I really like the Ortovox DIRACT VOICE device. I know it doesn't have the range of some other models but for the average person, it's a great device with 3 antennas, and the voice directions etc. I like it because it's not complicated to get used to using it. I'm sure you've seen it by now. I'm wondering your thoughts on it. Like I said, I think it's very user friendly and works great. But I haven't used anywhere near as many as you have. But Ortovox in general IMHO makes solid gear and I think this was a great innovation on their part.

Yes, the Diract Voice is a great transceive and we actually wrote a full review of it here: www.backcountryskiingcanada.com/Ortovox-Diract-Voice-Transceiver It is a little more expensive but worth every penny if you want an easy to use transceiver. It is by no means perfect and we made a few recommendation on how it could be improved so be sure to read the review!

Nice Review, However you forgot to mention on the tracker 2 you can use SP mode (special) and it will suppress that closer signal and narrow down the range , now your transceiver will only pickup signal straight ahead so you have to turn 360degrees till it picks it up and move toward the other one. Not the greatest for multiple burials but it does work with practice . Cheers

Thanks John, great input. Yes, the "S" or "special" mode simply reduces the range in which a signal can be detected, not as good as masking or marking a signal but it does work. BCA says that they do this because a very high percentage of searches are for one subject and that a mark function complicated things for most people new to using a tranceiver so they try to keep it simple. Not sure if I aggree, but that's why they do it.

Great thanks ! I have the Baryvox Element (2017 model), has mark and group test included and I have it tested by the manufacturer every 2 or 3 years. At some point there was a function on some models displaying if the transceiver's holder still had a heart beat, to help triaging... not sure if this was very accurate though. Is it still being developed? You didn't mention it..

I didn't mention it because so many transceivers have different functions it would take an a couple of hours to go over them all. This video is an overview. I really like the Element. I've never played around with the function you are asking about so I'm not going to comment. The Barryvox monitors heart rate and can apprenenly communicate whether or not the person buried is alive. I don't know if I trust it fully but it's hard to run a test!

The most underrated tranceiver - Arva (neo and evo). Similar functionality as mammut.

That's what a lot of people are saying, we'll see how that plays out. BCA does make an easy to use transceiver, that's for sure.

Hi, as the video is 3 years old, do you still use the Barryvox S and did you have any issues with it ? I'm thinking of buying one to replace my old Arva

Hi Jean Micheal, even though the transceiver is 3 yrs old now it is still a solid unit and very popular. I don't think you can go wrong with the Barryvox S.

MY FAVORITE TRANSCEIVER:BCA TRACKER 2&BCA TRACKER 3.AS FAR AS RANGE THE T2 HAS PICKED UP OTHER TRANSCEIVERS AT 56-62 METERS ON A REGULAR BASIS,NO PROBLEM BUT DOESN'T HAVE ALOT OF FETURS THE T3 HAS BUT I WOULD RECAMEND IT TO ANYONE.

JUSTIN,NICE VIDEO BUT SOME OF YOUR IMFOMATION IS INCORRECT.I OWN 9 AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVERS,2 ORTOVOX F1FOCUS good working order,2 "ORIGINAL"BCA TRACKER DTS(one with owners manual)THEY BOTH WORK GOOD,NO DRIFTING OFF FREQUENCY,55M RANGE,AUDIO COULD USE SOME IMPROVEMENT BUT SPEAKER IS PRETTY SMALL.ALSO OWN A BCA TS,T3 AND MAYBE A T4.TOOK A LEVEL 1&2 AVALANCHE COARSE BACK IN 1998 BUT LEARNED FROM ANALOG F1FOCUS(GRID PATTERN).THEN I WAS INTRODUCED TO THE BCA TRACKER DTS,TOOK ME A WHILE TO ADAPT OVER.WOULD I GO TO THE B C WITH A TRACKER DTS,YOU BET I WOULD BUT WITH ONE OF MINE,NOT THE 2 ORIGINAL ONE'S BUT THE 2 WITH THE BIG RED BUTTONS OR MY T2 THAT CAN PICK UP ON A REGULAR BASIS UP TO 59M AND I'VE HAD UP TO 62M.IT WORKS 100%PERFECT.JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS OLD DOESN'T MEAN YOU THROW IT AWAY!

Like you said,COMPLICATED, you have to go to ground school to figure it out and that's after reading the manual, what a joke. The barryvox/mammout retailes in the U.S. for $549.95.Last year it sold for $500.00.What 18-25 year old is going to go out and spend that kind of $$ when they can get a BCA TRACKER 4,lower in price,100% to the point and you don't have to go to ground school to figure it out,L.E.D. READ OUT which is easy to read on Sunny Days as well as night time.

Thanks for the input and your thoughts Craig. I think these higher-priced and more technical transceivers are not really targetted at 18-25-year-olds. Their price reflects the technology and feature set that they offer, they are meant for guides and serious backcountry skiers who may need those extra features and are willing to pay for them. The Tracker 4 is a great transceiver for the money and although it does not have near the features it is ideal for the beginner or younger skier who wants to get into ski touring.
