Magazine is everything with the rifle. I made a lucky find in a gun/ pawn shop that had alot of military gear and guns. In a box they had 9 30 Rd military mags still wrapped in original wax paper. I gladly paid them $100 for all 9. This was about 10 yr ago . I bought one of these auto ordinance carbines, couldn't get it to work right. Traded it back to gun store for an AR-15. Months later I bought a old GI carbine. A postal meter. No problems.

Almost ashamed to say I haven't shot my M1 Carbine in over fifteen years. I like the wood heat shield for the "original" look. Mine is a Plainfield (Dunellen) with metal shield and no lug. I got it in early 1990's and have under 1,000 rounds thru it. Got it with sling and oiler, a five and two thirty round mags for $1 from a very dear friend as she wanted it off her NYC long gun permit. Not sure of the ammo I used but it never had feeding trouble, was quite reliable and accurate to 75 yards (my longest shooting with this gun). Love the sound of the action opening and closing, so positive. Nice light rifle. Thanks for showing off yours. Very enjoyable video and I haven't forgotten about the thirty rounders for you.

What's funny is the used Auto Ordinance M1 Carbine I had over 10 years ago ran flawless, even took it groundhog hunting once sucessfully with soft points and it dropped a big one like a rock at 50 yards. Out here they dig huge holes everywhere and tear up the drainage systems in the farmers crop fields, so they are considered invasive pests like prairy dogs are out west. Hopefully this one will function flawlessly too after a few hundred rounds, as I mentioned I have heard is often necessary. One way to find out! And thanks again for thinking of me; will definately put those mags to use in a future video whenever you get them to me.

I heard that Wolff Spring M1 Service Pack will correct all the problems with their Auto Ordinance M1 Carbine. Many accounts talk about the Rifle as “operating as an entirely different firearm after installing the M1 Carbine Spring Service Pack”.

@@BuckeyeBallistics The Auto Ordinance appears to be a reasonably well manufactured rifle. I believe that this rifle has inferior springs which are weak. Years back during high school, a friend had purchased a Universal Carbine that functioned flawlessly with many thousands of rounds without any jams. However, after Military Parts dwindled in supply, Universal manufactured their guns with proprietary dual recoil springs. That little rifle NEVER JAMMED. Racking the Auto Ordinance, you can feel the operating rod spring feels weak, not as responsive as that old Universal M1. I would definitely go with the Wolff Service Pack. I recently fixed a Marlin Model 60 by merely bending the Ejector Spring and used a Nickel as a kind of Height Gauge. It’s called the “Nickel Test” in Marlin circles. The gun went from jamming ever two rounds to firing with absolutely no malfunctions of any types. Springs are very important and it just may be that Auto Ordinance is using inferior springs.

You shouldn't load those 30 round magazines with more than about 25 shots. Normally this isn't true with most 30 round magazines (AR, AK, Mini 14, etc) but with the M1 Carbine 30 round magazines they're not super reliable if loaded with more than about 25 rounds. Been the case since they were adopted - the magazines and the recoil spring are the Achilles heel of the carbine. Great vid!

Apply light grease (I use high temp red) in the channel along the right channel for the operating rod assembly (for the bolt assy). Also apply a light coat of grease along the center of the barrel underneath for the gas rod and weight (gas ejection system). Finally apply a light coat of grease to the face of the magazine catch (forward of the magazine release button - so the magazine always seats properly). Use light coat of gun oil at other lubrication points. Mine (the very same Auto Ordinance by Kahr Arms) shipped dry and I addressed this out of the box before a trip to the range. My carbine has run flawlessly with no light strikes or stove pipes (from the box). Lubrication is critical on this Carbine as well as the M1 Garand.

When I had another M1 carbine over ten years ago, it ran perfect on Sellier & Bellot ammo- I intend to try some of that again. The rifle is far more powerful than most pistol rounds, but yes, underpowered compared to other centerfire rifles. Mil spec .30 Carbine cartridges produce 967ft-lbs of energy, which is practically 3 times the amount of the energy a mil spec .45acp produces (356ft-lbs). It's much closer to AR15 power (1294ft-lbs) than pistol carbine calibers. It's also plenty accurate enough to hit an assailant at 300 yards, which I intend to demonstrate in the next shooting video of it. Also, it has already been demonstrated by others on youtube, such as tnoutdoors. I got my cheap Hi-Point 995 carbine to shoot 300 yards quite accurately on my channel, so I'm confident the M1 is at least as capable.

My AO M1 has been a nightmare. Feed ramp was unpolished with a glob of metal right at the top. Got feed issues along with not seating properly. I’ve put Wolfe springs in it. The bolt had a bunch of grit in the extractor spring area which is surprising because I bought it new, built in 8/2020. I’ve only put about 75-100 rounds through it and I understand I need to run several hundred more. I hope to get it running well.

Then I cleaned and lubed the Carbine as I had been taught and myself and two friends shot up the majority of that ammo. The original Korea surplus U.S.G.I. 30 round mags seemed to work just fine. A lot of Korea M-1 Garand and .30 Carbine stuff in the late 60s . Unbelievable deals on surplus ammo. Now, .30 Carbine ammo is at a premium price and hard to find. They are not much different if both cartridges are fired from rifles. The carbine shoots a 110 gr bullet at about 1900 fps. The 357 with 125 gr bullet can be fired from a lever action rifle at about the same velocity. Source: Hornady Reloading Handbook, 10th edition.

@@kimwarfield1587 The 357 velocity you mention is for a handgun. If the 357 with a 125 grain bullet is fired from a rifle (longer barrel) it can reach a velocity of near 2000 fps. The Hornady Reloading Handbook I referred to in my earlier post used a Rossi 92 lever action rifle with a 16" barrel for the test gun and a max load of H110 powder to reach a velocity of 2000 fps. Comparing one cartridge results from a rifle and the other from a pistol is NOT an apples to apples comparison.

@@jerryware5749 true, but that is what it is compared to, not from a rifle. Frankly if I was using a lever gun I prefer my Henry side loader brass receiver in 30-30. The M1 30 carbine was to replace the 1911 so it is compared to hand guns.

Dude I don't know where you're getting your .357 figures from but that is not a standard load. You're probably quoting some buffalo bore loads which is not what your average .357 shooter is shooting, nor can all .357 firearms handle those loads. A standard .357 load is 125gr at 1450fps creating 583ft-lbs of energy, or a 158gr at 1240fps creating 539ft-lbs of energy. So a standard .30 carbine load *is* almost literally twice as powerful as a standard .357 load.

@@BuckeyeBallistics your 357 mag data is solid!! the 30 cal carbine looks similar except the longer barrel gives it more velocity......atleast thats what i thought. i have been wrong before.
@BuckeyeBallistics
@BuckeyeBallistics 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I mean they are somewhat similarly sized. Overall length is similar and caliber isn't too far off: .30cal and .35 cal. The .30 carbine has a little more powerful charge behind it and slightly lighter bullet, which is why it is much faster. .30 carbine would definately be slower from a shorter barrel, and likewise you can get higher velocity from .357 in a rifle, but it's still not quite as powerful with standard loads from a rifle; getting very close though! But when most people reference .357 they are referring to revolver ballistics since 90% of .357's are revolvers, and 90+% .30 carbine are rifles; so that's what I went with. If you want to compare a .357 rifle to the M1 carbine rifle, then yes they are very close in power and trajectory.
