Idk I really want to like this show. The costume design is amazing, the cinematography is good and CGI is really not bad at all. The pacing is fine, and I don't mind them combining different events of multiple episodes into one episode. But the acting, oh dear lord. Idk how much you can expect from an actor at that age, but Aangs actor is extremely inexperienced and unfortunately it really shows. Katara is like an empty shell, almost robotic at times. Also they didn't hit her character features at all, she isn't fierce, she isn't motherly, she isn't jealous, she barely shows any emotion. If she didn't have so much screentime you would straight up forget she exists. Sokka is somewhat okay, but some scenes are questionable. Gotta say they absolutely hit his goofy face though. You can tell Zukos actor is really trying and I appreciate that. He is not great and not terrible. You can also tell who watched the original and who didn't. Again, I want to like this show, I think for a Netflix adaptation it's not bad. But there are a lot of issues, especially in the acting department which drag it down quite a bit. I often found myself thinking "Wow this scene was completely useless and did absolutely nothing to further the plot or develop the characters". All in all I'd say it is in fact mid. 5/10.

It boils down to all Netflix adaptations so far: They are the better disney remakes, homages to the source material, riddled with fan service, very good visual translation, but especially in case of one piece and avatar in the uncanny cosplay felling. Cowboy Bebop played in an artificial man made world, the looks were somewhat believable, but for avatar and one piece, an artificial world with no sense of scale, or an ocean that is barely ever rough on the surface, I cannot lose my mind in these. The other problem with a homage is, that in all these cases the stories tell us nothing new at all, they are visual remasters with the compromise of time and production value, some aspects like a fast pace switch between goofy emotions and serious character thoughts don't work in real life adaptations as they do in the cartoon medium. Why should I watch these for any other reason than nostalgia, what is their USP?

I watched the first 3 episodes and felt like a watched a botched version of the first series. Too much happening way too early. Its chaotic and kills the natural feels of the progression.

This show has no heart. No soul. No joy. No laughter. No playfulness. No charm.

I mean.. They killed Sokka's arc and development, cant say i expected better.

Most of the bending fight scenes looked good. I can see why they avoided the water bending scenes tho...... Ill outright call the show dog water until I see Zuko, Iroh, or Zaoh in a scene. Those guys loved their roles. Most of the other people are unremarkable to me. Neither good nor bad, just bad direction. Feels like there would be dudes in the room who watched the show then passed it off to idk, Euphoria or Game of thrones writers to punch it up.

There’s just a lot of little details about every character that are omitted and skipped. Characters like azula and bumi were total opposites of each other. The whole switching aang from fleeing due to separating from gyatso and the responsibility of being the avatar to leaving to clear his head, ruins parts of the story. The koh storyline makes no sense and tries to fit the koh, Roku, forest sport and bounty hunter one flowy mess

This show is definitely the most perfect incapsulation of mid. It’s fine, I can sit through it, it’s not technically incompetent but it just does not have any of the magic.

They were more focused on spectacles than the story and characters

I love avatar the last airbender. So much i got a white lotus Tattoo. What i enjoyed about avatar isnt present in just about everything after the original show and im not exited for any of what is slated to come out regarding avatar. Personally i believe it should have been one of those franchises left alone. Let it sit as a masterpiece.

This is going to sound juvenile but a lot of characters in the live action were just fucking *mean*. Bumi, Kuruk, and Kyoshi all bagging on Aang for something completely out of his control. Way to give this 12-year-old kid more survivor’s guilt than he already has. And Hakoda not being proud of Sokka to the point where he was crying by himself? Good lord, I hated watching these kind characters become so sour.

Hard disagree to everything. Not that you're wrong, just that I don't see the problem here. Netflix knew what they wanted, saw the big picture, and went for it. I think this show is a masterpiece. I love the original, but this version is absolutely spectacular. They trim some fat that, to be honest, only works in an animated format, and then they go for broke with some really meaningful and heart wrenching scenes. Something you said about what others have said was the costumes never getting dirty. That seems like such a dumb and arbitrary issue. We're going from an animated show where costumes NEVER got dirty or fucked up to a live action where the same thing exists. Get over it. I am not watching this show to gradually see someone's shirt get grimy. If that's why YOU are watching you're an imbecile. Another complaint I've seen (which works really well in conjunction with another) is that the dialogue and writing seems wooden. Guess what, friendos? The writing is almost identical to the original show. If you have a problem with dialogue and writing here, what you're basically saying is that the original isn't as good as you like to say it is. Which is is objectively to begin with, but translates well to this remake. This show is utterly amazing. It brought my entire family to full stops multiple times because it's so good. These writers really care about the source material, and frankly, haters can go to hell. This captures the spirit of the cartoon while aging it up a bit to appeal to multiple audiences. 10/10, would (and will) watch again.
