Hey Jake! I commented on one of your other videos some time ago, mentioning that I was going to build my own Turbine Sprayer. Well I was at the ole' Harbor Freight today and they had an open box avanti, just missing the hoses and tip wrench, for $245! So, it came home with me. Works great! I have some questions with it. I watched your video on dialing in the gun, so I have a good starting point. Do you monitor or regulate the PSI on the Avanti gun at all via a gauge? Wondering if you have preferred PSIs for spraying primer vs base vs clear. Goal is to reduce waste as much as possible! I will be getting the Apollo guns you recommended eventually. I've never sprayed with a gun before, let alone with a Turbine, so I want to learn on the Avanti equipment first! I did horse around with it with what little bit of automotive paint I did have laying around (test samples of the colors I picked for my C600 Cabover) and I'm blown away by the lack of overspray. I held my test panel still with my bare hands and didn't get a single drop of paint on me!

That's a great deal at HB. When I'm spraying I don't regulate air pressure at the machine - but at the Avanti spray gun fan control dial at the back of the spray gun. I call the dial an air choker and adjusting it will reduce the working air flow pressure (psi). The adjustment is designed to reduce the spray fan width, but sometimes it can reduce the needed air pressure to atomize certain paint materials like thicker primer. And the result will be more texture. Also check out my other channel "Turbine Sprayer" I go into more depth on spraying topics and spraying sessions. The Avanti gun will consume about 3psi when trigger is pulled and the flow pressure will drop, but it works because the machine pressure is a 5 stage. Check out the spraying with water video topic ep2 on other channel.

Awesome video!!! Have seen some people say it overheats, and I'm curious if that's been fixed since those reports. I remember a prior video of yours taking temps and will go revisit that now...but any color you'd be willing to add here would be greatly appreciated, as always!

I've done some other testing with the Avanti and it's holding up well. I'm not experiencing any heat issues, but turbine machines all produce heat during use. I turn mine off when I'm not spraying between coats. Turbine machines continue to produce volumes of air when the spray trigger is not pulled and that produced air needs to go somewhere - aka bleed port. I took mine apart and looked at all the bleed port flow designs and it looks legit. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Do you think the avanti 3-stage sprayer would be ok for auto paint as well?
@JakeLesada
@JakeLesada 6 ай бұрын
I haven't tried the Avanti 3 Stage. But, generally more stages in a turbine can provide more air to atomize auto paint material better; you'll have an easier time atomizing high solids primers and clear coats - without having to rely on over reducing (thinning) the paint so it will flow and atomize. A 3 stage turbine could work but it wouldn't be an ideal setup.

Hey. Great video. What city are you in? So I just saw a video on someone testing the titan 110 pump with a psi gauge 0-20. The pump goes up to 11psi until you pull the trigger and drops to 6-7psi. The guy said the Apollo pump is the only one that doesn’t drop pressure but for some reason he didn’t show the psi gauge on the video. So when you do get a chance to hook up a psi gauge and test the Apollo and the Avanti do it with the same gun. Just a thought. Happy 2024.

I found a couple of pressure gauges I can use to mod up a pressure test. I'll test with the same spray gun - great suggestion. Happy 2024.

Why Avanti . You used to use apollo system. What happeed
@JakeLesada
@JakeLesada 5 ай бұрын
I still use Apollo. It started when one of my callers wanted to know if there was an inexpensive turbine spray gun available for less than $100 dollars. He sprays Dap sprayable contact cement and didn't want to use his Apollo spray gun. He mentioned Harbor Freight and asked me if I thought their replacement Avanti turbine spray gun could work. I went to HB bought one of their replacement Avanti spray guns for $79.00 and did my testing with regular Dap contact cement. You can watch the video on the beginning Avanti series. I also saw the Avanti 5 stage turbine and said no way they have that now, so days later I decided to check it out and do a proper unbox video. Now I can compare both systems, find out the advantages and disadvantages to each, and give helpful feed back to those starting out with turbine spraying. Plus, I can apply all my "mods" to either system and make my improvements. In the next couple days, after I post my "Wok Station at Home" video, you'll see my next turbine spraying video on my "soft edge masking MOD". I made a soft edge masking tool using a 3M PPS paint cap plug. In that video I'm prepping to spray fender jams at 5.5psi using the Apollo system with my Futuristic Spray gun mod. And, in case you are wondering why use the Apollo for the fender jams? The Apollo can be set to 5.5psi for 1:1 mix automotive base coat and all day long - 5.5psi saves paint, and is an ideal setting for 1:1 mix automotive base coat. The Avanti at a higher set psi can be turned down at the spray gun, but it loses some atomization air and with a higher psi, it does consume more paint than necessary. Also, I'll "up coat" to 6.0psi for final orientation on some metallics, vs a "drop coat". If you watch this Avanti video again, you'll notice I say "I need more air", the reason is, I've reduced the Avanti spray gun to use less primer - but I wasn't getting the atomization I needed. What I don't know, "I don't know" so, I experiment. Thank you for watching and commenting.

What’s the purpose of the faucet mod inside the liner?
@JakeLesada
@JakeLesada 7 ай бұрын
The faucet mod helps prevent the sandwich bag liners from going up into the 3M adapter and it also helps paint material flow easier. My first experiments, I used different brands of sandwich bags by themselves and with only the liner lids - without the original liners. I hadn't used the faucet mod yet and I noticed the sandwich bags got sucked up a little into the adaptor. The reason this was happening was I removed the mesh filter in the liner lid - this allowed for me to clean the lid for reuse, but without the mesh filter the sandwich bag got sucked up a little into the 3M adapter. My current mod, I'm using the original liner as you see in the video with the sandwich bag mod. Next, I'm going to experiment without the faucet mod installed - but with the original liner and sandwich bag mod together, and I'll see how that goes. The original liners - when they get pressurized in the 3M pressured cup - the original liners rotate as they empty and they don't go up into the 3M adapter - the 3M plastic material is also thicker than the sandwich bags. I tried using thicker sandwich bags, but they didn't seal as well because they got bunched up around the rim of the cover and 3M pressure cup. It was a mess. I noticed using the cheapest, thinnest sandwich bags worked better because they could compress to empty easier than the thicker sandwich bags.

Can either one of the Black Widows from harbor freight work with the Avanti?
@JakeLesada
@JakeLesada 6 ай бұрын
Technically no, those type of spray guns are designed for air compressor type psi air pressure. The Black Widow HVLP spray gun operates at around 12.4CFM@28 PSI. The Avanti 5 stage maximum sealed air pressure is around 9.5psi. There is also air bleed from the turbine, (this helps with turbine longevity) and the Avanti actual dynamic air pressure is lower with the air bleed. I air gauged it and it's around 8 psi - 8.5 psi. Also, with the trigger pulled, spraying pressures will drop, and depending on which turbine spray gun brand you are using, it could vary from 1psi or more. The Avanti turbine spray gun drops the spraying pressure about 3 psi when the trigger is pulled. The hose connection fittings are also different - turbine spraying equipment have larger fittings to allow a larger amount of air CFM (cubic feet per minute) to flow through the spray gun at lower air psi pressure. The hose id (inside diameter) is also larger for turbine spraying equipment. Hope this helps, and thank you for watching and commenting.

How does this compare to the earlex spray port 6003?
@JakeLesada
@JakeLesada 5 ай бұрын
I read up on the Earlex 6003 and spoke to the tech rep, it's a 3 stage turbine non - bleed unit so it technically doesn't compare to the Avanti 5 stage turbine. And here is why, the Avanti 5 stage is a bleeder type turbine unit - air bleeds off through the air bleed port in the back and also inside the Avanti unit there is a small secondary bleed on the factory adjusted psi setting valve. I took mine apart and air gauged it to see how it works. Also, the difference between a 3 stage turbine and a 5 stage turbine is the amount of internal fans within the turbine shell. The more fans in a turbine potentially means more output - in CFM (cubic feet per minute) and greater PSI air pressure value. The Earlex 6003 output - from speaking to the tech rep says its output is 5.5 psi. Here is something you'll also have to consider when using any turbine sprayer, different turbine spray guns will have less or more air consumption when the trigger is pulled. When the spray gun trigger is pulled you'll get air psi drop, and that is because air is flowing through the spray gun to atomize the paint material. I tested the Avanti turbine spray gun, and it drops about 3psi. I also tested with my Apollo turbine spray gun and it only drops about 1psi. The choice can be made by determining which type of paint materials and how much paint thinning you'll be doing when painting projects. Thick paint material needs more power or more paint thinning to atomize properly. As a general consideration - heat is also a major factor with turbine units, some manufacturers put more into their designs to alleviate the heat generated from the turbine use. External box fans can be placed near the machines to help with cooling too. When making your choice, determine what type of viscosity paint you'll be spraying and the budget to get your job done. Hope this helps, and thank you so much for watching and commenting.
