I always viewed kill bill as a domestic dispute viewed through a kung fu/assassin lens. Partners who have a disagreement on how they view their relationship. B did not want to her daughter in the lifestyle Bill and her led. I do agree QT was at an impasse after Jackie Brown. But he’s always made genre films. Kill Bill was never a big shock to me. It felt like a reset after his crime films of the 90’s.

I really enjoy your thoughtful and "non-edgy" take on these, and in your other essays. Your tone is inviting and open, and fosters a spirit of discourse. I really do wish Interstellar hit harder in the third act too, but it is still in my top 10 Sci-Fi of all time. Cheers! or whatever y'all say over there :)

You're absolutely spot on about the nonsense regarding Shelly Duvall. People who are quick to accuse Kubrick of "abuse" can't even provide any accurate evidence with any understanding. They'll point to Vivian Kubrick's making of' documentary and claim he's "bullying" her.. The first clip is where he gets understandably frustrated when she wastes a take. He doesn't even raise his voice. And the second is when in between takes and he gives her some feedback. He says not to jump every time Jack speaks emphatically and where to say a particular line. Apparently that's considered bullying today. And then they point to the fact that she did over a hundred takes in a particular scene and it Just proves that they have no understanding of filmmaking. I mean, that's the Job. Filmmaking is difficult and often uncomfortable. That includes acting. I think it says more about how soft this generation is when they don't understand that. Shelly was not the only actor to go through so many takes and there was always a reason for doing that many. Kubrick would never waste time and resources doing a hundred takes for no reason. It's really overblown for one thing. He rarely did that many takes and the number was often exaggerated by the actors. But when he did do that many, you can bet your life there was a good reason for it, often a difficult technical reason that the actors don't really get because it's not their field, or it's simply because the actor Just doesn't know the lines. Kubrick even explained it in an interview. When an actor has to think about the lines, they can't work on the emotion. You can see the concentration and the take is unusable. The scene they point to was very technically difficult. It was a slow moving Steadicam scene with such a shallow depth of field, that a take would be ruined if the camera was even a cm off, and there were at least two points of view, which could not be shot at the same time. And if I remember correctly, they may not have had Garrett Brown (the inventor of the Steadicam) for that particular scene. The only thing that's true is that Kubrick pushed to get the best performance out of her, as he did with every actor he ever worked with.

If you ever get the chance to see 2001 in the cinema, Jump at it. It's an incredible experience. I've been fortunate enough to see it on the big screen a few times. The most recent was actually in 70mm at the Prince Charles Cinema in London. They screen it regularly in order to keep hold of the print. It's the 'unrestored' version so there are a lot of scratches but for many fans of celluloid, it's part of the experience. But whether in 70mm or digital 4k, it's an unforgettable experience on the big screen. It was made for Cinerama, which was like the IMAX of the day. The main difference is that Cinerama was focused more on wide-screen and required 3 synchronised projectors.

Don't really think moral judgements have any place in art criticism.... a piece of art is good or bad dependent on how well it produces the emotions it was intended to produce... how well it depicts what it was intended to predict... I am against exploitation... but to say a piece of art is bad because it is exploitative is to miss the point of art criticism... art criticism is not and should not be about judgement of intention or purpose of the piece but a judgement about how well a piece of art fulfills its intention... creates an impact.. is felt... leave ethics to ethics (see we even have a separate word for it... that isn't art criticism)

I shall mention the worst thing in each one. Also, this review does not recognize any special edition changes and alterations. 11. The Last Jedi - worst film of all time! The worst thing here is Luke dies from distracting Kylo Ren witha hologram manifested. I guess. That's how I always envisioned the greatest hero in the sci-fi fantasy genre going out. 10. The Rise of Skywalker - Han Solo's ghost. He just looks like a person, no ethereal glow like the dead Jedi. Han's ghost aged quite a bit passed his initial corpse. 9. The Force Awakens - Han's dead, the heroes land to meet Lea who arrived. Lea and Chewbacca who are 2 and 1 on Han's closest persons list. They walk past each other like total strangers as Lea goes to hug Rae instead... Rae who is to Lea a perfect stranger and vice versa. 8. Rogue One - Darth Vaders helmet has dark red tint. Can we please castrate the person responsible? 7. Han Solo - Lesson taught by Woddy Harrelson. Woody teaches Han to always be ready to shoot first. Let's analyze it instead of splice the original scene in and be done with it. 6. Revenge of the Sith - "NOOOOOOO!!!" 5. The Phantom Menace - Exposition. Sir,you mentioned midichloreans. I was wondering, could you tell me and the audience what is a midi chlorian? 4. Attack of the Clones - "I failed you my Queen. I'm secret service, an assassination attempt was made, I thwarted it at the cost of my life. I'll get a dunce mark for sure." 3. Return of the Jedi - Chewbacca doing Tarzan. 2. The Empire Strikes Back - the shot where Luke kills the monster who entrapped him in his lair on Hoth. That's literally it. 1. Star Wars - Nothing wrong with the original. Perfect.

Revenge of the Sith is arguably the GREATEST Star Wars of them all, even better than Empire Strikes Back. And The Force Awakens was really good until The Last Jedi DESTROYED the entire saga. Made me love the PT even more.

I think, one thing you are missing about Dr. Strangelove, is that it was made a couple of years after the Cuban Missile Crisis. Think about that! The world just almost ended and Kubrick makes a comedy about Nuclear War a couple of years later. It would be like someone making a (brilliant, classic) dark comedy about 911 in 2003. Imagine the balls that would take and what the public and media response would be!

Honestly as long as someone rates The rise of skywalker at the bottom instead of The last jedi (which is deservingly suppposed to be somehwere in the middle, it's a little higher for me but that's another topic) is a valid list. Also I think return of the jedi is incredibly overrated. The movie spends 40 minutes brining back Han Solo only for him to do absolutely nothing at all for the rest. Nothing of any consequence happens on Endor, it's all just very forgettable. There was no point to the speeder chase except only for the characters to split up and then meet up again nearly half an hour later. It really felt like the movie is just desperately trying to pad out the run-time just so the movie can finally get to the interesting part which is the throne room. 15 interesting minutes in a movie that's nearly 2 and half hours long isn't that great of a ratio for a movie that supposedly "the good one". Even the space battle isn't as good as I remembered, the vfx look worse than the previous 2 films and unfinished. Honestly I thought it's the best one of the original trilogy, before I rewatched it recently, now I think it's even worse than revenge of the sith and yes, even the last jedi. Rouge one is a soulles cashgrab though, it's a generic action spy thriller with corporate fan-service sprinkled in every 5 minutes. It feels like fan-film in a very very bad way. The andor show is good though

Where do you people come from. STOP drinking the water. It's poisoned with stupidity. How can I tell if the list is valid. Is the Las Jedi at the very bottom? Yes means it's a sane enough list. No, we kind of thought the worst was.... That's fucking madness. Rise of Skywalker at least brought the Emperor back which was a hail mary that didn't work, but i guessed they might try simply because after the last jedi, redemption was no longer a possibility.

Have to comment on FMJ. 1st. half 2nd. half, part one part two... Beginning and End, Just a Complete Movie. The lulls are for you to catch your breath from such a visual experience. I saw A Clock work Orange when it was Rated X apon USA release. At my young age being a child of poverty and having visuals many never experience or see. The movie was mesmerizing, again another Complete Movie. Back to FMJ, "I REMEMBER" Arriving in my USN Dress White's Tropical at Oakland International Airport just a little into the afternoon. Carrying my cotton Seabag, looking sharp as a tack. All these people were chanting n stuff, I went closer to heare and see what was going on. They were looking at me with rage and began spitting on me... I was in disbelief, confused and dumbfounded. A US Marine came up and I'd done nothing and they were protesters of the war. (Vietnam War) So they are pretty Complete Movies 🎥 🤓⚒
