Im a 20+ year pilot, just getting back to the cockpit after an 11 year hiatus due to medical. Its not like starting completely over but close. I find your videos help me feel comfortable in the cockpit when dealing with ATC and talking on the radios. Helps with the rust as well. Thank you!!

This is just so good. I used to fly a Cessna 172 out of Archerfield Aerodrome South of Brisbane city, Queensland, Australia, in the 1980’s with the Royal Queensland Aero Club (RQAC). Not as much technology and instrumentation back then, more flying by the seat of your pants! Great to watch this video and check out the amazing technological advances in micro-computing assistive devices now. Very capable pilot is always the crucial factor, however, and a pleasure to watch this one here go through his paces. The 172 was always my favourite aircraft back in the 80’s! +MrAviation101 I wanted give you a tip for you since you're working on your CFI, or CFII. On a procedure turn it is not written in the regs to time that portion. Just as long as the procedure remains within the protected area of the approach, ex: 10 nm. I made that mistake on my CFII ride, and was corrected. Love the videos, safe flying!

I REALLY envy you... 8^) I got my ticket back in the mid-1980's and I REALLY miss flying (I can't pass the medical now) I used to fly a piper PA-46 most of the time. I used to fly for business (I was a Project Consultant in the Communications Industry at the time) (now I spend most of my time composing and conducting orchestral and choral music). The most fun was taking my girlfriend out to dinner to Montreal or Washington, DC, flying her there. Although a close second was ferrying aircraft with my instructor. I got to fly all sorts of aircraft from brand new 172's from the factory all the way up to an MU-2 transatlantic. Boy, what I would give to be young again... 8^)...

I would offer food for thought. At video time marker 18:55 you cancelled IFR on the approach. I would suggest always continue to landing with the IFR clearance. If something unexpected happens and you need to reenter IFR or even if you need some emergency help and cannot contact tower, no longer having a clearance will only add complexity and delay to the situation and go-around. Also there is value in practicing closing out a flight plan when on the ground. Flying a real approach to minimums , landing at a major and busy airport, and then forgetting to close out a flight plan because of the habit of doing it in the air is embarrassing at best.

I had an interesting thought: If you were to attach one of the cameras to the aircraft with a gimbal mechanism and initialize the gimbal on the ground, we would better be able to get a sense of the aircraft's attitude from that view. Could be a cool effect.

Great job. I did notice that you skipped the intermediate altitude of 3600 after intercepting the localizer outbound. That makes for a quite speedy descent of 1100 feet from 4200 to 3100, instead of a nice, easy descent of 500 feet. The devil is in the details! Great job overall, though!

We(ZME/Memphis Center) can't vector MrAviation for an ILS approach because the localizer is not depicted on our radar scopes, unlike HOT Springs, therefore there is nothing to vector to.

I second that. I am just about half-way through my private right now but will immediately start my instrument training after. I am struggling a little with my shorthand right now but am just dreading when the IFR clearances come.

an instructor should explain the acronym to you by which you get all IFR clearances. After that, it's all a matter of whatever gets it down on the page AND you understand it later.

The acronym is CRAFT: Cleared to: an airport or to a waypoint (clearance limit - i.e., expect further clearance prior to arrival or hold), Route: route of flight may be simple like Direct to, or by Victor airways, to VOR's (radio beacons), to waypoints, or a combination; Altitude: an assigned altitude, or to start initial climb, then on course altitude, usually to allow traffic to go along their assigned course, or arrival or departure procedures from airports; Frequency: your initial frequency to contact Departure after leaving the control of the tower, then transferred to Enroute ATC facilities, then maybe an Arrival ATC or TRACON (terminal radar control usually in larger arrival areas like Dallas, Seattle, NYC, etc.), Transponder: code 4 numbers, gives altitude and position ID to ATC. The shorthand can be found in the AIM - download free from FAA.gov.

As soon as he cancelled IFR he was operating under VFR rules. Most people don't go missed when operating under VFR they just go around in the pattern lol

If on an IFR flight plan you do not need explicit clearance to enter a Bravo. So yes, direct is a straight line.

Not a requirement, but the before takeoff checklist in a Cessna 172 is very simple and that's his plane - he's done that checklist literally hundreds of times.

A pilot can have both an IFR and VFR combined flight plan. You list that in your filed flight plan. Start either one and then transfer over to the other when needed for weather or simply to have ATC take you into busy airspace. You can cancel IFR anytime you can fly to your destination under VFR conditions (cloud clearances and visibility requirements) and descend and land safely in a routine manner. You would not normally do this into an airport that had a large volume of controlled traffic. In Class B airspace, you must be cleared to enter, and then you are in contact w/ ATC at all times. You can fly under the shelf of Class B, or C airspace a without contacting them in VFR conditions. These are in explained in the AIM; download free from FAA.gov.

+Brandon D so the bard that you see indicates a 30 degree left turn. You turn to that heading and fly outbound for 1 minute (generally) then you execute a right hand turn of 180 degrees to intercept the final approach course. Make sense?
