In this video I explain the CAN-BUS diagnosis step by step. I have a car for this video that has a major CAN-BUS problem, so my scan tool cannot communicate with multiple control units (Engine, Transmission, ABS, A/C, ..), so I explain how to start the diagnosis on the CAN-BUS from the more accessible points to find the problem. I explain how to test the CAN-BUS resistance, how to test the CAN-BUS voltage, how to test it for the short to ground, then how to narrow it down to isolate the problem area for finding it easier. I also explain the CAN-BUS wiring diagram.

This is impressive. Today i changed the gateway module of vw tiguan tsi which is not communicate with all the modules except instrument cluster.

Hmmm, decent test plan, but it is 2024; invest in some tools and equipment, e.g., Breakout Test Lead, OBDII Breakout Box, Oscilloscope… I have seen too many misdiagnoses when individuals use the basic test leads that come with the Multimeters. I had a GM Tech trying to convince me that a VVT Solenoid was bad based on the resistance he performed. The test lead probes were unstable in the Connector Cavity when demonstrating the resistance test. The readings fluctuated, so he was under the impression the solenoid was bad until I used some of my breakout test leads and scope in resistance mode, demonstrated the resistance was within the desired range, and corrected the engine oil level, which resolved the concern.

Another excellent video. At 2:27 why does the diagram show PCM and ECM usually they are the same thing.

Hi my friend. Normally ECM refers to Engine Control Module only, and PCM refers to ECM+TCM. So wiring diagram technically covers both cars with automatic transmission (that we must look at PCM on the diagram) and those cars with manual transmission (that we must look at ECM on diagram).

Yes, on many cases we have to use the scope to diagnose the CAN-BUS as resistance and voltage inspection might not be helpful. What I am wondering: in both cases (using a DVOM or a scope), would the outcome be the same: locate a failing module or issue in wiring and then either replace/rebuild the module or fix the wiring. If that is the case, why bother with a scope, if a DVOM will be able to locate a failing module or wiring issue. I am not trying to be contradictory, just trying to learn. So umm... How did you repair that wire? That would have been interesting to see being it's a data wire

Hi there, luckily there was only a minor issue on the wiring insulation not on the wire itself, so very easy to fix. But in case of having any damage on the wiring on the CAN-Bus, I never do soldering, as I do on the normal wiring, I rather to replace the wire between two ends.

What program do you use for electrical diagrams?

For this one I used KIA GDS which is the OEM scan tool which comes with all diagrams, but we have some wiring diagrams in PDF and will provide them to everyone very soon.
