There are definitely environmental factors that can cause some slight damage, typically not as damaging as chemical hair services. Hair feeling rough could be a variety of factors, including a new shampoo/conditioner, sleeping on your hair when it’s wet (over time can make it rough). If you are also loosing hair that could indicate a change in your scalp. Have you asked a doctor?

This is a leave in conditioner, I would use it on damp hair after normal shampooing and conditioning, if you don’t shampoo every day you could also apply a little to your ends when your hair is dry
