We spent a cloudy rainy day installing a automatic chicken door opener for our new hen house.
This is where we got Automatic Chicken Door:
www.amazon.com/VEVOR-Kits-Chi...
Be sure to check out OMG merchandise at:
teespring.com/stores/ozark-mo...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the chicken door I installed. There seems to be a lot more
out there to purchase that are of higher quality but at a high cost.
I did notice that when temps are cold like freezing the actuator (the deal that raises the door) seems to lag. Sometimes causing the door not to open and close all the way. I wrapped mine with a 3' heat tape that comes on at 45 deg to stop this from happening.

@@OzarkMountainGoats I heard that if you have chicken or sheep that having a lama is way better. They eat the same stuff that chickens and sheep do plus the health issues are also about the same. They are a pack animal. They are also taller and can see better at greater distances. Their poop is also much more manageable and usable. The very best thing tho is that they are not as loud. I am speaking from a research level no actual experience. I was all set to buy a llama but some dogs got through the fence, my two sheep I just purchased were in, and killed them. I wish the LLama was ordered before the sheep came. Sigh

My searching has ended, Thanks So Much for your video. I found this similar Vevor kit on Amazon for under 120 and it works as advertised with fobs included(batteries sold separately). I hooked mine up to a 10 watt solar panel and battery rig. I made a larger door from an old STOP sign and installed the door sideways. I get to sleep late in the AM again, Yippy! I also used plastic screws on the powerful actuator that will break off if the sensor fails and a bird gets in the way. Also we don't get snow here, just snow birds. This system could be a problem for some folks up North.

In the winter I taped a heat tape to the actuator because when it gets (in the low 30s ) it slows down. With the heat tape it works great. After about a year the electric eye at the end of cable stopped working. I bought 12 cheap eye sensors on eBay and it works perfect again. Have a great day!

Great on over framing that door... Me Likey!! I generally don't like the "store bought" door kits, but this one I like. Not so much the actual door. It's a bit thin and not tall enough. The width is OK. I have a setup that does the same thing (safety feature) but it is done with just relays, no other electronics. Well except for the Timers or Photocell modules.

It doesn't come with one but it works off of 12volt DC it would be easy to have a battery back up. Or you could do as I did and put in a manual door on another wall just in case. The other door leads to a completely enclosed pen they will use when they are young. Thanks for checking it out!

I have bought the exact same one but my door is bigger cause of my turkeys. I was hoping you would show how to attach the long opener since it’s flat on one side. At the bottom of the box it has gaps where the wires come out. Moisture get in? Or did you fill something in it? I guess I was hopping to get a look at some detailed things.
@OzarkMountainGoats

My box was mounted on the inside of chicken house so I didn't have to worry about gaps. If your mounting on the outside of house I would use a little silicone. I hooked up rod to door and then turned on power and opened the door completely then unhooked power. It will stay extended! Then I knew where to mount the upper screws on the top bracket of rod piston. Hope this helps, if not send another message. Thanks Jim

I have one of these, mine has the timer though that has a clock and you set the times you want it to open and close. The remotes on mine were already paired, but there should be a button on the controller that you push, a red light comes on, then you simply push the remote open and close buttons.

Hi, I have a quick question regarding modes. If i set the timer for 6:00 open and 23:00 close. What will happen if I close it at 20:00? Will it remain closed until next morning 6:00? Another unit reopens after 3 mins .. I'm hoping this unit stays closed when i manually overnight it when i close the door. Preferably i would prefer to only have a open time and no close time, as i would like to close it manually each night.

Your door is upside down. If you flip it bolt down the actuator arm doesn’t have to be that high.
@OzarkMountainGoats
@OzarkMountainGoats 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct about being higher. The reason I did that is because in the winter the actuator gets slow and sluggish. So I wrap it with heat tape so that it will function properly and is out of the way of door. Thanks for comment, Jim

@@OzarkMountainGoats Thanks for the Video. I live in Vermont and I'm shopping for an automatic door for my Duck coop. I'm looking at this one as it has a door that's big enough to accommodate the Pekin variety. Given we routinely see -20 in the winter, do you have any other problems with the actuator in cold weather? Any problems with ice jambs etc? Do you have to wrap the entire arm and motor with tape? Thanks

@@SkyHigh8800 no I just ran a short heat tape down one side and covered with metal duct tape I picked up on Amazon. The tracks are on inside and outside coop has tarp over it. Yes depending on your overhead area it will work either way. As long as you allow for all the open and closing stroke it doesn’t matter. If you do a seach on these type of products you will find that most show in pics the connection at the bottom of lower part section of door. Since this video I have moved chicken door to a different part of chicken house and because of head space I used the lower section hook.Thanks for your comment!

There are substances, some synthetic, some all natural, that mice hate and just plain taste bad. Like Fig plant "juice" not from the a ripe fig but a green unripe figs and the leafs and stems. Stuff like that that will not break down the insulation. If you are that worried you can us that. Or get some metal flex conduit.
