Avengers: Age of Ultron is not the best Marvel movie. A lot of fans don't care for it at all because it's clunky, long, and messy. But this is why I love it. In the video we break down this perfect little gem of a movie, and why it's imperfections are actually what make it beautiful.

I like to think the one scene close to the end where Ultron and Vision have their talk about humanity being doomed and whatnot... in that scene at the end all we see is them about to clash and them overwhelming light from the mind stone in Vision. Maybe Vision didn't fully destroy Ultron. Idk know how he could've saved him with the powers of the stone, but maybe he did. Maybe he somehow locked him away. The conversation they had doesn't give me a "alright time to destroy this robot for good" feel. In fact the opposite. Jus my theory. Probably a bad one too

@@MaxIronsThird Exactly my problem with it as well. Ultron could have been such a menacing force to be reckoned with. I was expecting Live Free or Die Hard level stuff, where Ultron is using the internet to wage a technological war against the world. With the menace of Terminator meets Lex Luthor meets I, Robot type of villain and story, this movie could have been one of the most interesting and real-world kind of threats in the MCU... but then he forgets the word “children” and I’m just like, what? That doesn’t even make sense for a robot. You’re betraying basic logical stuff and a menacing tone just for not-even-funny moments like that? Very disappointing. At least Spader’s voice still provided a certain level of menace. But the characterization choices for Ultron and the lack of him being enough of an active global threat, despite having access to everything the internet is connected to... was probably the biggest missed opportunity of the whole MCU for me.

“Because Tony hates Tony”. Tony definitely hates himself, but Tony’s relationship with his father is beyond strained, and totally fractured. Tony says “You’re breaking your old mans heart” to Ultron, Tony’s relationship with his father and the gross repressed feelings is the dynamic being portrayed with Tony & Ultron. “You’re my greatest creation” was Howard’s statement to Tony in the film strip, at this point Ultron would be Tony’s “greatest” most insane chaotic creation.

That's like saying The Dark Knight shouldn't have been a Dark Film and Joker shouldn't have been intemdating just to make the Dark Knight Rises and Bane more Dark, Intemdating and a better movie. You could've made The Movie Darker and Made Ultron intemdating in order to make it a superior sequel to the original and Have a much greater impact going into Civil War. Like Ultron causing a mass genocide in sokovia as an example. But it still won't top Infinity War because Infinity War does things on a more Universal Scale than Planetary like in Age Of Ultron. So it would always be better, plus, Infinity War is more of a Villain Movie than a Dark Movie. So if you make AOU Dark it would make it a special Avengers Movie instead of a Avengers 1 Rehash.

I am glad this movie is getting more credit. I recently watched through the whole MCU (again), and was surprised how much I enjoyed AoU. I realised that it was because it is a movie that does a lot of the character and story building for the MCU AS A WHOLE. It is not as self contained as the other entries. The first time I saw it in the cinema, there was no future movies to riff off, so it fell a little flat for me. Not so once I had the reference of the other movies to think on. This movie utilises a heap of future calls and is actually integral to the MCU storyline as a whole. Think about how many memes have come from scenes in this movie alone! Anyhow, TLDR, AoU is a brick in the foundation of the MCU, made better by the sum of its universe. Great vid btw :)

All my friends think this is the weakest of the Avengers films, and even that it's just bad. I love it. Ultron was acted so well, we get 3 new Avenger characters in Pietro, Wanda, and Vision. Falcon and War-Machine get screen time in an Avengers film unlike last time, the Infinity Stones are brought to awareness via Thor. Those visions are used to continue to develop each of the characters for films to come, and yes, just like in the comics, sometimes you just want more of your character as they are, you don't need an introductory arc, or some climactic change of character, we just need to see them in action.

Love, love, love. I could not agree more! Age of Ultron is so underrated, but this movie is the path, the bridge to much deeper characters and stories. It built up for the grand story that was the end of the Infinity Saga and the final chapter for our beloved OG Avengers.

I never realized Age of Ultron wasn't considered good. I always thought it was a typical comic book story, with crazy stuff happening that the heroes really see as crazy and then eventually solving the problems. Even most comic books, which are about 25-30 pages long, are solved by event in the final 3 pages... Often out of the blue, buy new information introduced in the last few frames.

I love James Spader and was looking forward to this movie. But it was a “dark” movie and lacked the warmth other MCU prior movies. You’re correct, the movie was stop and go and emotionally that’s hard to take. Quicksilver shouldn’t have been killed, the stakes were to low. The same is true for Ultron. Ultron’s character needed to be developed at an emotional level.

I see Wanda having a bigger role in this than you say. I believe it’s because of her spell on the Avengers that Tony makes Ultron. It seems like the Stark goes into some kind of dark place for this movie, he is like a tool for her. When Ultron later meets Wanda it seems there is a connection already, so I’ve always felt she was more influential in the plot.

Age of Ultron is still one of my favorite MCU movies despite its flaws. I honestly prefer it over The Avengers. As much as some fans dislike this version of Ultron, I personally loved James Spader's version. The only misgiving I really had about the movie was killing Pietro off just because of the Fox/Marvel rivalry. I really hope they bring back Quicksilver one day.

I feel like this video put into words all the reasons why i love Age of Ulton! I admit, if i have to choose between TV and film, TV will win every time. This is because with TV, we see more character development and have the time to see the emotional beats between characters. Age of Ultron gave me that, It showed the characters battling with their internal struggles as well as delved deeper into who they are without the Avenger title.

It’s interesting how well and terribly this movie does Chekhov’s gun. On one hand you have the avengers early on in the film setting up that no one else but Thor is worthy to lift the hammer then later in the film they pay it off by proving that vison is also worthy. But on the other hand they put in two scenes of Quicksilver being way faster than bullets then later killing him off with bullets. In the end I look at this movie like I do X-men apocalypse is a good movie? No, is it as good as it could’ve been? No but it’s a fun movie to watch regardless. Ironically my favorite part about X-men apocalypse is Quicksilver and my least favorite part of Avengers Age of ultron is Quicksilver

@@pickle.786 he’s way faster than the bullets which means he should’ve been able to move Hawkeye and the kid without getting hit. Great POV Ryan... of Monster-theme of Frankenstein in Avengers2! How has the character-development of Wanda and Vision been in their own TV series? Could you do another film study video like this 'of' the characters've changes in MCUTV series? Are the Frankenstein elements 'there' in the storytelling of Wanda Vision? Thank you and keep-up your excellent work...

Ngl, I’ve always enjoyed this movie. While I was always aware of the flaws in it, the insight we got into all the characters helped ground them and made them all relatable with the audience. Ultron is one of my favorite villains in the comics and I was happy to finally see him in a movie. Finally the foreshadowing this movie provided for the later films was great. When it first came out, it wasn’t the best but looking back in retrospect, it’s probably on of the most important movies in the infinity saga.

I don't think Steve desired a family life in Age of Ultron. I think he feared it. His fear of women in general is pretty clear in Captain America 1, and his awkwardness is still there in Winter Soldier. That makes his vision in AoE parallel to that of the others (as a fear), and makes better sense of his throwing himself into his work. It also means that at the end of Endgame, he was facing his final fear.

Joss Whedon definitely has his downfalls as a person but the poetry and metaphors within his works are unparalleled imo. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was my favorite show growing up. I can't even count how many times I've watched each episode and still to this day I learn something new every time when I watch it. I feel as if a lot of people talk negatively of his work because they just don't understand his use of literary techniques. This video did such an amazing job of breaking down Age Of Ultron. I am now a subscriber!! 👏🏻🤩

That conversation between Vision and Ultron at the end alone makes this movies brilliant. My only two problems with this movie is the death of Pietro, who is my favorite character and I still want him back, that version played by ATJ in particular (and I also want Ultron back!), and the part with Natasha where she makes it seem like being infertile is more of a reason for seeing herself as a monster than her past as an assassin. I always hate it when stories make motherhood or fatherhood, or the biological ability to procreate, is equated to their humanity, as if they're any less human if they're unable or unwilling. It's a beef I have with natalist propaganda in general. Great video and I pretty much agree with all your points here. Age of Ultron is indeed a beautiful mess and I love it too.

What delicious insight! I love these videos. When will you do the 'Age of Ultron is the perfect pivot point for the Infinity Saga'? After seeing everything that came after 'Ultron', it's amazing that this beautiful mess of a movie sets up so many themes and characters that are paid off with so much satisfaction in subsequent MCU movies. One of my favorite lines in 'Ultron' -- Hill: Sokovia's had a rough history. It's nowhere special, but it's on the way to everywhere special. How true.

My biggest nitpick with this movie is that the Ulysses Klaue scene is set "off the coast of Africa." Africa's coastline is ~19k miles and touches 38 countries. The fighting spills over into the nearby city of Johannesburg, even though Johannesburg is over 300 miles from the coast.
