The Austronesian languages are a language family widely spoken throughout Maritime Southeast Asia, Madagascar, the islands of the Pacific Ocean and Taiwan (by Taiwanese indigenous peoples). There are also a number of speakers in continental Asia. They are spoken by about 386 million people (4.9% of the world population). This makes it the fifth-largest language family by number of speakers. Major Austronesian languages include Malay (around 250-270 million in Indonesia alone in its own literary standard named "Indonesian"), Javanese, Sundanese, and Tagalog (Filipino). According to some estimates, the family contains 1,257 languages, which is the second most of any language family.

"tiga" in Indonesian came from Pali "tiga", from Sanskrit "trika", replacing the native "təlu", because of...prestige reasons...the same thing that replaced English "twoth" with "second".

Disagree. The reason they replaced Tolu with Tiga was because Telu sounds very similar to Telur(Egg). They did it to avoid confusion.

@@dangerousvillain7278 If you look at Kedukan Bukit inscription, which uses Old Malay, not Javanese, it uses the word "telu" "tlu ratus sapulu dua vañakña dātaṃ di mukha upaṃ"

I'm malagasy. In malagasy language the number ONE (1) means ISA and IRAY also. FIVE, 5 means DIMY and LIMY also in malagasy antandroy dialect that the letter D change to L. thanks

Yes. But somehow "iray" (and its cognates: iraika, araiky...) is commonly used when we count things. 🤔 "isa" often goes alone. 😅

actually there's 2 race who live in south east asian. 1) Austronesian who move to east from middle east, they go to south east Asia unlike Austroasiatic who go to far east 2) Malayo-Polynesian who move to east from Africa, they go using ocean route and spread across Polynesia and landed on Hawaii so for people who said Austronesian is from south china and Taiwan is not 100% correct. it just one of the tribe live there. you can read thesis from steppen Oppenheimer who wrote Eden in the east. he popularize Sundaland which is large continent that combining Malaysia, Indonesia and south china sea as a massive land. he also have geographical record about ocean water use to have lower than today around 20 thousand years ago. because of flood, the Austronesian moving to higher land and it became island, some of this people also move to other land

@@boboboy8189 Melanesians are not Austronesians. Austronesians came from Taiwan/South China and spread Southward, period. Polynesians and Micronesians are just subsets of Austronesians, just like the Malays (Malayo-Polynesian). Melanesians were the earlier settlers are most likely from Continental SE Asia that moved eastward when the land bridges still existed. They most likely were related to the ancestors of the Dravidians and Sentinelese.

i think amis and filipino is much more similar to javanese (indonesian local languange) rather than indonesian itself. for example, 7 in amis is pitu, in filipino is pito. and in indonesian, it's tujuh while in javanese it's pitu. same with 8, in amis and filipino, it's walu/walo while in Javanese it's wolu.

I just found out that Amis came from Taiwan and noticed the news last time I watched here on YT that they look like us Filipinos. Then I learned here today that they're also "austronesians".

Indonesian and Hawaiian are always different while Amis, Filipino, and Malagasy always have an obvious cognate.

That's because Indonesian loaned so much words. In the first part of prayer every word except kami (pronoun), yang (function word), ada, datang, atas, dalam (basic word), and di (preposition) is a loanword. Kehendak and seperti is probably also native

'Lani' in Hawaiian is cognate to 'langit' in Indonesian which means 'sky' or 'heaven'. 'Surga' is a Sanskrit loanword and the meaning is more like 'the garden of Eden'.

The word "langit" in Malay and Indonesian then becomes the word for "sky" and "the heavens" (as in out in the expanse). Meanwhile, the langit-langit means the ceiling (traditonal word; modern Malaysians use the loanword), covering above the bed (like a mosquito net; word fell out of favor in common use), and roof of the mouth. The word "surga" or "shurga" did come from Sanskrit due to a very strong Hindu influence in the region. The word "neraka" did also came from Sanskrit to refer to Hell. These words are still used to refer to concept of heaven/paradise and hell after Islamization (which also introduced many Arabic and Farsi loanwords due to trade with the Middle East)

Based on my own research and understanding, the old (if I may prefer to call it) Filipino term for "ten" is "pulo". Being a language is so dynamic, this has probably changed through time: isang pulo --> isam pulo --> sampulo --> sampu.

It became sampuwo first before turning to sampu. In Spanish era dictionaries, sampu was often written as "sampouo".

@@playplayofficial3480 no they don't have Papuan influences, Phillipinese are name of languages family not same with Filipino / tagalog, even the Yami Language ins Southern Taiwan Are belong to Philippines branch too but these languages are more related than u compared your languages to Malay & Javanese which not part of Philippines family

I get the Austronesian ancestry and migration whatsoever but I swear these austronesian languages dont feel like they're in the same family 🤣 perhaps the similarities aren't as well established as that of Indo-european.

Well, the difference between Sanskrit and Latin’s grammar structure is huge too, but they do belong in the Indo European language family. Malay and Filipino (standardised Tagalog) are as divergent as English and German for instance.

@@tiramisu7544 wouldn't the Austronesian language family be comparable to Latin? Some are closer than others they all evolved differently from each other, like how when it comes to words Indonesia and Malaysia have a lot of proto Austronesian words but some altered like how Tagalog uses Spanish words for different meanings, and how the Filipino language retained the complex VSO grammar of Proto Austronesian. And comparing Latin to Sanskrit is like comparing Austronesian to Austroasiatic and Sinitic, all of them emerged from mainland southern China and went on for there.

@@gamechanger8908 better to think of the austronesian languages as similar in diversity to the entire indo-european language group instead of similar in diversity to one specific group of IE languages (like germanic, latinate, celtic, indo-iranian etc) because of all the sound shifts and all the branches of Formosan and Malayo Polynesian since Tagalog and Malay are Malayo-Polynesian languages i used the english-german comparison

I can see this happening to some of the words from Filipino to Indonesian you end up changing the vowel and ending on some of them Api Indonesian Filipino Apoy rule is this it's that if the Indonesian has an I ending turn it into an -oy ending in Filipino then O ending in Indonesian ends up being a u ending in Filipino.

I think the other languages of the Philippines are even closer to the other Austronesian languages than Tagalog is. I hear more of the language from the Pampanga region sounding more similar to the other Austronesian ones. It's possible that the other northern languages of the Philippines would sound even closer but I wouldn't know because all the Filipino languages are quite distinct that one wouldn't be able to understand the other from the next province.

You can notice that they really descended from one common language family from the cognates, grammatical structure and phonological arrangements and similarities in there sentences. Its one of the most obvious language families.

We use langit as well here(in Indonesia) but as sky. For heaven one is Surga. We probably think that heaven is in the sky

@@blanc6519 Surga is probably from Sanskrit svarga? The first syllable means sun, and the second syllable means going towards. The sun part is cognates with sun, and sol.

Fun fact, javanese (one of majority tribes in Indonesia) is also saying "Wolu" for eight. Counting 1-10 in javanese: 1 = siji 2 = loro 3 = telu 4 = papat 5 = limo 6 = enem / genep 7 = pitu 8 = wolu 9 = songo 10 = sepuluh / sedoso

Those are just shorthand. Ng is pronounced "nang". Mga is pronounced as "manga".

Think of "Ang" as the Filipino translation of the English "The". Mga(read as "Manga") is a plural indicator. Put it before the noun to make it plural. Ng (read as "Nang") just think of it as "of" Example: Republic of Indonesia Republika ng Indonesia (I was gonna use The Philippines but this is a bad example because if we translate it word-by-word, it would be like; Republika "ng Ang" Pilipinas (You can't find "Ang" and "Ng" following each other so when you encounter this, just retain the first and crash out the second word)

I am very interested in studying a bachelor degree related to languages, but I don't know what the proper term for such degree would be, as for searching "Language Degree" I rarely get useful results... lol, Philippines has other major tribal groups & languages, like Tagalog, Ilocano, Cebuano, Bisaya, Hiligaynon-Ilonggo, Bicolano, Waray, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Maguindanao, Maranao, Tausug and more. Filipino language is mostly based on Tagalog. But in Visayas & Mindanao, the variants for number wordings in: 1- usa, 2- duha,duwa,dua, 3- tulo, 4- upat, 6- unom, 10- sapulu,hangpu.

I'm uncertain about Japanese, but the Amis speakers reside in Taiwan. Consequently, the speaker likely speaks Chinese, and their accent has influenced the language. Alternatively, the language might have been influenced by the long-standing presence of the Chinese language in the region. This is due to the fact that the Chinese population on the island constitutes approximately 95% of the total populace, while the remaining 5% are indigenous to the Austronesians' original homeland. Preceding this, it’s believed the Austronesians originally came from modern day southern China and northern Vietnam

@@gyeongdongmin3781 it has nothing to do with the Chola empire. The Cholas brought nothing but destruction and colonization like the Europeans here, especially to the Srivijaya Empire. Because of them, they weakened the Buddhist/Hindu influence in the region and gave rise for Islam. the Hindu/Indian influence of the Malay Archipelago goes far from the founding of the Chola empire.

@@gyeongdongmin3781 Chola is colonizer, no significant influences adopted by the native Indonesians, the Sanskrit history predates the existance of Chola, for instance the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali itself mentioned in _Ramayana_ which dates back to 700 BC era

@@lyd4712 Yes, Chola has not much to do with Sanskrit in Southeast Asia, but it also has loaned word from Tamil like kedai, Topi, Keldai etc.
