Miss hearing these go through Maitland on their way out to Pelton to pick up coal; definitely one of the better sounding locomotives around

Good fuckin locos those GT46's. Drove V544 a few times on MA's. Although I hate the Microwave Engine sounds I prefer a UGL Cab over these.

I worked in KEN box about a decade ago. That grain train used to cause sooo many issues if it was late and came at the beginning of peak!

Quieter than I expected, the in-cab noise. Our equivalent in the UK, the EMD-engined Class 66, have had a reputation for insufficient noise insulation to the driver
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER21 күн бұрын
We have some bad locomotives the BRM locos are brutally loud! These aren't bad in comparison.

I rode on the goods from Culcairn to Corowa in 1984 with 4814, I was delighted to find the times that I logged and the loco number in an old map. The 40th anniversary was coming up so in January 2024 I toured NSW in my car and visited the places I visited in 1984. I was delighted to discover 4814 in the Junee Roundhouse and got a couple of photos. The other line I travelled on was The Rock to Urana, the guard had to deliver something to Milbrulong and he’d never heard of it. I saw his running sheet, scribbled on “Type of Train” was “Wheaty”.

Very interesting! Like hearing good old stories!
@darylcheshire161822 күн бұрын
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER In 1984 just before I went to Urana, I stayed overnight at Junee in the hotel type rooms upstairs when it was possible to do so. Someone came to wake me as part of the service in time to catch the “Wheaty” parked in the yard. Pity they closed the line to Oaklands, at the end of Urana there was a baulk or sleeper and there was a standard stop sign mounted on the sleeper. I think a similar arrangement in accommodation existed at Werris Creek.

How comes you push and not pull?
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER22 күн бұрын
Other end was pulling I was pushing.
@wizrox22 күн бұрын
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER OK, dumb question, but I thought that in push-pull congig, you control the pushing locomotive automatically from the pulling one?
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER22 күн бұрын
@wizrox not in this case, we have a driver at each end and we communicate by radio, as we don't want one powering while the other is trying to stop or vice versa.
@wizrox22 күн бұрын
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER ok, that would be my next question :D thx for the info, I didn't know that this was a thing (based on the problem of syncing the two drivers). Final question is then who controls the brakes of the train cars? I can easily picture a scenario when if you missunderstood each one, serious damage to wheels and brakes of one of the locos could happed. Sorry to bother you btw
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER22 күн бұрын
@wizrox no it's fine 😊 The leading locomotive has control of the brake so watching the gauges on the rear locomotive will tell us what the leading driver is doing also, but radio communication is the key to doing it safely and not damaging the equipment. It takes some exposure and experience to get it right.

Good catch Sir! DOn't you love the old horns, that you could "play" by how much you pull the rope or lever....now everything is a bloody button thats on or off! The modern world is just not fun anymore?? At least these old girls are still out there making us smile. Gregg 🙂

Nice vid. Always found it interesting that the railway companies in Victoria opted to use RVBs for so long, they’re awful horns (which is partly why I’m excited to be getting one soon! Lol). Maybe the local manufacturing made them a more attractive option to the much superior wabcos?
@buzzytrains903727 күн бұрын
Think we can get an S3K or RS3K on a P? that'd be a special sight for sure It's nice to see some actual horn on the Ps anyways regardless.

We need an hour long video of the exhaust sound of these! I remember loving these when I was little but now since I have gotten into the hobby of trains I am die hard for these things! Hmmmm if SSR fully buys these from V/Line soon they should remove the muffler which will make these sound even better.
