How to dim your Mean Well B-type driver from Home Assistant using an optocoupler. This method should work for other drivers that have a dedicated dimming circuit that accepts a PWM signal and can source its own current on this circuit (tested and working on Inventronics EUD-600SxxxDT series drivers).

High quality content. I'm a computer science student in uni, but without your forum and information package on youtube it would have been hard to make grow light by myself. Understanding how meanwell drivers actually work made everything so simple. This automated dimming and scheduling system is something I will definetly add on my system. I might implement it with arduino since I have one lying around. Thank you for everything you are doing for this community. Kudos to you by chili and tomato grower from Finland.

Hi all, something to add and one thing to correct... Afterwards, I also tested this method on an Inventronics EUD-600S560DT (HLG Scorpion Rspec) and EUD-600S280DT (HLG 600 Rspec) and it worked great. Something I need to correct in the video - at 11:33 I said that it didn't matter which way you plug the dim+ and dim- wires into the output of the optocoupler. This is incorrect. The Inventronics drivers I used did not dim all the way down to off unless I put the Dim- on the optocoupler emitter pin (with the orientation I have it in the video, it would be the top right pin) and the Dim+ on the collector pin (shown top left in video). So, if it doesn't work quite like you expected, try flipping your dim wires on your opto output!

Does this work coupled with light sensors? For instance, in a light deprivation greenhouse where lights are used to supplement the sun. So the light sensors would measure the light coming in and brighten and dim the lights appropriately in real-time to try and keep a steady level of light at the canopy throughout the day.

Maybe add another temp_target input number, use one to set your target when lights are on, the other when lights are off, then you tell node red which one to use based on the state of your lights.

The esp disconnects (becomes unavailable) and when it gets online again the dimming is turned off (so the lights stay dark) :( Any solution what could be wrong here? This is exactly what i have been searching for over the last few days. The newer Spiderfarmer SF2000 & SF4000 uses the XLG-240-H-AB drivers. Based on the spec sheet, it looks like your setup will work with these as well. I know the raspberry pi can do PWM signals. Can this be used in place of the ESP? I already run multiple pi's with relays in my greenhouse. Would like to stay with that hardware if possible.

@LEDGardener
@LEDGardener 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah for sure, you can set up a Pi pin to do PWM in the same way. Voltage will be the same so the same 100 ohm resistor should work. Just set your GPIO pin up for the same 1220 Hz frequency (or close to it) and then find a way to change the duty cycle and that will control your dim. Might want to invert it as well.

You can just set up an automation that triggers every 30 seconds or minute or whatever and when it triggers, it checks pH and if it’s out of range, it either doses a little blast up or down. The $50m dollar question is...can you swap out an "A" MW for a "B"?

So 50% is still too much. Does the B type drop to 10%?

So here's my thing about this. Most of the LED lights have a port to daisy chain them together. SO why not just use that port to interface with the driver?

Thought the same thing but I also have lights that don’t have that port

Can I use the same code for my ESP32 as you have with this driver? img80002871.weyesimg.com/uploads/mosopower.cn/addon/15736278104243.pdf I believe I can, but the only thing I don't get is where the 1220hz frequency comes from. Thank you so much for making these videos!

Looks to me like that driver should work fine with this method (seems like it has the same 3-in-1 dimming where it sources power on the dim circuit). The PWM frequency spec on the data sheet is 200Hz to 2000Hz so 1220 is fine.

@@LEDGardener Thank you so much, I just tried it and it's working to dim up and down! Very exciting I'm learning so much following your project. Interestingly, the driver documentation says 0-10v, but when I power the 110v up from my smart plug the light doesn't come on until I go to 6% or above on the Home Assistant light card slider, and then when I go back down to 0% it doesn't turn off, it stays at about the 5% brightness, dimming ever so slightly more if I turn the light card "off." Also, with the 1220hz, is that just the number you picked in between 200Hz and 2000Hz? Or did you choose it based on electrical maths and the dimmer you were using? I was going to try and hook up a AC Infinity Cloudline S4 the way you had hacked the PWM on your AC Infinity PWM fan, and saw the different Hz in your github code you mentioned with regard to the different channels on the ESP32 you talked about in the video. Thanks again!

@@fantasticplastic6170 this page will answer many of your questions: esphome.io/components/output/ledc.html the 1220Hz is one of the recommended frequencies on the list and fits within the spec for most lights. Regarding the light not turning off completely, what happens if you short the 2 dim leads together? Does it turn off? You can set up thresholds for min_power and max_power which might help for the turn on/turn off issues. Check out this page for more info on these: esphome.io/components/output/index.html I picked different frequencies for the fan control based on the freqs I measured when using the default controller it comes with. The new AC Infinity fans are even easier to control as they have actual PWM inputs you can use. The wiring is a bit different. I'm using these new S-series fans in my system now.

@@LEDGardener When I short the wires the light stays completely off. Does that mean my ESP32 is leaking very slight amounts of power to the output pin after it's energized the first time, so when I go to turn it back off again it never goes low enough to completely turn off the diode on the optocoupler? If the min_power defaults to 0 what would I set it to in order to use that to correct the issue, or am I trying the zero_means_zero command? Right now I have two Flows going, where the light smartplug turns on 1 minute before the PWM starts to ramp up and one minute after it finishes ramping down, so it works fine, but I'd love to figure out why it's behaving like it is. Thank you for the links, and for taking the time to answer questions! I definitely understand the frequency thing better now I think, and am going to try and hook up the fan next and ramp it up and down based on temp or humidity based on what I learned here and in the humidity control video

Strange. Does reversing the dim wires on the driver have any effect? I was thinking you could set up the min_power to eliminate the first few percent not turning on the light from the off state, and then doing the zero_means_zero thing.
