I went the option 2 route and love it! The ruuvi tags are incredible and this was my first time using the esp32 boards! I have been wanting to setup the bluetooth to wifi bridge boards since the first time I saw Intermit.Tech talk about the idea a year or so ago, but was so intimidated until this video where you broke it down so I could easily do it, and for that, I am eternally grateful. Now, one question about my setup... I bought the 2 pack of esp32 board you linked to on Amazon that works perfect, but I wanted to start creating a network of these bridges and wonder if anyone knows the right way to join or aggregate the data from both bridges so that if one fails, the system will continue to work. also, should I post this sort of question on the forum instead? seems it may be as simple as groups yaml but I am not sure.

Good Stuff man. Got stuck for a bit. I went cheap, got 4 sensors from Amazon for like $8. Turns out they are bmPs... not bmE. Once I figured out all was good. Ending up going with the BMP280 because one, more accurate than DHT11 and two... I could NOT get a DHT11 up on wemos D1 mini. Came right up on NodeMCU. Gotta try the BMP280 on the D1 mini now. I have 5 of the damn things....LOL. FYI... BMP doesn't sense Humidity. Not a problem for me since I live in Metro Phoenix and... we only have humidity a few months out of the year...LOL... and I'll be using the sensor indoor only during the winter. Humidity is currently a whopping 5%!!! Good video though man. Laid out well. Easy to see the screen too which is one of my pet peeves. Even on a 27" display... too many youtubers have either small or blurry screens showing their work or examples. Thanks man.

Thanks man. Humidity is usually pretty low for me too but having plants in a tent can really bump it up. When the lights go out, if my fan isn’t running pretty hard, my 4’x6’ is like 40-50% higher than the rest of my house.

Ok, I'll start by saying well done, for someone without formal education on electronics, you might wanna start thinking about your career path.. Having said that, your problem with other temp and hum sensors weren't in the hardware, in my opinion, but in the implementation of it... I've learned that using "simple" electronics, sometimes require using safe guards in your code, like taking multiple readings, and only everaging the middle 60% after sorting... I got my simple dht22 sensor to compete with a high end T.I. sensor. Keep up the good work.
@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You're probably right - I was looking for results right out of the box and moved on pretty quickly after seeing the spread between the batch of DHTs I initially tested. I'm sure their performance could have been enhanced with some massaging... I think ESPhome oversamples 16x by default on each reading but that's the extent of the processing that's done, from what I can tell. I found the DHTs also produced a lot of random spikes as well, which - again, could be filtered out, but the BMEs just seemed much more consistent from the get-go.

I did that with a smoke alarm... some if ghem have possibly to connect something, you can just run everything over a big relais ( in germany we call the big industrial ones "leistungs schütz") and it will disconnect everything in case of smoke ... you cant really do it with temperature since it is to late once the air is hot. To have a chance to stop a fire you have to stay below the burning temps of the materials you used

Just a note of caution: The BME280 is primarily a pressure/humidity sensor. The temperature probe is internal and is used for measurement compensation, the temperature values do not represent the environment but the internal temp in the BME280. It can be used to estimate the external temperature, but the values are subject to variation. In the data sheet: "The integrated temperature sensor has been optimized for lowest noise and highest resolution. Its output is used for temperature compensation of the pressure and humidity sensors and can also be used for estimation of the ambient temperature."

The way I've done it is I'm just passing the readings obtained by the Arduino over serial to my ESP32, and then I publish these readings to Home Assistant using the MQTT pubsubclient. You just need the mosquitto add on installed in HA, and then you set up an MQTT sensor in your configuration.yaml that listens to whatever topic you're sending that data out under. I can help you out if you need some guidance.

First thanks for this series,, it got me started into home automation for our greenhouse... ive learned alot but have many questions still!! 😆 Maybe I missed it, but if you use a Bluetooth temp sensor, similar to the ruvvi, does each one need an esp32? Or is 1 esp32 capable of detecting multiple sensors? Also, is it possible to add Bluetooth capabilities to the raspberry pi so you don't even need the esp32? Unfortunatley I got the Raspberry pi4 not the 4B, but As I understand bluetooth capabilites can be installed from a raspian terminal (so of course you'd have to have HA installed on top of raspbian, rather than just having HA installed alone as this video series has demonsteated)... Am I making sense? 🤣

@@LEDGardenerThanks for reply. Ill give you the run down of what I've done but by all means, no pressure to solve my tech problems :) I bought the rasberry pi 4 kit + several inkbird ibs-th1 sensors.... i had unfortunate timing with your series... i was too eager to buy temp sensors before waiting for your part 5 upload. 🤣 The decision to buy inkbird was because I read some github about inkbird ibs-th1 being able to integrate into HA, so figured it would work. It did work and i got the sensor added as an entity in HA, but the values were coming up "unknown".... Now realize that I need something called Bluepy. So then I got SSH addon in HA and tried to install the Bluepy there, but it didn't work...., realized that the SSH addon in HA is not actually the Pi terminal... so then I'm thinking I need to install the raspberry pi OS and then install HA on top of that by this method community.home-assistant.io/t/installing-home-assistant-supervised-on-raspberry-pi-os/201836 I will then install bluepy in this same terminal. Then add the inkbird github repository as i did before through HA file editor. I have no idea what I'm doing to be honest, but learning all this stuff is fun. Two weeks ago, I didn't even know what a raspberry pi was besides a delicious dessert, so i think I'm well on my way into the rabbit hole now 😅

I think I have this figured out. I found a repo on github (github.com/stelford/home-assistant_inkbird) with some files you can dump into home assistant as a custom_component. You should not have to install bluepy yourself. I tried creating the custom component and adding to my config file and it all worked. If I had one of these sensors I'd know for sure but I think at this point I would just need to point it at a real MAC address within range. Is this what you've done?

@@LEDGardener and yes, that sounds kind of like what I did. I tried to add repository as a URL but it said not valid. So I created a new folder in file editor called "custom_components" and within that one called "inkbird" where I put files. Then added the code to the yaml file. It said it was valid so I restarted HA and was able to add the entity on my dashboard. However even within close range of sensor, values showed "unknown". While digging in the github file I read it said bluepy was required so I thought that was the issue. I have no idea if thats the problem or not. Many thanks for your help!!!...
