Hi Gaz. I also grow garlic. I cut the scapes a few weeks before harvest to allow the garlic to grow better, the soil and sun feeding the garlic instead of the scapes' flowers. Also, I cut the scapes into one-inch pieces, dry them slowly in a 200-degree oven and grind them in a coffee grinder. Result: Perfect garlic powder without any additives!!! Scapes then can be used to dress anything you are cooking such as steaks, fish, etc.. Regards, Gerry

I’m with you on the garlic. I haven’t had to buy garlic since I started planting them. Also of note, I planted asparagus 4 years ago and it comes back beautifully every year as it’s a perennial. Where I am in Canada, asparagus costs a fortune, so I feel it’s a massive cost saver.

Hi Gaz, I learned from a farmer that you can braid or make a knot to the garlic while still in the bed before harvesting (when the leaves are long and a little bit yellow) and when the leaves are all dry and completely yellow you harvest it, this is to help grow bigger bulbs. Love your channel and all the homestead videos. Greetings from Colombia 🇨🇴

I dug up about 31 heads of garlic this summer, but I must have missed something, because 3 plants are already growing out there already! lol I hope the harvested bulbs keep well for me. I bought my first garlic 12 years ago and since then never again. Every year I save the largest gloves and put them back into the ground at the beginning of October. This year for the 13th time. I also dry my own garlic, which I use from February until the fresh garlic is harvested. Because in the new year the gloves always start to grow and become softer.

Wow! The garlic bread looks just perfect! I need to try out that one. I'm planting winter garlic the first time this year but the weather has been so warm that I've been hesitating to plant the cloves yet. I don't want them to start grow now and then immediate die when it becomes cold and the snow falls. Maybe I'll wait until the day temperatures drops under 20 degrees. Nights are already quite cool (something between 9-13 degrees) here in Hokkaido.
