If we couldn't get "Avatars Attack," they should have at least kept this in to show the more hated villain being put in his place. Aw well, at least we're able to see it now.
Avatar belongs to 20th Century Fox and Lightning Storm Entertainment.

I remember acting in this scene. I'm the guy that says "I wouldn't do that Sir" and then gets fired. I looked forward so long to seeing this in the final edit of the movie, and was shattered when I didn't see it, at the time of shooting, I was told this was a very important scene in the movie. I was auditioned on the spot by James Cameron, it was an awesome experience.

Wow. I’m happy to hear from you but also so sorry for you at the same time. When I went to the theater to see the rereleased Extended Cut, I was hoping so hard that either this scene or “Avatars Attack” would be in it because Selfridge needed to get his humiliation closure. But I’m glad to hear your story and now others can too.

i'm feeling almost sorry for Parker. the guy came here to supervise a mining mission with maybe a side of border violence that he didn't necessay think he would take part in. he may have been annoyed by Grace but he did allow her the research. he also alowed the Hometree destruction but only when Quaritch promissed to start with dispersing people before the attack itself. he even gave the team 1 hour extra time once he got the dude off his neck. He sure as hell wasn't an environmentalist, but even a money motivated prick like him understands that a military putch and a genocide are bad. i wouldn't be surpised if in the 2nd movie it turned out that while everyone was out there fighting he was making some important calls with his higher ups back on Earth. would they listen to him and persecute those who return back home? who knows. but the dude has enough pride to make their life as difficult as he possibly can with the limited power he has.

Yeah, they really should've kept this scene. (From what I remember) in the movie it seems like Parker and Quaritch are on the same page. However, this scene shows that Quaritch is basically insane and taking over the entire operation. Really dumb to cut this one. Perhaps I'm mistaken and there were still scene(s) that showed this, but I don't think so.

Why did they left this out? This scene gives a deeper look into the characters of both Parker and Quaritch. Especially Parker. His actions in this scene goes well with his look of horror when the Hometree was destroyed.
@patmos09

I'd say because it shows that large numbers of the soldiers wiped out gleefully by the Navi were just miners and refinery workers coaxed into fighting by the villain. Seeing the mercenaries get wrecked was fine but cheering as a flying dinosaur rips apart some innocent forklift operator who was told he was fighting for his survival would leave a bad taste in peoples mouths. At the same time, it reduces the sense of threat. In the final film it looks like the heroes are up against a well equipped army. This scene depicts them as incredibly limited on ammunition and manpower, largely composed of untrained militia and further emphasizes their desperate use of improvised explosives.
@gilbertobm
@gilbertobm 4 жыл бұрын
Because then the environmental moral of the story would've been lost. In the original version is a critique on american coroporativism, militarism, colonialism and lack of environmental sensitivity. With this scene, the villain is no longer collective, but a single individual that went rogue.

definitely should've kept it in the final cut, partly because it helped to humanize Parker a bit more. this, combined with the look of horror on his face when Hometree was destroyed sold the whole "my god what have I done/I'm way over my head" epiphany he had. unfortunately by that point it was far too late and Quaritch had effectively staged his coup. Parker was a pencil pusher, all about the company's bottom line, but even he had a shred of humanity when it came down to it

Exactly, he's very much about convincing the Na'vi to move so he can strip mine, but he's not into extermination and killing. He's fine with the guns around for defending the mining operation but not to actively go out of their way to bomb the Na'vi to bits.

Generally Hollywood movies, let alone blockbusters, do not favor any nuance to the characters, especially villains. Realistically, Quaritch shouldn't be oozing 'evil', either but should be quite justifiable from his POV.
@marccamp6376
@marccamp6376 4 жыл бұрын
@@MasterUxi I think the same, actually my fav character is Quaritch, is so disciplined, has a strong personality and also huge intelligence. I think he is kind of "out of context", I saw other war and scifi scenarios like Clone wars and I think Quaritch would be such an interesting hero and commander in another battlefront, figthing against the Separatists, the arachnids on klendathu, Skynet or the Matrix, not primitive Navis. In another war he would have guide humans to victory and order, but he just ended up as the villain on a primitive planet, leading a massacre of inocents. Still my fav character

@303en Exactly, "a war hero that lost the way after decades of commanding mercenaries in a non-ideoligical but corporative mission", I have thought that too. I like this scene because it shows Selfridge having a "right choice, wrong reason" mindset. He doesn't want a scorched earth response towards the Na'vi, not because it would be morally wrong, but because the loss of equipment and personnel would be bad for the bottom line. I like it when villains are complex and bad for different reasons.

@Icetea-2000
@Icetea-2000 Жыл бұрын
No he definitely felt it was wrong at least in some way, that’s why he also lets Jake enter the avatar body to warn the na'vi about the attack on the hometree. He had no objective reason to do this. He’s no military jingoist, he doesn’t want a conflict, he just wants to do his business in peace and that doesn’t make him evil. But he simply took this clear stance against quaritch way too late.
@snapgab

Also because I think he recognized that escalating things like this would result in continuous conflict with the Na'vi for years to come. Obviously he didn't expect the Na'vi to outright defeat them, but he knew it would cause problems.

This actually explains a little bit about some of Parker's facial expressions once they started to engage the Na'Vi as hostiles!! In earlier scenes he showed little to no remorse as the excavators approached their holy site....but once he saw the engagement at Home Tree you could see the concern in his face. His greed was getting the better of him earlier in regards to the unobtanium found on the Omaticaya Home tree. However, Parker had some form of humanity in him. He only wanted the Navi to leave peacefully, which was the whole point of why he gave both Jake and Grace more time to convince them. When Quatrich defied a direct order to stand down by attacking them and causing bloodshed, Parker confronted him for the deed. Because of the attack on the Navi and destroying potentially millions of dollars worth of unobtanium, he lost his trust and faith in Quatrich. Parker tried to assert his command again to force Quatrich to stand down. Unfortunately being more experienced as a soldier and a leader, he attacked Parker and usurped him as a leader.

The only reason I can imagine this was cut for is keeping the audience perspective of the “good guys” as good during the final battle. The scene specifies that a lot of these men are not mercs but miners being sent to their death by a crazed general. They probably didn’t want to build sympathy for people that get wrecked by Eywa. However it really pushes Quaritch as the main antagonist and that the battle will only end by taking him down. I also like seeing that one merc loading one of those giant knives we see Quaritch use later. Surprisingly a lot going on in this one small scene, bummer it was cut

I had a 1st sgt that acted extremely like the colonel. He wasn’t a bad guy just super gun ho. He came off extremely tough and hard, but he took care of his men. The guy was a definition of what a leader was. Professional and caring at the same time. I remember I got in a horrible accident and was rushed to the ICU. I wake up at 2 am and here is my 1st sgt in full uniform sitting next to me telling me to get better and relax no need to push yourself. He also told me no matter what your other bosses say, I’ll make you you’re given more than enough time to heal. I got you.

I guess that’s one of my problems I have with this move. My dad served in the Army and when I watched this movie with him, he said the Colonel’s behavior during the cafeteria scene between him and Jake was wrong. A soldier always chooses peace when it’s possible. They do not seek bloodshed. But the thing is, this is not the US Army, this is a PMC. He surrendered his duty to Country for money. But the American Flag imagery throughout the movie suggests Cameron is really pushing the American Imperialism angle with what happened in Vietnam and Iraq. I just hope to god that in the sequels we’ll get more human military allies, like the veterans who stood up to protect the Native Americans at Standing Rock. The Colonial Marines need to have their Honor Restored.

This scene should make it to the final cut. It shows Parker in a better light which is good because without it he's kinda like a cartoon villain. It also shifts a lot of blame from Parker to the military. Shows that Parker wasn't as bad as he seemed, there were lines he wouldn't cross. But he trusted his power too much. When he realized what's about to happen - it was no longer about him. Parker as an office guy who's only brave from behind his desk but gets screwed easily by the cruel mercenary and loses control works better IMO than the way he is in the final cut. It's a bit weird how in final cut Parker just dissapears without any explanation.
@colten53
@colten53 Жыл бұрын
It also makes Quaritch more threatening. As he points out, Parker may have the ability to fire him, but any attempt to forcibly remove him would take five years. Because he’s the strongest, he actually holds all the power in this scenario. It’s a bit like that part in The Dark Knight Rises where the guy says he paid Bane and Bane says “and you think this gives you power over me?” before killing him.

Hell's Gate Coup August 21, 2154 SecOps commander and chief of security, Colonel Miles Quaritch, along with one of his officers, Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, launched a coup d'etat against RDA civilian administrator Parker Selfridge, running Hell's Gate and RDA's operations in Pandora under a military dictatorship. It was generally described as a popular uprising. Due to Quaritch's popularity, Selfridge lost support from the Security Operations as well as from non-combat workers (Mining Operations). It holds the record for being the shortest coup attempt in the history of mankind, lasting in less than 2 minutes. The coup had been generally described as bloodless as Selfridge quickly and de facto relinquished his authority in favor of Quaritch. Quaritch would rule as leader of the Hell's Gate junta from August 21, 2154 until his death after humans' defeat in the Battle of the Tree of Souls on the 22nd of August of the same year. His vacated position would be filled 14 years later by General Frances Ardmore as commander of the Joint Expeditionary Task Force and head of RDA's base of operations in the Bridgehead.

@@53knight In the film, it shows the military guy being obedient to the cooperate guy, they also always seemed to be respectful to each other position because they're both just there to do the job. Military guy whole point of being there was simply for protection and clear space with vital resources that earth wanted. This scene really doesn't make sense because corporate guy was in all the way in to make sure Pandora's resources was collected. Yeah this scene does show his humanity but him and military guy was still under payrolls from corporate to obtain the resources. Plus they've also agreed to clear the tree as "humane" as possible even if it meant Navi causalities. As long as they're not massacre like what us humans would do to each other. If they were both at odds than it would not make sense in the film because the whole point was Navi against Humans. Once he walked in and saw how the colonel was conducting the invasion (I.E. the bombs and what not). He came to the realization of what he had just agreed to. I think it get's overlooked because it's nothing more then hamfisted justification for explaining why the human forces didn't just bomb them to hell. Also i'd disagree one the colonel using survival as an excuse, the Colonel seems paranoid throughout the film believing that conflict is both inevitable and that the nav'i pose an extreme threat which wasn't being taken seriously. I think his beliefs about survival were genuine and that is what drove him to believe they had to wipe out the nav'i. In his mind it was the only way to ensure not just the survival of the camp but the human race. From the very first meeting with sully the colonel is talking about staying strong the risk of death and describing the Nav'i as hostiles. I think in his mind this was already a war, but he was the only one who could see it.

If I’m a mine worker I won’t participate this assault but I will take a rifle to protect my wife and kids in case they overrun the base.

guess showing Parker as the actual mediator character that he is would have been too much to ask...it's insane how much Cameron and his team thinks and studies before creating these beautiful characters and then when it's actually time to execute and put a coherent story on the screen he F up big.

This scene adds so much to how big the fight actually was, why there was a pallet of explosives on the Valkyrie shuttle, and just how well-armed the soldiers were for the fight. It would've also furthered the conflict between Quaritch and Parker, because until this point it seemed like Quaritch was only serving the RDA's "bottom line" while explaining the shift in Parker's shift from only focusing on the mining to horror at making it a near-genocide of the Na'vi

Other than that huge green scene briefly visible in the background, this scene is awesome. Should totally have been included in the extended cut as it shows the clash in interests between Quaritch and Parker.

The green screen is because that's unfinished background that does not mean the scene was going to be shown that way

Why does every single movie love to delete scenes that humanize any villains even when it’s just a hint of humanity? Reminds me of the deleted Dursley scene in Harry Potter where Vernon and Dudley are packing their car and getting ready to evacuate and Dudley asks why Harry isn’t coming. Harry states “it’s cause I’m a waste of space, right, Vernon?” Vernon says nothing because that’s what he believes, so he chooses not to admit or deny the claim. Dudley looks his father in the eyes as he steps over to Harry and tells the boy he bullied all his childhood, “I don’t think you’re a waste of space.” Scenes like that are so incredibly powerful and I don’t ever understand why they’re deleted- as if every character needs to be one dimensional and just be a bad guy or a good guy.

In my opinion there’s a lot of scenes like this which make no sense as to why they were cut from the final version. A lot of complaints people have against this film is that the characters aren’t memorable but scenes like this show so much complexity to them and the story. I think cutting 1 or 2 blue people jungle scenes and replacing them with more scenes like this would have changed a lot of the perception towards the film

I think it would have had greater impact if the line was "Earth is four light years away". He'd half to wait eight years for the reply on that phone call.

dan p I think what he means is yes the phone call would be instantaneous, but as to the follow-up from earth to pandora, that would take quite the cryo-sleep.

dan p that’s not what I’m saying, yes the phone call would be instant but any consequence from earth to pandora to take quaritch out would take years to arrive.

@dan p I read that article in the lore. They made it work but it's only at the rate of three bits per hour and $7500 per bit.

This scene just further shows that Selfridge was not an "evil corperate" type....He had responsibilities to the US military, share holders and was in charge but he did not want death of natives, hence his approval of the avatar program!
