It's Thanksgiving time, and that means time with family... extended family. Our five kids are excited to see their cousins, but a new place with lots of people can mean new challenges as well, especially for our youngest two boys. They each have full-blown meltdowns, and we try to help them label their feelings and communicate what they want. Happy Thanksgiving!

I really appreciate you showing how to help Ezra and Simon when they have a hard time. Ezra’s seemed like a sensory overload, while Simon’s was a lack of communication. Neither of the boys were scolded for their behaviors, but were taught what was happening and what they could choose to do to feel better. Love it so much.

Thank you Catherine. ❤️ I appreciate your kind words. You are very right! These precious boys would not learn anything if we gave them punishments for their outbursts. They experience the world differently than I do and I feel as their mother I need to help them communicate effectively, and feel heard and understood as best I can. They live in a very complicated world. I want to try to make it less complicated for them- Holly 😊.

Your mentors, leaders/guides, advocates and you both give the voiceless power, grit, determination and so much more. I think Ezra started by throwing a fit and pushed himself into a sensory meltdown. Simon threw a fit but had enough margin not to melt down. I myself have never had an actual meltdown that I can recall: all my fits in childhood were me behaving badly and choosing to carry on. I've had panic attacks in adulthood that were close to meltdowns, but they still generally resolve if the triggering issue is dealt with, as opposed to me being completely along for the ride until they resolve on their own.

5:00 My ASD child would totally have a meltdown in this situation. Plenty of new stressors, tired from travel, lots of noises, bright lights, people everywhere. Ezra is doing a good job IMHO. He just needs a quiet dark place to calm that brain down. A place without too many people might help. The compressions help too. In general, every ASD kid I've spoken too says not to talk to someone who is having a meltdown. It is too much input to process when one's brain is on fire.

From my experience when I am in burnout which probably happened here with all the people at Thanksgiving or home too much it's like dry grass at only takes a spark and you get a full force meltdown. Yes as an adult they suck.

I bet it was difficult for our kids during Thanksgiving because so much was new. We had so much going on and so many people that they weren’t used to. The lantern thing was probably Ezras version of sharing that he likes it. He have noticed that others shows than they like something and tryes to do the same, but it gets a bit weird because he dosent do it so natural. The fact that neurotypical shares things they like have I totally missed until you guys told me through a video, but Ezra seems to have noticed it.
