Those prices are completely eye watering. As an auto driver, I do very much get the logic behind your thinking on the increased claims. They are insanely easy to drive. I've found trying to drive as economically as possible in my EV gets me thinking way ahead and driving very smoothly. If you're just hitting the gas and zooming off though, I can definitely see things getting missed and forgotten more than they should.

For those that don't mind taking an extra risk, getting a few years on the road on the 50 or 125cc motorbike or a moped could be a good way to save money on your first car insurance. I was able to move my 4 years NCB from the motorbike policy to insure a 12 year old Mercedes A150 for about £500. It was a bit of a hunt to find an insurer that would accept the NCB, but well worth it, as I've saved about £1000 on the first year of policy.

It is also good for reducing the cost of learning to drive. I rode a 125cc for a year before learning to drive and my instructor said it knocked 15 or 20 hours off of the number of lessons I needed. You're vulnerable so your roadcraft and observation skills tend to be enhanced.

I think its age . Pure and simple. I passed my automatic driving test in the last year. I'm in my 50's . Family circumstances meant I had to have access to a car . So my thought process was that it would actually be safer to go automatic seeing as being 'older I won't have muscle memory of decades of actual driving. I live in the NE of England. Have a decent job After passing I purchased a nearly new 2023 Small Hatchback 1Ltr 110hp auto , with all the gizmos. at 19k I was expecting some eye watering insurance .( fully comp ) . But to my surprise it wasn't bad at all. So much so I had to triple check all the information I provided to make sure I hadn't unwittingly made a balls up ..But no. My insurer informed me my age ( old ) meant even though I was an auto , a new driver the number was correct . my insurance came in under a grand. So yeah being a middle aged fart is the key apparently :D . Oh and I can't recommend this channel enough . It one of the best to use on your journey to passing your test ( as well as your instructor of course) .

The policy is held in my mum's name, however, I am listed as the main driver, this is possible with tesco black box insurance at least, we asked them if we could do this, they explained it was fully okay. I got my licence (manual) recently, the insurance for me was around £800 on a 6 yrs old automatic car. No other drivers named on the policy. I think the biggest factors are age and location, I'm in my 30s and in live in a small town. I bet insurance for under 20s in London is the most expensive. £3000+ is crazy though. I think the fact that fully comp is no difference or even cheaper is a big indicator how messed up is the situation. Your first car might only be worth a few thousand, but a lot of other cars around you are super expensive (especially in London). The insurance prices reflect the stupid high rate of increase in the cost of the average new car lately, but the underlying greed is double for the insurance as the insurance companies have to make the extra profit too despite the increased claim amounts.

Another really interesting video Richard. Something you didn't talk about that I found out very recently when I was looking around at nearly new used cars is that many car manufacturers only produce cars with automatic transmission. This has happened very quickly within approximately the last two years. I can only assume that this is to prepare all of us for driving electric vehicles which are only ever automatic due to the way they work. This means that if you want to buy a very modern car you are likely to find you can only get it as an automatic now.

When I passed my test a few years ago, insuring a 2L engine Saab would cost me less than half of a 1L Corsa or equivalent small car. Also the total cost (car+insurance) would have been lower. I ended up with a different car somewhere in the middle. The car itself plays into the price as well. Because a lot of fresh drivers in the UK has Corsa or similar car, and those generate more claims, you end up in the same bracket instantly. Car, where you live, where you park, commuting and if you put down you're single.

Counterpoint: Lots of 'older' drivers tend towards automatics, older drivers (we are talking like 70 - 80yr olds) are more likely to have an accident (scrapes and bumps - even if no one else is involved). So that does skew the figures of 'more claims for automatic cars'. All EVs are automatic with a big push towards phasing out ICE cars means more and more cars will be automatic, eventually all of them. Insurance prices have always been insane, even 10+ yrs ago Top Gear made a thing about it but it does seem to have gone through the roof in the last few years for sure.

I was going to comment on the 67 horsepower Toyota Aygo. And I guess I still am, just in a different way. I have a '93 Geo Tracker, 1.6 L i4, makes 80 HP from factory. Only thing is, I live in Colorado, and I just looked up how much the power drop for a NA engine is at this altitude, and it turns out it's around 18%. Which means my car actually makes around 66 HP. I can agree with your assessment that it's about the minimum amount of power that's usable in a car. I basically drive full throttle all the time, and how fast I want to accelerate is determined by how much I let it rev out. The power drop also explains the atrocious 0-60 times. I did a test once and found it was around 21 seconds to 60 mph, substantially slower than the 14s numbers I'd found online.

As a new driver I was looking to insure an old Corsa, on my solo policy the cheapest I was quoted was £3000+ fully comp per year. Decided to get it on my Mum's insurance and that's less that £1000 per year! It's absolute robbery 😮‍💨 so glad I was able to get it as a joint insurance account through my mum. I have a manual licence and have my own manual car now, glad I decided to do manual learning, I'd hate to not have the manual car experience.

What do you mean by 'joint insurance account'? If your mother was listed as the policy holder and main driver and you as a second driver you were 'fronting' which is technically fraud. In practice it's all fine until you have an accident, the insurer investigates and leaves you holding the bag for the cost of damage to the 3rd party's vehicle. I'm not trying to lecture, it's the advice from someone who did exactly the same and learnt the hard way when he was 18 in the early 2000's.

I understand the reasoning why insurance is higher, though it shouldn't be that much higher, this does affect people who's only option would be to learn automatic or not drive; such as people with disabilities that may make it hard or near impossible to reliably shift gears safely. Some people will definitely pick the automatic to pass faster like you said but this and their overall poorer driving has a knock on affect to people who's only choice to be able to drive might be an automatic instead of manual. Its just an unfortunate situation. Thank you for the tip on how to lower the cost of automatic insurance that will come in handy for many I am sure.

Absolutely astonishing prices! Brilliant video Richard, as always. What will this all do to folk passing their tests in electrics now and in the future? They're automatic aren't they? Or are they as they don't have 'gearboxes'? You only have to look at the internet videos of people crashing overseas and I bet 99% will be autos. Not in the UK obviously.

I completely agree with what you’ve said in this video. I’ve learned in a manual but I’m taking my test in my own car, which is an electric, ie; automatic so I’ll have an auto license and it bugs me. I do plan ahead still but I know I don’t have to. But there are reasons and I think it is another reason why auto license holders might be more likely to claim. I’m disabled and struggle to change gear, an automatic car makes it easier for me to drive. It also makes me a higher risk driver. And so more likely to claim 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's also possible auto sales are higher than stick shift, therefore more claims. In Australia, we get a lot " Autos for the price of a manual " this is because it's not worth it for the dealer to bring in manual. When I came to the UK, I paid a penalty on insurance as I held a Western Australian licence and not driven in UK. I have a manual heavy rigid licence. I understand your point of view on auto. Also one of my jobs ( not truck) because we drove between customers they rated our crash rate 9 times normal driving.

I passed in an automatic, mostly because my mum drives auto and most of my driving was private practice with her and also because I feel safer and I enjoy it more. I agree, insurance is more expensive but it is easy to find a car, automatic cars have been around for a while now so you can find a cheap lil automatic. I think it comes down to personal preference, people seem to be quite aggressive and weirdly passionate about the fact I passed in an automatic, saying I can't really drive. To me most of driving is the road and planning ahead and paying attention to hazards, not whether or not I'm controlling the gears.

I just found out how insane UK insurance is. In my EU Country my girlfriend just bought her first car. It's a 2013 manual Toyota. The mandatory insurance and a few basic add-ons was quoted at around 230-300€. The policy is tied to the car and paid by the owner - anyone can drive that car under the owner's insurance and they'll be covered. She put her mom as the owner of the car, it came down to 70-140€. Mind you, those prices are per year, not monthly. Also, the only thing they want to know is your name, date of birth, car info and whether you've made an insurance claim in the past or not. It seems insane to me that car insurance would demand to know your working status, workplace or even salary in order to cover you. I also don't understand voluntary excess if there's mandatory excess... like, why would I voluntarily disclose how much I'm willing to pay on top? Just give me the mandatory part and I'll pay that.

A major factor I found after doing 100s of quotes for all different types of cars (fully comp with parents as named drivers and 5000 miles) was what date you selected. If you look online, you’ll see a lot of sites that say about 3 weeks is optimal. This was not the case. Going through 30 days in advance, I found that about 8 or 9 days was the cheapest for some reason. Also, look to see if your parent’s car insurer has a multi car discount. This saved me an additional £200. Insurance will also go down a little bit once you’ve passed your test and you can actually input your driving license number, as well as decreasing some more when you own the vehicle.

When I passed my test in November 2021 in a automatic (after failing in June in a manual) I finally got enough money to buy my first car in March 2022 and to insure it was crazy. Ok I was 54 at the time but insuring a 1.0 litre car was only £50 less than insuring a 2.0i with 149hp. It cost me £949 for SDP fully comp, 12 months later with 1 year no claims the same insurer wanted over £1,400. Going online for a comparison I got it for £749. This year we bought a newer car (2018 1.5T) with all the safety features you can think of,but insuring it even with 2 years no claims it cost us £1400. I guess it won’t be for a further three years before prices will start to drop

Driving a hybrid car feels like driving a manual since you're always planning ahead to squeeze out more fuel. I am a manual driver but while I was on automatic I realised that I was less focused since the car just works whereas when I'm driving manual I am forced to pay attention otherwise the car will stall. An imperfect workaround that I found is the use the dual clutch gearbox manually so if I am not controlling the gears the car would sound like a tractor and notify me if I'm dozed off. Honestly dozing off doesn't happen often but in the manual it would never happen.

The claim amount has a much more significant impact than the claim frequency. Third-party insurance is more expensive because it's the other party who dictates the claim amount. They don't have the incentive of choosing a cheaper repair shop. Comprehensive is cheaper because the owner repairs the car and then claims for reimbursements. This way car shops have no way of knowing the insurance will pay for it and jacking up the prices.
