A big “Thank you!” for the great resource Project 200 is for LC 200 owners!! I just followed this video and changed my transmission fluid. And I’m glad I did it myself! I had my car serviced by an “auto specialist” in central Victoria, and by the time I got to central Queensland it was spewing AT fluid everywhere. It was “repaired” by a Toyota dealer, but after about 250kms it was leaking again! It turns out the pan had been distorted on removal. A new pan, $1,000 and an extra 1,000kms of driving later I was on the road again. (I was refunded the $450 I paid for the faulty service, btw, but not the rest of my costs.) Then I followed your procedure, but when draining the AT fluid, only 1.6L came out, not the approx. 3.1L I expected, as in the video. It turned out the level was 1.6L short. So much for the experts! So now that I’ve changed it myself, I KNOW it’s been done properly. Many thanks for this great website! I use it do almost all the servicing myself.

**Warning** Just letting people know that if you have a standard exhaust (I have a 2011 Pre-DPF 200 series) and medium size hands you find it fairly difficult to get the drain hose onto the transmission line as you can't get your hand over the exhaust like Mark can in this video. Also there is next to no room beside the transmission either so I had to get very ingenious to slip it on. I used a thin rope to put a choke/slip knot about 20mm from the end of the hose, heated up the end of the hose in hot water and then used the rope to pull down on the drain hose while using my fingertips to guide it over the transmission line. Other than that this is a very good guide on how to flush the transmission. I did one extra flush and the fluid was looking great. I don't understand how Toyota can say that the ATF will last the life of the vehicle but I'm sure all vehicles will be well out of warranty by the time old ATF will do damage.

Hello from America. I have to say this is the best tutorial I have saw yet on how to preform the fluid check procedure.(been researching for well over 12hrs) The recommendation on disconnecting the return line to preform a manual flush puts the quality of this video tutorial in a class of it's own. This is far better than any of the Tundra/Sequoia tutorials, which share the same transmission, where people are pretty much saying to just drain it and measure how much comes out. That of course does you no good if you were hoping to do a flush like you demonstrated. Thanks again and best wishes.

Thank you so much. This is really a great detailed video that will help a lot. In my country, the dealer change the ATF after 80,000 km for the first time. Then they change it every 40,000 km. Each time they uninstall the pan and change the filter.

Super detail and well researched video, great stuff this is on my list in the not too distant future but I was always hesitant as Toyota DONT appear to want it to be done obviously due to contamination of fluids. Thanks for the solid advise

Thankyou for taking the trouble to video the underside of the vehicle, especially the bit where the top hose was removed. Very helpful indeed. The only part that I disagreed with was the use of aftermarket fluid. I chose to stick with Toyota genuine WS fluid (Made in Japan), which is available from the dealer, and the price is not excessive compared to aftermarket brands.

Thanks for the detailed video mate. You've inspired me to give this a crack myself. A few things I've noted as I've gone along: I've got the 5-speed (A750F) in my petrol 200 series which according to certain resources holds 11.4 litres of tranny fluid. The 6-speed AB60F in this video hold 13.5 litres which validates what you say about not replacing all the fluid with this service. 11.4 litres is less than 12 though so for us with the 5-speed it's a different story. In the 5-speed 1.7 litres is held in the pan, 4.3 in the valve body and 5.4 in the torque converter (9.7 VB+TC). Given that I worked out the following drain sequence: 1.7 (first pan) 1.66 (first return line) 1.66 (2nd) 1.66 1.66 1.66 2.0 (second and final pan) For a total of 12 litres. The figures can be adjusted based on how much actually comes out of the pan during the initial flush. Temperature range for 5-speed is 38-46 degrees C. Lastly, I started by getting the tranny up to temp and checking the level. If the previous bloke overfilled it it's best not to use that as a starting point.

Nice video but I feel you should also change the transmission fluid filter if going to this extent.

After lines cleared, need to remove the pan and change the internal strainer. Magnet captures iron but tiny brass shards need removal. I have seen sludge too, this blocked a Toyota U241 strainer.

Good video, but why not remove the pan, clean it out, replace filter and check wires and plugs on the solenoids, replace rubber gasket on the pan, refit and then continue with your procedure. Just a suggestion 👍🏽

I have a 2007 v8 turbo diesel vdj200r can i still replace my fluids with the ones u have recommended even though my model car is a lot earlier than the one u are servicing ? Thank you so much for the video. Question: I have a 2011 VXR Automatic with 390,000KM on it. I wanted to replace the transmission fluid, as it has never been replaced. Lately I replaced the oil cooler with a new one and my trans for some reason keeps getting hot, so thought of changing the fluid.The local dealer keeps saying the transmission may break if fluid is replaced at this stage as the car has 390,000KM. Is this true? Will changing trans fluid break my transmission??

Hi Jamie I followed your procedure drained my transmission fluid on my 2014 200 series vdj200. Never had fluid change since new. The fluid came out was 6.5 liters I had 2 x measuring jugs. Tried to put back the same amount came out but it started overflowing from fill plug but I had the fill plug out to let the air in to drain (plumber's way of thinking) and another thing I haven't driven it for about a month, parked up in my garage nice and level. Then I followed all your procedures to bring it up to temperature and check the fluid level. I am bit confused why when you drained your transmission fluid only 3.5 litres came out and I drained 6.5 liters ? Please advice I am scared to take it out for a drive . I used Toyota genuine WS fluid which was PITA to get thru Toyota NZ.

Just wondering if you could use the pump to push fluid through the cooler with new fluid rather than running g the vehicle?

If the dealer says they'll do a flush with a Wynn's transmission flush machine, would you avoid that and have them just do a drain and fill? It's my understanding that they won't be able to get all the fluid out this way. I have a 2013 LX570 with 249,000 km.

Rather wrong approach to replace fluid - because you have to replace the filter as well, which is covered by oil pan - so in order to do that you need to remove the pan itself. And after you have filter removed you got to pump fluid throughout​ the transmission without starting an engine at a constant pressure. Filter needs to be replaced because of grit going from friction pads, and tiny metal particles that are coming from various parts of transmission mechanism. If you don't change the filter it might be completely clogged eventually which could cause a lots of problems and leads you to a hefty repair bill. And of course lifetime long transmission fluid is a complete joke. And be careful while choose fluids to replace stock one with. Look closely to vehicle list proven by manufacturer and especially regional specialities or consult with your local representative of a brand chosen.

This would be a good video if you owned a 200 but I am glad I don't. How ridiculous is it for Toyota to say that you don't need to change auto oil. As you have shown the oil does become contaminated. It is similar to stating that the engine oil is good for 15 to 20,000 km. This type of rubbish is only good if the owner is keeping the vehicle short term. Typical throw away society. This process that you need to follow is also ridiculous. Imagine how much this would cost if mr Toyota had it as a service requirement. I believe the 200s are the most expensive 4wd to maintain as it is. As a 4wder and an outback traveler I can not imagine doing this somewhere off the beaten track like I have done with my reborn 80 1HDT. The new technology diesel vehicles are no longer worth buying if you can avoid doing so. With all the new diesel vehicles having so many problems with the DPFs, oil burning and blown engine and turbos I no longer believe a diesel 4wd is an option. Having said all this negative stuff, good video. I 1st subscribed when I was considering a replacement 4wd but my research told me not to. Thank you for all your info over time.

My 200 has been parked, I have ended up taking 8L out of the pan in 1 go. Do I fill the whole 8L up at the fill point?
