Our thoughts on ABA therapy for asd and why you should not conclude that it is all bad. We went to a Chuck E Cheese's birthday party and were surprised! Check out your local Chuck E Cheese's, they now offer sensory friendly Sunday's once a month. #autism

Hey new subscriber here! 🙋🏻‍♀️ Loved seeing your perspective on Aba therapy, but I am still conflicted in my views because although there seems to be benefits from aba, I know many autistics that have been through aba themselves are now grown adults and are against it. So it does beg the question on whether aba is always okay. I do believe you get good therapists that will do their job properly, and put the child’s needs first, but there will always be some that do more damage than good. When I do anything to benefit my son, who is autistic, I always get advice from autistic adults because they are able to tell me first hand experiences ect Good video tho ☺️

Autistic adults also have the knowledge and insight as to how it continues to affect them decades later. There's a reason why so many are against it.

Hi sweet Wee family. I have a son with Asd who is 6,5 years old now. His developmental delay in social/emotional fields is about 3 years, but he's a very smart kid. Didn't start talking until he was 4 years old (and he started off only speaking english, eventhough we live in the netherlands :)) , and thats also what i wanted to say to you guys today about this video. Don't look at the goals Braylee is supposed to hit at a certain age, our children develop so much different and at their own pace. The ABA therapy is a great way of helping her with her development I think, and my son being in a center where they understand and can connect with children like him has been fantastic for us. Keep celebrating the small victories like you are, and she will live her best life I'm sure of it! You guys are doing great!!! Love from the Netherlands. Ps, my son Maarten Loves music as well. Sorry for the long post and my possibly confusing english.

Another awesome video!! That is awesome to hear and get to see how ABA has helped Braylee! I love that I get to work on those types of skills with my students every day! You’re so right, it really is about helping them gain more independence from teaching them self care and helping them with receptive communication! I think that video really helps show people who don’t know anything about ABA some great examples of how it can be so helpful for kiddos!

Brilliant ABA vlog, it frustrates me when people say all ABA is bad. And behaviour modification is ABA. If you go to work... And do a good job... You get paid. That is positive reinforcement for doing something someone wanted you to do. It is very evident that ABA works, and I am so happy you have found a good one so early for Braylee, she will definitely have a great life. Xxx 💜 ❤️ 💜 ❤️

I agree, from what I've heard from autistic adults, that some forms of ABA are not good. But my daughter's ABA therapy is great. I was told by an autistic adult that if her ABA therapy is great,then it's not true ABA therapy. Idk. Obviously Braylee's is helping her tremendously n doesn't appear at all harmful. My daughter's RBT doesn't suppress stims n neither do I because none of my daughter's are harmful or extremely disruptive. They allow her to get up n run around n yell in between activities,as do I,but then ask her to please come sit down after a couple minutes so they can continue. I felt horrible when I was told by an autistic adult that ABA therapy scarred them for life n made them feel terrible n not like themselves n that their relationship with their mother was still strained to this day because of it. I absolutely valued n appreciated their opinion n outlook on it, although I was a little offended as a parent at first, n it taught me to make sure that her current or any future therapist doesn't try to change her or suppress behaviors that aren't harmful or unhealthy.

When my son got diagnosed I had no clue what ABA is and I'm autistic so kind of stunned but people kept telling me how bad it is in the autism community. So I'm an outsider everywhere now BUT my son has come along way since ABA and I told them not to surpress his stims unless it's harmful and they said okay. I love the staff even. ABA has come along way from what it use to be. Someone even sent me an article that u can force happiness with ABA cuz I said my son loves ABA. Pshh I don't remember that game that she was using her hands with. They still have those creepy animatronic but I don't think they move now.

Right, it still varies place to place so I can’t speak for all of them, but it’s not all bad like it may be thought to be by some. It in general, has changed quite a bit from what it used to be. Braylee truly enjoys going, we make sure they don’t suppress stims or change her in ways that make her who she is. She is allowed to say no and have boundaries too. It’s helping her tremendously with life skills, communication, socialization and more and it’s the only therapy that we have seen this amount of progress from.

Aba has been super helpful with my 5yr old daughter. She has come such a long way with her communication skills. The meltdown due to lack of knowing what she wants is much less. 6:06 loving those Chuck-e-cheese games....like u say they certainly have stepped up their game! Love the horse one...how cool! Very much like the actual horse riding movements that she loved just recently. There is something to that rocking that opens a body up...it is proven! I rode for years and miss it. I have health issues but would live to do it again. How cool to have both options available, real and the game, until she gets that Wee Ranch of her own one day. Have you guys watched the documentary about an autistic boy and his parents search for connections to him through horses and this very emotional trip to Mongolia? It's major...and emotional...all the feels. When you need an interesting movie and probably some real tears give it a try. Sad but enlightening too. It is a book but also a documentary. The Horse Boy. Then I watched a different documentary on one of my favorite horse whisperers (horse trainers) and the Dad from the first movie I mentioned is one of his top instructors out there...really into the nature of horses. Anyway, "The Horse Boy"....check it out, at least the trailer, and see what u think... If you google "The Horse Boy Update" there are a variety of youtube vids on what they are doing now, a 6 step process of working with horses and people on the spectrum at different ages.. Very interesting. The movie is admittedly hard but the after stuff...very cool. The Horse Boy is the original documentary. They are making a fictional movie of it called HorseBoy but that hasn't been made yet...pre-production I believe.. just in case you see both online. Maybe you have seen or heard of that family before...let me know if you have or if you do check it out I would be interested.

A nosebleed makes sense. I was wondering what happened from the thumbnail. My daughter has never had a nosebleed surprisingly, because she does pick her nose. The little girl next door has had them a couple times while her n my daughter were playing outside. My daughter used to love the finger family song n I found these little finger puppets in characters from Paw Patrol, Mickey) Minnie n the gang, Disney princesses,etc. N she would do the sing with each set of characters on her fingers. She used to watch so many different versions of it on KZfaq. My daughter has gotten better about writing on herself with marker n pen but still does it sometimes but not as bad. One time she covered half her body in marker in less than 5 minutes n when I was bathing her I was finding it in places like "OMG".

I have a suggestion for nosebleeds. I used to get nosebleeds when I was younger, to the point where one time I had a 7 hr nosebleed and had to go to the hospital just in case there wasn't anything else wrong. The doctors gave me an ointment called Ayr. It works a lot better than using vasaline and you just put a little bit on a Qtip and put it in each nostril. I know that you can get it at CVS and probably any other drug store.

I remember when I had Latin in school.....I almost cannot remember anything...Latin is very much about just learning words and you only remember where you built emotional bridges. Like he sang sum-es-est-sumus-estis-sunt. That is stuck in my head....even though it doesn't make any logical sense. A very emotional mind is actually very logical. When it doesn't make sense aka "I don't understand the purpose or reason why.....I cannot/don't want to learn it.....cause when I don't understand it...means nothing to me". But a sound is a sort of bridge....like kids learn very well what they have heard within a nursery rhyme or song. Like some know all Lady Gaga songs. But they have difficulties to learn mathematical structures that do not make any sense to them.

I think with my autism, a lot of it is social and communication issues (a lot more in the past) and sensory issues and issues with self care, not so much behavioural, which I think speech therapy and OT therapy has helped, but I still wish I had ABA therapy. Also, my parents has a "chore" list and if I do all the things on the list, I get fake money so I can buy mints or ice cream or whatever else.

When ABA therapy was first introduced it was, in fact, extremely abusive. Children would be forced to appear “normal” (there are videos on KZfaq from around 10 years ago of ABA therapists repeatedly placing the child’s hands in their lap so they can’t stim), rather than live a happy life despite their autism. I have read many stories by autistic people who suffer from PTSD because of this. However, thanks to increased awareness on why autistic people behave the way that they do and the need for stimming, ABA overall has improved greatly. I can’t say that there probably isn’t some remote area where the old form of ABA is still practiced, but in most areas the stim suppressing, dog training form of ABA has become obsolete
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 5 жыл бұрын
Right, I am sure that when people experienced it in the past that it was that way. I just wish more people recognized that it can and has changed in most cases and has been very useful to many people. We never want Braylee to not stim or make her “fit in”. Our goals with ABA are about her being her happiest, most successful self.

@Taylor Fu Thank you for your comment. I understand what you are saying about ABA; however, I would like to share our personal experiences and why we have our daughter in that therapy. We had Braylee in OT and Speech for years with little to no progress. We were actually dismissed on breaks because progress was not being made. We believe ABA done the right way is not bad at all. In fact, because of ABA, she is thriving. An example is communication. Before ABA, Braylee had no way to communicate her wants and needs to us. She struggled with receptive communication. This led to a ton of frustration for her leading to violent meltdowns. ABA is the only therapy that has opened up communication through her speaking device, some words, and prompting. Effectively, ABA has given her a voice to let us know her likes, dislikes, wants, and needs. I could not take her out of her current ABA knowing that it is the reason she is communicating, making progress with toilet training, life skills, experience traveling, and seeing new places, etc. No ABA would mean none of that. It is easy for you, me, or anyone to say, don't do ABA because of peoples bad experiences. But, ABA could be the difference for someone living a life without having the chance to thrive and communicate like you and I can. With all that said. We understand there is very bad forms of ABA still out there. That is why it is up to us as parents to ensure we find the right place. We do NOT suppress her stims unless they are dangerous and we do not force eye contact. She truly loves going to the ABA center and staff that works with her. We can observe at anytime and the program is parent led. We have encountered many autistic individuals that agree with ABA. There are good programs out there. Sorry for the long response. I wanted to make sure I explain my position well.

@@TheWeeFamily I know the post you replied to is gone but I had to say that I love this response and the fact that you addressed that it’s up to the parent to ensure their therapy is in line with their values. There are some people who are strongly against aba and will go out of their way to tell people it’s bad, but discouraging aba altogether can stop some families from getting the therapy that can help their child have an improved life and it’s really too bad that some kids will miss out. You guys are amazing parents!

It all depends on the teachers! If you get ones who know how to get in touch with them they learn real good. Just have to get the good ones who care and understand how to connect with them. My son does NOT work well with anyone that shows they are not interested in helping them, but he does awesome with ones who care and he knows they want to teach and help him and not just saying it. These kids can pick up and they feed on vibes and ppls attitude towards them

My son has the food ninja on his amazon fire tablet it’s a 10.1 screen size but that is an awesome game I play it with him. She does love her singing and dancing. I have a website that comes out and puts in a sensory gym wherever you want it and it’s for private and at home or a public gym

I was interested in near the end where Braylee had spread blood on her cheeks. I know this will sound creepy and weird but I have always been almost attracted to the sensory and visual aspect of blood. The way it is runny and then becomes sticky and how it clots and changes colour. Maybe Braylee was just a bit confussed by her blood nose and so accidently spread it. Or maybe she thought it felt interesting too. I know i sound crazy. But ASD does make some ordinary stuff be experience in what seems strange ways to other people.

It’s possible. She loves any tactile sensory thing so she probably just reacted the same as she would and liked how it felt too.

OK so you actually CAN get one of those for your house, probably even a little smaller......keep an eye on Craigslist, other online selling sites because people frequently get rid of old arcade games and rides for really cheap or free....sometimes they may need a little work but most of the time they are in great working condition. And oh yeah, it used to be called Showbiz Pizza and they had creepy bears and other “animatronics”

I remember as a kid they had the animatronic band and it was always broken and super creepy! The last time we went to a Chuck E Cheese location was so long ago and everything was outdated and this one was actually really nice 🙂

I dont know a ton about autism ive def come a long way since watching the maas's and you guys so I dont get why in the world people wouldnt like ABA???? Seeing how far Abbie has come in the last few years and watching Braylee in last few months i cant see why anyone would be against it??

Because in the past children with autism have experienced abuse in the name of therapy, being forced to stop stimming, having aversives used to stop unwanted behaviours, whether or not they were harmful. Look up Lovaas and autism therapy. There is also one center that still uses electric shocks to "help" autistic people. Thus the bad reputation aba has received. There are plenty of autistic adults who have written about their abusive experiences in therapy.

I think it might be useful to learn to substitute more subtle stims in place of the ones that attract unwanted attention. Idk if you can substitute for a harmful one. I don't remember that being one of my things. I'm speaking from my own experience: in public, at least, I don't "stim," I "fidget." Obviously, we're two different people....
