Modern body armor and the proliferation of IEDs in modern warfare has made it more likely that a soldier may lose a limb rather than their life, so there's certainly a market now for affordable prosthesis that are also as functional as the lost limb. Also, just wanted to point out that the Egyptians believed you could not enter the afterlife without a whole body, hence why if the mummy was missing a limb, they were fitted with a prosthesis.

Being an amputee post-birth must be far worse than being born without a limb. I was born with half of my upper arm amputated; but that's me, who I've been my entire life. But people who lost their limbs in war or in accidents had that their entire life. I was born whole, in my mind. But these people have lost one or two or even three of the most precious gifts given to them by birth. Even I wish I could lock my hands together, even I wish that I could feel and touch with another hand. But to lose that, having it their entire lives, being apart of their whole selves, is unimaginable, even for me.

the way to control a prosthetic with your brain might be due to a special glove that detects the movements of your current limb and copies it to the prosthetic in real time. or with a implant in the brain that connects to the limb as if you never lost that limb in the first place.

Great video. I am a Prosthetist and I appreciate you doing this topic. One thing... it is a prosthesis. You may have a prosthetic limbs, but the noun is actually prosthesis. The term 'prosthetic' being used as a noun instead of an adjective is common and drives me crazy. Thank you for the video about prosthetic devices.

"Götz von Berlichingen" also known as "Götz of the iron hand", a german knight is a good example of how good a prophetic could be even in the middle ages. He had 2 hands made by a village blacksmith, the first one (1510) beeing more simple in design to just lock the grip around objects. The second one though was very ahead of it's time, with each joint beeing able to move independently and lock in position, granting him the abillity to hold a sword, hold the reins of a horse and most impressively even write. Dude was an absolute madlad, lost his hand due to a cannonball, got inspired to carry on after seeing one of his soldiers continuing to fight despite having lost a limb. He received a holy bann (meaning anybody could do anything to him) twice, kind of invented the saying "kiss my ass" and took part in over 15 feuds as a mercenary. He even commanded a unit of peasants during the german peasants revolt and later claimed in front of a court that he was only trying to minimise the damage done by them.... which the court believed. And despite he died peacefully at the age of 81 in his castle. The hand can still be seen in a museum

It is cool to think that technology allows us to simulate movement through a prosthetic hand just by using your brain like you would move your normal hand.

Man. Im a double partial foot amputee (double chopart) and I gotta say that I was dismayed seeing that my particular prosthetic has gotten only a single bump in development between the 1700s and 2015 (mad max style brace to AFO style braces). Unfortunately, 98% of people that lose the fronts of their feet are really unhealthy diabetics with poor prognosises, so there is not much incentive to develop something new. It would have been preferable to have continued burning to death.

While artificial limbs are not nearly as good as a natural one someday we might advance to the point where artificial limbs might become superior to natural ones. Think about it, a hand with additional functional fingers or an eye that can improve low light vision and zoom in to make faraway objects clearer.

the problem with the early prosthetics is that you weren't able to kick with a false leg if you lost your leg above the knee, or throw a punch with a fake arm for a above the elbow amputation. they just hang there like as if they were paralyzed, the thought of controlling robotic limb is awesome I always imagine someone controlling a robotic arm to flip someone off.

While i see that specificaly working on improving the life of people who lack such limbs brings in certain things, i think if we focus on making better limbs as a whole. Ones wich are superior to that of the original ones, and use a base version of that as what people with less limbs get ... essentialy more easily comercializing that entire system for everyone alot more progess could potentialy be made. Now like i said ... that is what potentialy could happen so dont come and say somethings on the line of "Supid, thats not how things work" because i know that they dont. Not in a world with Humans.
