Black caiman “not having natural predators” is kinda something that rest in a technicality. They most definitely do when they are in juvenile and adolescent stages of life, but as adults it’s a entirely different story. They are the second largest apex predator in South America behind the Orinoco crocodile and they can reach a size of 13-14 ft with individuals reaching 16 ft which makes them comparable to even large American alligators at 15-17 ft with individuals reaching up to 19 and potentially even 20 ft Do note however black caiman are a more lean predator than American alligators they are faster and more aggressive, but weight in at substantially less than a American Alligator of a comparable size. The Orinoco croc blows both out of the water at a average of 16-22 ft and much heavier bodied at larger sizes than both of the others. Getting back on track the large size and weight class of black caiman puts them comfortably in the seat of apex In fact the only thing that really runs a chance at killing them at full size is either a Jaguar or a very large green anaconda. And if I’m honest as much as a love Jaguars the only way the Jaguar makes it out of a fight with a large black caiman is if the caiman doesn’t manage to get a bite on the Jaguar which honestly isn’t likely given most Jaguars dive into the water when attempting to prey on a caiman and rely on their strength to wrestle the animal into a position where they can bite the caimans neck. A large green anaconda is more likely to be able to tangle with a adult black caiman, but same rules do apply, if the caiman bites the snake anywhere near substantial it’s likely to be fatal. And even if the anaconda manages to grapple and constrict the caiman to death it likely won’t even attempt to eat a food item that large.

What makes the Arapaima dangerous isn’t how it eats. It’s the fact that it’s bony skull makes it a living torpedo. Jeremy Wade got hit square in the chest by one of those things trying to escape a fishing net and it messed up his heart. Imagine if that thing hit you somewhere less protected.

@jajane2544 2 жыл бұрын
Granted, clearly the writer or narrator have not done their homework on this video, I would suggest you watch the episodes of "River Monsters" with Jeremy Wade that feature a couple of the fish on this list. The reason the Arapaima is listed as "deadly" (but is certainly dangerous) is not it's mouth and/or bite. The Arapaima is an overly aggressive fish when it is nesting or when it's frightened and defending itself. It has a very bony head and will ram or headbutt people intentionally. Large Arapaima can easily knock someone out or cause sever damage to the chest of human. The story behind the Pacu isn't actually based in the Amazon. It's based, I believe, in New Guinea. They were released as a new food source and quickly became a devastatingly invasive species. They first ate up all the vegetation. It is rumored that when the vegetation was gone they turned to eating the native species of fish in the rivers. Lastly there is some proof (which cannot be absolutely confirmed) that people have been bitten by these fish, due to there being no other food source. Those bites were not actually on the testicles. That is more a rumor that is based on the fact that in their native rivers, Pacu will eat TREE NUTS as a primary food source, and they have to have a very strong bite force to do so. The humans that were bit the fish miss took them as something else at the time. AKA, starving fish, willing to eat almost anything, mistakes human in murky water as food, bites and has a crushing bite force.

I’d be less concerned about most apex predators. They’re not stupid and won’t bother with you if you’re not worth the trouble. Otters, chimps, hippos and other non apex predators will have no issue putting you in your place if provoked. Just because it eats plants, it doesn’t mean it’s not as big of a threat as an apex predator. Cougars and wolves want nothing to do with humans. Can they hurt humans? Yes but for the most part they’d rather leave you alone. Chimps don’t need a reason to be aggressive. That’s just their personality😹

Actually I'm a doctor in Brazil, I've had the opportunity to work in some riverside villages to provide basic family medicine care a couple years back and one common cause of medical emergency due to animal attack was that small fish in the end, here it's called candiru. It's pretty nasty, the spikes lodge themselves deep and cause a lot of internal bleeding. The reason is because they track their true prey, the bagre (catfish), via amonia in the water coming from their gills, and they think when a human urinates or has a dirty urethra inside water is a catfish because of that amonia signal, it signals to the candiru that it is a catfish, and it goes in. Swimmers are often told here to not pee inside the river specially because of this.

The giant otter is actually REALLY dangerous and territorial, they'll literally fight a crocodile until it's too tired to keep up and kill it as a group, most otters aren't like this but the giant otter is. Edit: for the people who are saying that they actually kill caiman, I actually think you might be right (although I still think there might be a few incidents where they killed actual crocodiles if they encountered each other since the way they kill when their prey is way bigger than them is by tiring the prey until it's unable to fight back) but they also kill jaguars and if something can kill a jaguar you can bet that they'll absolutely destroy you and yes they are dangerous to humans (again, they're very territorial and they're not afraid of literally anything so there's no reason to think they won't go after you if you think about getting close to their territory) If you want to see more about them I think there's an animalogic video on them so you can check it out

I like your channel and look forward to seeing more! You could also react to Tanked or to videos of people attending fish shows/going to fish stores/showing their fish collections as all of those have their following on YT but the latter especially is definitely its own wormhole. Searching "Vice fish" yields some results and the Vice videos get millions of views. Maybe you could review fish monsters/designs from popular rpg games. Hey zak at 2:36 the guy mean't giant otters and not normal sea otters, giant otters can literally kill caiman, jaguars, and humans, attacks are pretty common but deaths are rare. Edit: i see alot comments saying they haven't killed humans, they have killed humans but they are rare, ppl usually die bcuz of the infection from the bite, but they are dangerous and they can kill a jaguar, also just cuz they haven't killed many ppl doesn't mean they aren't deadly, it's a different story for sharks, shark attacks are usually and most likely an accident.

@@dbt4869 No, it's from River Monsters and he was interviewing the victim and doctor who performed the operation to remove the fish explaining what happened. Hell they showed actual footage from the endoscope during the operation and images of the extracted fish, like did you even watch the video?

I'm talking as a brazilian from Manaus(the capital of the Amazon state) that grew up swimming in the amazon river and the black river, and I totally agree with you that this dude is spreading misinformation about most of the fishes in the list, specially the Pacu and the Arapaima(who is most commonly called PIRARUCU), there are even some places where you can go to feed them and swim by their side. You've just earned a new subscriber directly from the source of where those animals come from. Greetings from Brazil!
