killerfrenchy Mae is my favorite thing right now. Now so much because she is pleasant for the eyes, allthough she is. But despite emulating a mute in these videos, she just seems to glow with an inner light. And seems to be just on the verge of laughing at a joke that she only knows. Very charming lady.

Not only delicate, but flexible too: a switch-hitter, I just noticed in this vid! You were firing the RuG revolver righty, but went lefty for the Mannlicher 1905. Is there a backstory, or did you cross it up because the relief target switched sides? [I always like to bat righty vs. a right-handed pitcher, and lefty for left, but that's baso-barru [ie: time to goof-off] not shootin' [ie, time to get down to some serious *FUN*!] ;-) Love C&Rsenal: you & Othias make a great team, bringing these old guns back to life!

I don't have a Rast & Gasser but DO have a 1907 Roth (Krnka) Steyr and a 1912 Steyr and agree- that must be a commision weapon. the Austro Hungarians made some of the most interesting weapons and that level of innovation is sore needed today

I sprayed my familly Hahn 1912 as well a couple of times already , it just happens when you are used to modern pistols. I absolutely love the 1912 its a really nice shooter and passed on from father to son since it was issued to my great grandfather in WW1 and saw action on the eastern as well as on the italian front. It still works perfectly . Once a year i take it out to the range and shoot about 10 rounds through it, people on the range are amazed everytime they see it .

WOW, I'm learning so much from these collaborative videos. I'm a history fan with a minor interest in the weapons (most of recorded history is about conflict, so a history fan becomes a "military history" fan kind of by accident b/c that's what historians talk about) and I had no idea about stripper-fed pistols! I now have a new appreciation for the 1911 being box-magazine semi-auto .45...instead of some lame 8mm gate-fed revolver. Just, all these little details that get totally glossed-over, but for a soldier, makes all the difference. Even just playing the Far Cry series of games different guns make a big difference--now thinking about real-world WWI and it is a bit terrifying. "How do our guns stack up against theirs??"

I love to see collaboration between historians-and any others engaged in useful endeavors, especially where the free and open dissemination of educational materials is concerned. And of art and artistry, of course, for that is my area of personal expertise. Great work, Indie and the Great War team. And I laughed along with you when Othais discovered how to set the cartridges free of their durance vile . . . and, like other fans of their channel, we know what weapons Mae likes best by the candlepower of her smile . . . WHILE firing, not after.

It seems to me that there's some advantages to using stripper clips instead of magazines in a pistol, particularly for cavalry. The stripper clip might be a little slower, depending on how much force it takes to shove the cartridges down, but with magazines you either have to carry a large number of preloaded magazines or stop to reload the empties. And you have to save the empty magazines, which takes time. The empty stripper clip you just toss. There's a practical limit to how many rounds a stripper clip can hold, but at the time there were no high capacity magazines. And the Mannlicher and Roth Steyr really look cool (to me at least).

Hey Indy and team. I have a question, perhaps you can talk about it on out of the trenches? You've touched on Pals before; battalions made up of men from the same village, town or industry. The mention of industry reminded me of a something I heard about Pals and artillery shells. I heard a disproportionate number of artillery shell factory workers signed up for the Pals Battalions and when they took heavy losses that lead to a shortage of qualified shell manufacturers. I understood this to mean unqualified worker replaced them in the factories and produced shells of a lower quality. Is this one of the contributing factors in the large amount of unexploded munitions along the western front today? Vielen Dank für eure tolle Arbeit für die Show!

Enjoyed the video, and find the small arms shows interesting. I was wondering however if you are going to do anything to show the artillery that had such a huge effect on the battlefield. I'm a field artillery officer, and Fort Sill has a ton of WWI artillery. The most interesting thing is that unlike small arms, the basics of artillery have changed little since WWI. We still use cordite to launch high explosive rounds with predicted fire tables for targeting.

Hey Indy and Co. I love the show! I have a question for “Out of the Trenches.” In WW2 in Britain due to rationing there was a black-market for goods and luxury items for sale. How was crime affected during WW1? Was there a black market for civilians and /or soldiers (at the fronts) during the Great War for goods, stealing, corrupt officers selling weapons, ammunition, bribes, etc? This channel is truly interesting and engaging. Looking forward to more episodes in the future from you guys, keep up the good work.

What most ppl dont get about the history of guns, is they are EVERYTHING. Mass production, guns. Quality control and fine engineering tolerances, guns. Metalurgy, be it steel and later alloys, guns, or planes. Guns and war, destruction, breeds innovation and often the only way R&D was invested in.

The amazing thing is that a lot of these weapons were chosen for Cavillry useage, whereas as we know that the Tank was taking over, so a lot of these pistols just disappear, as not many people know about them . Hense why by WW2 there are more nationalised weaponry as we all know about WW2 weapons because we recognise them with the nation they served with.

The better handguns over the era were usually built for cavalry. The private purchase market focused on concealment and lots were sold on various "features" like you would see in products today. Many over hyped and unreliable. Soldiers weren't expected to have handguns as rifles were inherently better. Officers weren't meant to fight directly but to lead troops. Cavalry, however, might need to fight from the saddle and their single-handed pistols needed to be powerful. Cavalry concerns drove most of the better designs of the day.

Thank you for this video. Although I subscribe to a couple of gun channels I am a novice and do not really understand term like single action, double action, blowback etc... Anyone knows of a gun 101 video.channel ? You do specials on uniforms and firearms, I would very much like to see similar special about other world war 1 equipment, particularly field telephones and radios.

Amongst his other stuff, I do believe Hickock45 has some firearms basics, along with plenty of safety talk. You should check him out if you're interested in starting with firearms. I'd also recommend Nutnfancy, although he does more talk about the philosophy and purpose behind guns and how you should generally think about what you want out of a gun before getting it, he's a great channel nonetheless.
