We took our daughter Braylee (with autism and is nonverbal) in for sedation dentist work for the first time. It was stressful going in but it needed to be done. We were surprised at the results! We thought she may have a few cavities but we were wrong. Overall, sedation dentistry worked for Braylee and we are relieved that we made it through! #autism #weefam

Do not feel like bad parents! I worked in a pediatric dental office and tons of patients have to get be put to sleep for work. There are numerous forms of sedation we can use. Thank you for sharing how extensive her work was, trust me it is very common! Never feel at fault. We always tell our parents, not to worry you are here now! Parenting in general is HARD and when your child has specialized needs it’s even more difficult at times.I posted a video about brushing teeth for parents who have a child with special needs over on my channel. Also, instead of brushing teeth in the bathroom, brush in bed or on the floor. Mom or dad sit up, put her head in your lap, tilt her chin up toward the ceiling. Have a towel beside you so she can spit or while her Mouth without having to get up a million times. If she tried to escape, just put your leg over her, gently :) I hope this helps 💕

I'm so proud of the way you both handled this necessary event. Sounds like you found just the right Dentist and staff. Next time will be easier for you, since this experience went so well. Going to the dentist is not an easy task with littles, but I think it will be easier for her the next time, too. I'm glad you added the "extra" at the end. I had a big smile on my face as I watched the relief on your faces, and the "hey!!!!!!" part. Fun times. They'll always outweigh the bad. God bless all three of you as you learn, teach and grow through life with B. Thank you for taking us along on your journey.

So sorry for miss Bray. I'm glad she did well and hopefully some of her awake nights subside, maybe caused by pain she couldn't tell you about. She had to have been having pain. And try the flossers to help you get in there, very hard to get hands in a mouth that small especially when trying to bite you. My son has very sensitive skin as well. Just sitting on the toilet causes red marks for a couple hours.

We have used the flossers before with success but then she decided she didn’t like them anymore. We will also talk to ABA and have them work on some oral care with her there as well. She’s got pretty sensitive skin and in general she bruises pretty easily.

Plus momma you’re a beautiful and great momma. Don’t feel bad about her teeth because mine brushed twice a day and he still had to get the same thing plus they pulled his top two teeth out , he was only three so he was z3

Hey guys! Don’t feel like bad parents because of B’s teeth. Some people don’t get what it’s like to have to brush the teeth of a child; atypical or not. You all are doing a great job. I’m the only one in my family that doesn’t need sedation dentistry. Sadly, my kids have inherited my teeth and are in the dentist office more often then sunshines. I’m so proud of Braylee. She did an awesome job. It can be so scary, but she handled it like a champ! Yay! B! Love you guys! Give Braylee a big high five from me!

It’s gotten better, but in the past it has been a 2 person job just to get in her mouth for teeth brushing at home. That’s a bummer, sometimes it just doesn’t seem fair when you get bad genes for teeth because there’s not always much you can do. We are very proud of her as well!! She’s tough 🙂

When i was younger in situations like this at the dentist they prescribed some kind of valium that was mild but it helped settle your anxiety. Mind you im now 41 but still im kinda surprised they didnt do this or maybe yall arent into trying that. I will say it does help, even neurotypical kids can have major aniety & issues with the dentist. Seems 2 be quite common. Im glad now days B is better with appts.. I really enjoy watching the old vlogs i've not seen before!

I'm glad you all had a positive dental apt and that it was sedation. I went with someone I knew and her severely autistic son. The dentist put him in a thing like a cacoon where he was belted into this contraption he couldn't get out of. His mom refused to get him sedated. He ended up kicking one of the nurses in the eye, needless to say the dentist stopped seeing him. He screamed all the way through After we left I told it was too traumatizing for him and I wouldn't go again. He had really healthy teeth. I felt so bad for Chris. So its nice to see parents doing what's right for their child. Thanks for posting I now know it can be a positive experience.
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 5 жыл бұрын
That’s unfortunate. I know bad experiences at the dentist are so common with autistic kids. They do have the papoose thing at most dentists. We didn’t use it before but the last regular visit we took her to, we had 3 of us trying to hold her and it was so traumatic for all of us that we knew sedation needed to happen.

I think this video was very helpful for new parents to have an idea of what to expect. I’m very happy she have an easy and non traumatic experience and it might be easier for you guys in the future less anxiety and she will have this nice memory as a reference is good that it was fast... she is very resilient that’s for sure... I have a question does she have her baby tooth 🦷 or grownup tooth? I recommend the xiaomi toothbrush is not 360 like the one that Abby use but the supersonic xiaomi toothbrush vibrates 31 thousand time per minute that it is awesome.
@TheWeeFamily

That’s what we were hoping for! She still has all her baby teeth. The dentist would have pulled some of then because the cavities were so deep but because none of them were even remotely loose, she put the crowns and did fillings instead.

Precious babe. You are confident that they aren’t in the business of taking advantage of people right? My mom had a dentist convince her parents that she needed 12 crowns and several fillings/root canals at once and it messed up her teeth for life and then the next dentist she went to pulled up the X-ray records from the guy who did the massive amount of work and found out he lied. I’m shocked sweet girl needed so much work. My heart aches for her. DO NOT feel like you failed her. You guys are incredible parents who move mountains for your girl! I’m glad it went smoothly for the most part! Keep being awesome!
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we are sure. We know that years of the inability to clean and X-ray at the dentist along with her not allowing us to brush/floss and pica or teeth grinding have all played a part in her dental situation. We trust the dentist she has and we were able to look in her mouth before the appointment somewhat and could visibly see that she had at least a handful of cavities. There are some bad people out there though unfortunately.

The Wee Family glad to know you feel confident in them! So unfortunate for her. Genetics also play a roll. When I was in the hospital 200+ days I expected to have tons of dental issues from my teeth not being a priority/taken care of properly. I had not even one cavity. They said I get it from my dad. Strong teeth run on his side of the family. I hope the new brush helps and she has less trouble in the future! I hope my question was worded properly.

Nae55 _ the other thing that the Wee fam and dentist have had to consider, I’m sure, is Braylee’s difficulty with flossing/brushing and the damage that is current-basically I’m thinking the dentist needed to think and anticipate that it is unlikely she will “get another go” to get things checked up on for a while at least-regular checkups just aren’t really feasible. The Wee’s said they trusted their dentist to do what needed to be done “as if it was their own child”-it’s a little rough to think Braylee’s parents have been taken advantage of-especially considering they have said they have seen cavities-combine that with Braylee’s severe autism-I too would be getting all that may even possibly be needing doing in that 1 visit-to save trauma (and money) in the long run.

I don’t know if it’ll impact her appetite. She has been eating a TON lately so I wonder if she’s going to go through a growth spurt. Maybe?? I don’t know if it’s from sensitivity or maybe sensory that keeps her from liking the cold desserts. Maybe we will keep trying and see if it changes. Thank you. Maybe picksters/mini flossers-those toothpick one end small flosser the other may help you with flossing her teeth-I hope you know what I mean! I guess now is the time to try to get Braylee as desensitised to brushing/flossing before her adult teeth come-maybe Asa and Priscilla could give you some pointers-or maybe even your ABA therapist-maybe they could work on it with you guys.

We have used those flossers before successfully with her but then she quit cooperating all together and fought us so hard about it. I feel you. Lotus has OCD, PICA, and oral fixation. Her teeth are chipped and broken on the front top from over brushing. We have been to the dentist so many times and nothing gets accomplished. The last time we went she was so stressed that she pooped herself. It's not easy to explain when you as the parent is crying and literally throwing a fit right along with your child. Both of us were screaming "STOP!" Lotus has OHP (Oregon Health Plan) so they asign a dentist and our experience is they are not trained to handle special needs at all. Lol. She looks like my daughter when she wakes up. That face though! My daughter sings all the time too. I make up little songs to sing to her to make her less anxious,calm her down n teach her things. That's so awesome that the nurse at the dentist/oral surgeon has a son with Asperger's so she'll understand a little bit better how to handle things with B. I need to take my daughter to the dentist but I'm terrified. They're gonna have to sedate her just to examine n clean her teeth. I'm so scared of her freaking out when they have sharp metal tools near/in her mouth. I need to find a children's dentist that understands/has experience with special needs.

Cavities can also be genetic though! For me, it took a long time, but eventually ever crevice got a cavity and now I can’t get any more 😅 it’s because my teeth have such deep grooves. (Had such deep grooves.) You see, I have used an electric tooth brush and soft tooth, I floss and use and mouthwash. Sometimes I use the soft toothbrush for a pre-brush or just for my tongue and gums., and the electric brush for the real job. People always tell me I have very nice teeth and the dentists always highly praise me for my “great home care”. But at the end of the day, none of that mattered 😅 all of my teeth are filled On the other hand, I have a friend who just does a simple night brush, but because of how her teeth are, she never got a cavity 🤦‍♀️

When they put Braylee under, she just gets everything done while she’s there and they get a good look. She actually goes again Wednesday. It was so long ago I’m not really sure? She eats mostly softer foods as her normal everyday foods anyway.

Braily did well I don't know if she did but I would not be surprised if Braily played outside when she got 🏡 I noticed that it was snowy outside.

They did a mask. The first time not knowing what to expect definitely made me nervous too. We have done it twice now and it does get easier with knowing what to expect the second time.

We have done sedation dentistry once and it was just at our local surgical center. Every other time it was typical office visits and she absolutely hated it.

That's funny bcuz I was gonna say David looked like a soon to be new dad wearing his gown n hair cover. I feel like a terrible mom because my daughter hasn't been to the dentist yet n she just turned 6. I did try once n she wouldn't go in the chair. U would've thought someone was trying to kill her. Then I tried at her school twice because they had a dentist come once a year but the first time they said they didn't get the form that I filled out giving permission even though I sent it n 2nd time the dentist didn't come. I have always taken excellent care if her teeth though, brushing 2x a day on school days n 3x on wknds, homeschool during pandemic. I need to find a children's dentist that has experience with special needs. I want to get the toothbrush Asa uses for Abby for my daughter too. Don't feel bad about the cavities. U guys try your best. It's hard when kids don't like to brush, won't let u do it thoroughly, won't floss or can't/won't use mouthwash. My daughter has super sensitive skin like B. Everything leaves a mark on her.

Hi, I just came across your channel. I am visually impaired and I run a nonprofit. We have recently started doing dental programs, some of them for special needs because from my own experiences, getting dental care is so difficult. And taking care of oral hygiene is difficult.

You are absolutely right! Taking good care of teeth and oral hygiene is difficult and having it available or affordable and all that is a big struggle for a lot of people! Why you’re doing is great!

It'll just be a much better experience to sedate her. Since she has SPD, it can cause her to have a meltdown when she has people's hands and strange tools in her mouth. She also has Pica so she might try to eat the objects in her mouth, which can cause her to gag and chock. She has had traditional appointments before, but I'm sure they weren't able to do a super thorough exam, so sedation will make it easier for everyone.

Sedation is way less traumatic for her then being forcibly held down
