Do you or anyone you know on the spectrum have some made up words they love to use? Do they use those words over and over like a vocal stim? Let us know your thoughts! #autism #autismawareness #autistic

When I was little, I had what I called “B” language, which basically meant every word started with the letter b. For example, the phrase “How are you doing?” would be pronounced “Bow bare bou boing?” Currently, I mumble under my breath constantly. I think it’s a vocal stim, but it’s actual words. It’s not noises like we typically think of with vocal stimming. Unfortunately, the amount of autistic behaviors that exist are light years ahead of the terms we have to describe them.

I do think that it’s actually pretty sweet and cute, every time my autistic 7 year old says words that are off or when he makes up words that only make sense to him,It makes me giggle…Anytime anyone says “thank you” to him he responds with “I welcome!”

It’s good that Alistair is recording himself, talking to Siri, etc. it seems to have helped his verbal development quite a bit. I also watch the 7-Ahead KZfaq channel quite a bit and I have noticed that similar activities in combination with his speech therapy and his preschool activities have help Simon quite a bit with his verbal development. He was considered nonverbal until fairly recently and now (at least on a good day) he seems to communicate almost as well as other kids his own age. That tells me that the activities that are helping Alistair are probably generally useful for many kids who are either level one or level two who struggle with their own speech initially. On a related note I’m level one (I was level two when I was growing up) and one thing that helped me somewhat with my verbal skills was giving me some tape recorders to play with. This was back in the 1980s (when I was somewhere in the eight to ten age range) and again in the 1990s after I saw the movie Home Alone 2.

I had this as a child XDD Whenever I got overstimulated out of excitement (I don't have ASD, I have ADHD with sensory processing issues), I would yell out made-up words like "jing-gijong-go" (which doesn't make sense in any of the 3 languages I know), "poopapoops", "ughuyughu" (I gargle too when I say this), etc. I try to hold them back nowadays because I don't want to be embarrassed, but they still sometimes leak out. My dad also does this, making up words and nonsense names, especially when he towards animals lol

Thank you for the education. This is so cool. Didn’t even know about this until today. Is it a bad thing if I have Autism and I enjoi creating new names for things? Trying to see if this is common thing. (I’m an adult, 28 years) Examples: Chocolarry (Burglery of chocolate slice) or Smell-a-brate (Celebration of smells) or have a smell-a-bration. *Self disclosure: For me its like stemming and its relaxing or can even be like a tool for re-assurance (don’t know how it would fit in)

Yes I cried!!! Happy tears of course!!! He does "visual stimming" I learned from his OT what it was... He will spend HOURS like u said about ur Son just rewinding and playing back the same thing on TV over and over again... Cracking up laughing having a ball... He also LOVES to spin SO FAST... Taz is his nickname... so fitting... lol... He's the most amazing human being I've ever known and had the pleasure to raise... He's my cousin, I adopted him when he was 7 months old...🥰 U have a beautiful family... Thank u for sharing ur lives with us... It really helps to see other families of Autistic children... I do those things too like sometimes a word just pops out of my mind and then I think of words that are mostly made-up that rhyme and have the same amount of syllables with that word and then have urges to say it out. I would get reprimanded by my parents because they don't want other people thinking that I am weird. It feels calming from my experience and I still do it only when my parents are not around.

Just try saying these words multiple times workers, lurgers, worgers, rurgers, nurgers, burgers. There's this sensation in my mouth that I feel when saying these repeatedly and it feels calming and sometimes funny (sorry I can't specifically describe it).

On a possibly related note my sister and I are both on the spectrum (she’s level one and always has been, I was level two when I was younger (I’m currently level one)) and my sister makes puns (I guess you might call them) that most people don’t typically make. For example if someone is having a conversation and uses words such as “Misinterpretation”, “Misunderstanding”, or other words containing the “mis” prefix she will sometimes say (usually after laughing, but not always) “Don’t you mean Mrs?”, followed by the rest of the word. Given that she does this but I don’t do it I realize that this is not universally seen with people who are level one and verbal but I have to wonder 1. Have you ever seen or heard of this before? AND 2. If other people on the spectrum who are level one do this how common is it? My parents think that my sister is literally the only person in the entire world who does this but after the number of autism videos that I have seen on this channel, 7-Ahead, and some other autism channels here and there (mostly on KZfaq) I am inclined to think that some other people also do this. What is your take on how common this specific behavior is?

From watching the 7-Ahead KZfaq channel I noticed that Simon was using some made-up language that reminds me of Alistair’s maybe about a year ago or so right around the time that he was officially becoming verbal (around the time that he was starting preschool or possibly slightly before). I also noticed that he and Alistair seem to be pretty good friends. I wonder if Alistair has been helping Simon with his speech and perhaps some other areas (in terms of reaching various developmental milestones). On a related note it is my understanding that Simon became officially daytime potty trained by some time in November of last year. I think he’s still doing well with this (in the absence of any news to the contrary (no news is good news, probably)). I’m mentioning this because given that Simon and Alistair are good friends it just occurred to me that if Simon’s potty training during the day begins to regress a bit (as sometimes happens with kids on the spectrum, and even some neurotypical kids (due to stress (for example)) Alistair might be able to talk to Simon and/or be a role model for him to get things back on track should that ever become necessary. Statistically speaking, this probably won’t be necessary (many kids don’t regress, but it’s always possible). Hopefully if this does happen Simon and Alistair will remain friends and Alistair will be willing to help him with anything that he might need some help with. Generally speaking from what I have seen of Simon in various videos it occurs to me that if he resists doing something that his parents or other adults want him to do that he might be more willing to do them if asked to do so by someone closer to his own age (like maybe Alistair, for example). These are all of the ideas that I have on that for now. Back to the topic of made-up language: By the way Simon’s use of made-up language would have been right around the time that he was learning phrases like “uh-oh” or “oh no” or perhaps even a month or more before that, I forget.

I thought my daughter was saying nonsense (on repeat) once i realized there was a melody to it, i realized she was singing actual songs!! She’s 7 now & takes speech. We can hear some things clearly & some things we can’t. She mispronounces a lot of words, by saying the wrong letter sounds. Like Blue & Black are Glue & Glack. I love her so much tho. We’re just gonna keep reinforcing the correct pronunciation.

ohhhh yesss this is all too familiar to me. My son is almost 7 and has ASD... he's in love with Captain Underpants and will run around quoting every word but in such a way that all of the words mush together to become who knows what. When I ask him to repeat it slower he can, but he just loves talking soooooo fast that it becomes new words to him that he will repeat endlessly.

I've noticed my 4 year old autistic son saying loads of non-words/made up words the last few months. He also rhymes made words over and over running the couch length. I think the rhyming and pacing the couch calms him when he is over stimulated. His every day vocab is really up there and can articulate himself very well, so this introduction of all these new words and rhyming with them is fairly new.

I love what you're doing, but are you able to help me? I am a teacher and i have a kid in my class that I feel is autistic but her parents says he is not. He loves removing his shows in class and he loves making certain noises or even scream, and also bagging (like swinging it back and forth ) to make the sounds. Also he chews mostly boxes and coloured manilla papers. Could it be he is autistic ? Its a challenge for me to find methods of teaching him or even calming him down when he screams and to get him put back his shoes. Thank you for this videos and looking forward to your feedback

My son is just starting the process of being diagnosed but is almost exactly like your smallest boy. My son is nine. His Daddy has ASD so I had suspicions he had it too but he never so extreme signs until covid lockdowns. He turned 9 in February and while so smart he is emotionally more like a 7 year old. He is also small like a 7 year old. How old are your children and have you ever heard of a child being super high functioning and exhibiting only minor SPD symptoms to becoming low functioning after a hard time in their life? It's so hard. He does have a made up language. My favorite "vocal stem" as you wife put it is when he repeats "sodi-da sodi-da." A bit of Sprite makes him super happy so he even calls soda, "sodi-da" now.

I make made up words from video games and tv and tablets. My mom says that it is called scripting. Scripting is basically where you are supposed to be non verbal but at some point you pretty much copy what everyone else says even if it doesn’t make since in society.I actually do what Alistair does when I’m supposed to be sleeping and I will have conservations with myself and don’t go to bed until midnight. I also do that with certain words like truck and frog. So that becomes (fruck)fork becomes the bad f word. Sometimes I do what Alistair does where I will mess with Siri or with the Google home and it will say I don’t understand or something like that. I have actually used my kindle so many times to where we had to order a new fire tablet for me because it has no more storage, doesn’t hold a charge and can’t hold onto a Wifi connection because I used it every day.

Not sure if it counts, but my brother and I would call each other (both autistic) “Stupidoh” instead of a normal insult, not sure why

I’ll tell you, when I was a kid and I have autism by the way when I was a kid I made up a thing for Puppy because I couldn’t say Puppy very well, so I said this.puttapy that’s how I said Puppy. It was actually supposed to be but P. But a friend of mine came up with Potter P one night when she was asleep and couldn’t say it right I mean, PUTTAPY. Sorry about that I don’t know why I said it like that. I remember I was a kid I would say I wanna put the puppy. I mean I want to pet the puppy but it came out the other way. Weird huh? I know I’ve came up with Potter Potter Potter‘s Maui Maui hours Americans male pup pow Malmo meow even dictation really messed up OK I’m gonna try to spell these the best I can we’ll see what happens here you go! Pittas mow as Uttaranchal OK this is not working the way I wanted it to. OK that’s not gonna work either apparently can’t spell checks everything. I don’t know how I can show it to you it’s just quite funny the way we do stuff like instead of a puppy or a pot to pee I’ll say Potter or Mela survive that. Like instead of saying Puppy I would say Potter P. Pot to pee OK this thing is not working well anyway I am a thing about Puppy that I would talk about my putters or your stomach that was kind of weird oh no dictation really doesn’t do well out cash anyway, you get the picture I have my own weird language about puppies and such like that so yeah and Puppy is a word that I love because there must be a soft warm puppies and how precious they are
