old loco's at the Broken Hill depot then they had a huge cleanout over the years. 8 x 80 class and a few 48s all ready to scrap in march 2014. Great video compilation.

Do the double stack trains run through to Melbourne, I'm planning to catch 2PM9 an SCT intermodal train north of Geelong at the end of this month when we are over in Melbourne. And in the afternoon on the same day a crossing at Gheringhap Loop hopefully. Here's hoping timekeeping matches the MTP. Hi from NZ, Anthony

Question regarding the Whyalla footage. I used to work out of one steel back in the mid 2000's and the ore trains at the time only ran between what was one steel and Iron Duke. The line went out of Whyalla towards Iron Knob then branched off out near the South middleback ranges then out to the Duke. At the time the line just past the middle back ranges turnoff had been ripped up on the line headding towards iron knob for a few hundred meters before the remaining line took you to the mine. Now has that line been repaired and placed back into service for Knob traffic or is it still ripped up?
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER 8 ай бұрын
That's a good question I'm not 100% sure but the line defs still runs to iron knob, but I'd have to find out.

@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER i know when i left whyalla around 2007, there was talks of a tender going out to get the line repaired and back into service out to Iron Knob as one steel was re opening Iron Barron as well which i believe has been serviced by rail now for a number of years. I guess if any GWA or One Rail employees that worked that line would more than likely know.

@@higgo1978 yeah interesting, appararently there is a junction but yeah the iron knob line still runs to the mine along side the highway most of the way, once we knew it hadleft Whyalla, we met it head on, he ace the first shot being late notice, then the rest I got set up better.

Adam, every time you video the result is a very high quality production. You know how to create interest in videos. Even though I've since been overseas including recently, who could forget your amazing effort at Piangil, a symphony of the steel rail (or 'throughway' as the then govt-owned Victorian Railways once loved to call it). Not just the evocative 'fireside' scene with the Darwin-bound Aurizon intermodal, but earlier around 4;30 showing the ute ('truck' to Americans) moving gave the train wagons scale. At 13:43 you said it was 'Belair': the next sequence was, but 13:43 looked more like Monarto Sth or Callington i.e. desert-like country with few trees and shrubs. I am no expert but my only slight criticism would be overuse of telephoto-like sequences. However these show the size of the train. For me, it's harder to see what company's containers are being carried. As a shareholder in Lindsay Transport Australia (not to be confused with unlisted, privately owned Linfox), that's something I like to take note of.

Good feedback, obviously the hot desert heat waves change things but also give a scale of the heat and the wind out there. I feel wide angles don't quite give the sheer size and credit the trains have out there. Yes it sure was Callington. The issue going with photographers is they have specificications to get their typical 3/4 shots. I prefer to do things a little differently but often set up time when chasing a train limits the shot I can get. Not to mention the a Mount I had to edit out due to mates talking shit in the background. Haha. What I'd like to do and what I can do often differ somewhat.

What is the passenger car used for at 7:49?
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER 8 ай бұрын
They are crew cars, when travelling across the desert or remote locations there's no accommodation so 2 crews changeover along way way.

Glad you had a good trip. Must admit the horns on the nr’s and gt46caces are very bad, don’t know why some drivers like to give point blank toots. Very unnecessary

What are the passenger cars behind the locomotives for?
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER

Due to the isolation of desert locations crews rest in the carriage behind the locomotives.

I was the driver of train 6AD1 from 7.30 to 8.30 in the video. The cars behind the In Line Fuel wagon are for resting crews to rest in. We take our relief crews with us, as it's not practical to have depots out in the isolation to change crews with. It's called relay working, and the 'passenger car' is a Relay Van, the resting crews rest in. As said, we, and SCT work in 8 hour rotations between driving, and then resting. PN have a slightly different system for relay working, and also a facility to fuel locomotives at Cook, so they generally don't use an In Line Fuel wagon. The Ralay Van's have at least five bedrooms, all with reverse cycle airconditioning, a bathroom, a toilet, living area with kitchen, stove, fridge, freezer and dining table. During our 8 hours off in the van, we have a meal, some drivers cook something up, some bring frozen tv dinners and just reheat. Have a shower, and also sleep before getting ourselves up for the next shift. For each of the SCT and Aurizon trains, the drivers are away from their home depots for about 4.5 days. When the train gets to Perth in the case of SCT, or Darwin for Aurizon, we have at least 12 hours off in a motel before booking on again to return the train home. For the PN trains, they only do relay working between Port Augusta and Cook, then depot working from Cook to Perth. Aurizon also run trains to Perth, with relay working between Port Augusta and Parkeston (Kalgoorlie), then depot working between Parkeston and Perth. At each 8 hour mark when crews are changed, the train stops, everyone gets out on the ground and the off going drivers give a hand over to the oncoming drivers, the Train Authority in effect, it's limits, anything else that they should know. 5-10 minutes is allowed, and so long as the train still has a Proceed Authority, the train continues to progress. SCT and Aurizon train carry their own diesel, two ISO TT's filled with about 24m3 of diesel each ensures the locomotives don't need filling from an external supply enroute. The system operates automatically, although on some of the older loco's that don't have FIRE or DIDs screens, we still have a look at the gauge on the side of the tank when we change crews.
