I had issues grasping 332 cubic feet until I saw how deep that water is. I've just recently learned how much energy you can get from water and it gave me a lot of interest for it.

I wish all dams had those bars. Dams scare me. The amount of water and pressure. I don't even get remotely close to them on my boat. Being sucked in is a BAD thought. With bars like that you at least stand a slight chance of climbing up to the surface until somebody can help.

I was part of commissioning some large gas turbines, 480MW took 1735 pounds of air and 43 pounds of fuel (natural gas) per second dry, 800ft above sea level. Water injection would boost output as volume out was much greater than volume in. At times it would be over 2000 pounds per second and a lot less fuel

Reminds me of having to clean the intake grates on the macerator at the hospital when I first started, you would not believe what can go through a hospital's septic system. Thankfully I got my stationary license and glance at a computer screen every so often while watching YT videos on hydroelectric plants now, lol.

Things that would get you in trouble with us. 1. No life jacket on. Does not matter if you can swim or not, with that flow, it would suck you against the needle rack. And hold you there. 2. No safety fence so the life jacket requirement. If a safety fence then not required. 3. Do not see a life ring. Your water flow was what one of our pumps moved and we had 3. Our needle racks went down 26 feet. We had fiberglass rake handles on 20' potato rakes for manual work near the top and an electric rake for going deep. Spend most of a shift on the needle rack cleaning and you went home tired. We at times had to call in one of our cranes with a clam shell bucket to keep up.The worst thing to find just before shift change or on a Monday morning after a weekend shut down, a body against the needle rack. Your day will be shot as you can not leave till the police say it is okay. Nor can you move any water during that time.

To me it would make more sense to have a bypass behind the gates that could shunt all intake around the turbines to a bypass spillway. Then you would just activate the bypass, raise the gates, and open the spillway to flush out accumulated debris.

Do the grates reduce efficiency due to turbulence as they would with a jet engine turbine if they had screens in front of them? or does that amount of water just not care?
@patricksworkshop6010
@patricksworkshop6010 3 жыл бұрын
Air is compressible and water is not, turbulence is less of an issue as water is constantly pushed by whats behind it forward, air is a bit different
@gravelydon7072
@gravelydon7072 3 жыл бұрын
Only if the needle rack is clogged. I have seen ours have a difference of a foot in height between in front or behind and your turbine in this case will not make as much power or in our case, our pumps had to work harder. If they are clean, they don't affect the water flow much as they are designed into the system.
